021 Want a Shock?

Following Ye Ka's recommendation, Tan Mo arrived at a small restaurant near the school. It looked small, the decor was a bit old-fashioned, but it appeared very clean. The proprietress was a woman in her forties with some wrinkles on her face. Smiling warmly, she invited the two of them inside. They ordered three dishes and sat down at their seats to wait. It was 11:30, and since it wasn't the start of the term, there weren't many people yet. After sitting down, Ye Ka leaned in mysteriously. "Boss, you've just arrived at Cheng Ye and don't know the rules yet. Let me explain them to you." "Rules? School rules?" "School regulations are one thing, but the unwritten rules among students are another," Ye Ka explained. "The entire senior year at Cheng Ye is encouraged to live on campus. All students are assigned dorm rooms, but your roommates aren't necessarily from your own class." "So it's mixed housing with other classes? That's not too strange." "Just don't room with anyone from Class Thirteen. That bunch is basically left to their own devices by the teachers—no one can control them." "Sounds pretty great actually." No studying required—basically heaven for a slacker like her. She remembered that students who passed the entrance exam could choose their own classes. A class with that kind of free-spirited atmosphere might be perfect. "That crew has no teacher oversight and basically operate as their own clique. You need to watch out for them, especially their leader Zhuo Ruolian. Don't provoke him if you can help it." Ye Ka warned her sincerely. He'd been at Cheng Ye for two years. Though he wasn't in their class, he'd heard plenty of rumors about Class Thirteen. Especially about Zhuo Ruolian—he'd heard the most stories about him. He'd entered as a freshman with near-perfect scores, was placed in Class One, and then, due to conflicts with classmates, requested a transfer to Class Thirteen. Initially, everyone in that class resented this newcomer, but by the second semester of sophomore year, he'd become the undisputed leader of the entire class. "I'm not entirely sure what his family does, but seriously, just don't provoke him if you can avoid it," Ye Ka cautioned. "That scary?" Tan Mo started mentally picturing a fierce, muscle-bound brute with a fearsome scowl. Yeah, that kind would definitely be best to avoid. Ye Ka nodded. "Mm-hmm. If you accidentally get on their bad side, their whole clique might come after you. But hey, Boss, since your surname is Tan, probably no one would be foolish enough to mess with you anyway." "Because of my grandfather?" Tan Mo guessed immediately. Back during the k********g, she'd overheard bits of conversation between the kidnappers and whoever was pulling the strings. As soon as the person on the phone found out she was Tan Zhensheng's biological granddaughter, they immediately warned the kidnappers not to harm her. Her grandfather must be pretty influential. "Exactly! Boss, you might not know, but Old Tan is the Honorary President of the Great Xia Art Association. Tianle Media, your family's company, was actually founded with money he earned from his film acting days back in the day." Ye Ka filled her in. "Even though he's handed over control of the company to his daughter-in-law now, his influence from back then still carries weight." Tan Mo followed his lead and searched online, quickly finding the name. Old Master Tan was a renowned director from the last century in his youth, a talented and handsome heartthrob etched in the memories of people from her parents' generation. In an old black-and-white photograph, Old Master Tan sat among a group of movie stars from that era, smiling at the camera. "So handsome!" Tan Mo grinned goofily. Oh no, she was starting to feel a bit of admiration for her grandfather. "He's a legend who directed two classic films of the last century, 'Harmony in Diversity' and 'Red Snow.' My grandmother's absolute favorite," Ye Ka chimed in. Just as they were talking, the dishes arrived at the table. "Boss, you've got to try this. This place's potato pancake is especially good," Ye Ka introduced excitedly. Tan Mo followed his lead and took a piece. Probably because the potatoes themselves were soft and sticky after steaming, a simple stir-fry made them absolutely delicious. Although she couldn't taste much, the texture was excellent. That was Tan Mo's take on it. The rice was also perfectly cooked—dry and fluffy, each grain distinct and satisfying to chew. She was sold on Little Bro Ye's recommendation. But just at that moment, a jarring note intruded. "Pretty little thing, aren't you? What grade are you in?" Tan Mo followed the grating voice and saw a customer waiting for his meal, pulling at the young girl who worked in the shop. The girl looked around her age, wearing an apron—probably the owner's daughter. "Those are some fair hands..." The man leered at the girl's pretty face, a lascivious grin on his face. This shop girl looked young, but her face was nice, and her figure wasn't bad either. Her clothes were a bit plain, which probably meant her family was poor. Someone like her, getting harassed here, probably wouldn't dare tell her family. Perfect. Just perfect! The girl's face turned icy cold at his words. "A girl your age, working here during summer break—you wouldn't want to cause trouble and get yourself fired, would you?" He leered, his movements becoming more brazen. Just as the man was about to let his wandering hand touch the young girl's arm, he felt a sharp pain at the back of his head. A chopstick clattered to the floor with a "pat." "So greasy, so oily. Is this how people flirt these days?" Tan Mo twirled the other chopstick in her hand, then with a flick of her wrist, sent it flying. During review breaks a few days ago, she'd discovered while playing darts that her aim was remarkably accurate. "What did you say, little miss?!" The man, now called out, immediately flared up. He was just trying to chat up a young girl here—how did he run into someone who couldn't mind their own business? "What, is harassing girls something to be proud of?" Tan Mo stood up and walked over. Ye Ka watched as something sparkled in his boss's hand. She patted the man with it, and instantly, the man trembled violently and collapsed to the ground. More magical than anything written in novels. Having taken the man down, Tan Mo pulled out her phone, snapped a photo of his face, and opened an app. The girl standing beside her only saw a loading screen, followed by a profile popping up. This man's name was Zhang Haiping. He was a wanted criminal on the Public Security Administration's list, with a bounty of over ten thousand. Tan Mo showed the screen to the girl and offered a slight smile. "Could you trouble yourself to call the police? And while you're at it, grab me a new pair of chopsticks." The girl looked at her, said nothing, just turned around to get her the chopsticks. Tan Mo returned to her seat. "Boss! Boss! How did you do that?" Ye Ka had completely forgotten about his food, staring at her with starry eyes. "Uh, well... it's just... Great Xia martial arts. All martial arts, one strike to kill." Tan Mo explained vaguely. She couldn't exactly tell Little Bro Ye Ka that she'd used her ability, condensed electrical energy, and just zapped the man unconscious, could she? "And that phone app you used—what was that?" Ye Ka was intensely curious. Tan Mo opened the owl social app and sent him the installation package. "It's a facial recognition software. I searched and found out he was a wanted criminal. Perfect timing to have that shop girl call the cops." With that bounty, that shop clerk's family should be a bit better off too.
