Tan Mo lay in bed, unable to sleep, restless from Yuan Xing's message.
"Is that what you want?"
Did that mean, if she wanted, he could appear before her tomorrow? It wasn't like he was a magician.
She stared at the plain ceiling, harboring a sliver of hope as she drifted into sleep.
The next day.
Tan Mo got up, sat at the dining table, and ate her bacon and eggs.
"Our family chef's cooking—hope you don't mind it, Chong." Xu Piao smiled at Chong Huan.
Chong Huan, who'd been singled out, just maintained his smile. "Not at all, Auntie. It's fine."
Tan Qi stared at the two, a bit jealous.
Even though she was just an adopted daughter, Tan Rou's luck was incredible. She'd easily landed a wealthy. With the Chong family backing her, no one could touch her now.
As for Tan Mo, she'd narrowly escaped a k********g and even met a very handsome ordinary guy...
She was dying of envy over this luck in turning danger into safety.
"Qiqi, did you eat something burnt? Your face looks terrible." Tan Mo smiled cunningly, drawing everyone's attention to Tan Qi.
Seeing her daughter's expression, Xu Piao immediately shot her a glare. Tan Qi could only grit her teeth and focus on her breakfast.
After the meal, Tan Rou placed her senior year notes and books on Tan Mo's desk.
Tan Mo stared blankly at the pile of books in front of her, a bit scared.
Was she supposed to read through all this in just fifteen days?
"First, go through these and see how much you remember. I'll find you some practice tests—we'll do an assessment this afternoon." Tan Rou didn't think the mountain of books was excessive at all. She was already planning. "Chengye's entrance exams are quite tricky. Let me see what you're good at before making a plan. Just aim for a safe, reliable score."
"Um... what's a reliable score?" Tan Mo asked nervously.
"Language, Math, Foreign are 150 each. Comprehensive is 300 total. You need at least 680 to even close the admission cut-off line."
Tan Mo broke out in a sweat, trembling as she opened a notebook.
History.
She recognized every word, but put together, nothing registered.
Switched to another. Politics.
Her head spun even more.
Switched again. Physics.
Unexpectedly, this one made sense. The theorems and formulas felt familiar.
Could she be a science genius?
She went through all the notes and got a general idea.
Language: needed memorization; Math: understood at a glance; Foreign: still readable; Science:reluctantly;Humanities: hopeless...
Conclusion: The future looked bleak. Exams were probably a lost cause.
Just then, Lily's voice brought some clarity to her dizzy mind.
"Miss, someone is here to see you."
This voice was like heavenly music to her ears. Tan Mo dropped her book and ran out, "Sis, I'll read it when I'm back!"
Tan Rou hugged her arms and watched that lively, carefree figure disappear, letting out a sigh.
A hopeless slacker. Worrisome.
As Tan Mo descended the stairs, she caught sight of a figure in the living room.
She had been hoping he would come last night, and here he was, visiting this morning.
"Momo, come here." Old Mr. Tan beckoned her over with a kind and gentle gesture.
Tan Mo obediently sat down on the sofa and glanced at the person sitting on the opposite sofa. Her eyes lit up.
He really came.
"Yuan, it's more than enough that you saved my precious granddaughter, and now you even bring gifts," Tan Zhen Sheng patted his granddaughter's shoulder. "Momo, why don't you thank him?"
Yuan Xing quickly interjected, "Old Mr. Tan, please don't mention thanks. If anything, I should be the one thanking your second young lady."
"Oh?"
"When I was traveling before, someone tried to extort me. Your second lady was brave and resourceful enough to help me out. Thanks to her, I came through unscathed. I never expected we'd be so fated to meet again."
Hearing this, Old Mr. Tan laughed heartily. "So that's how it is! What an extraordinary connection."
But Tan Mo felt something was off. Probably due to her amnesia, she had no recollection of such a heroic deed.
She had a faint suspicion Yuan Xing was lying.
Just as she was about to speak, she saw Tan Yi enter the living room. "Grandfather, we have a guest?"
Seeing Tan Yi's face, Tan Mo's expression darkened again.
Tan Yi, however, didn't seem too bothered. Ever since the car accident, Tan Mo's attitude toward him had been far from friendly anyway. It would take time to mend that relationship; he couldn't fix it overnight.
"Hello," Yuan Xing turned his head, looking at him.
No special glance was needed, just that simple greeting, yet Tan Yi felt a chill run down his spine.
"This is?" he asked, a little puzzled.
This young man's face was unfamiliar; he couldn't quite place where he might have seen him before.
"Just a nobody ." Yuan Xing said with a cold smirk.
Hearing his sarcastic tone, Tan Mo felt a flicker of schadenfreude. With one remark, he could keep Tan Yi awkward for at least ten minutes.
"How could that be?" Tan Yi asked, puzzled. "This young brother has an extraordinary bearing..."
Before he could finish his sentence, realization dawned on him.
Wasn't this young man the motorcyclist who had brought Tan Mo home last night? Dressed so sharply today, he'd almost failed to recognize him.
With Grandfather present, if he made even the slightest misstep, he'd likely get another lecture.
Forcing down his embarrassment, he steeled himself and continued, "Surely a promising youth with a bright future. No need for such self-deprecation."
Watching him struggle to explain himself, Tan Mo couldn't help but applaud internally.
His ability to adapt on the spot was far better than that hot-tempered sister of his.
"Brother Tan Yi, now that you've seen him for yourself, you can rest easy, right?" Tan Mo naturally wasn't about to let him smooth things over so easily.
Hearing this, Old Mr. Tan, who had been affable moments before, now looked at Tan Yi with a somewhat different expression.
Tan Yi's face was a mask of embarrassment. He gritted his back teeth slightly but managed a smile. "Yes, now that I know you're not making strange friends, I can relax. I have a shoot tomorrow, so I need to catch my flight."
With that, he practically fled out the door.
Yuan Xing watched his retreating back, a dark glint in his eyes. Then he turned back to Tan Mo with a smile.
Lucky he ran off so fast, or else...
"I recall the second young lady is preparing for the entrance exams for Cheng Ye School, right? I have a cousin who studies at Hongtu. If you'd like, I could send you some practice papers."
Among the three most prestigious middle schools in the country — Northern Hongtu, Southern Cheng Ye, and the High School Attached to Imperial University — were teeming with top students. Gaining admission to any of them all but guaranteed scoring above the cutoff for the top-tier universities in the future.
Tan Mo's eyes filled with utter despair.
She's an academic slacker; she doesn't want to do practice problems.
"Thank you, but no ."
"There are still two weeks until the Cheng Ye entrance exam. I won't disturb your studies, Second Miss. If you come across any questions you don't understand, feel free to send them my way."
Yuan Xing slid the paper bag containing the aromatherapy towards Tan Mo, stood up, and politely took his leave.
Clutching Yuan Xing's gift, Tan Mo was walking up the stairs when she encountered Tan Qi standing at the top of the landing.
"Who knows what no-name brand that aromatherapy is, and you're treating it like treasure," Tan Qi said, glancing at her with a hint of envy.
