Episode 1:
Thebes is plagued by a terrible plague, and Oedipus, who once saved the city from the Sphinx, is called upon to find a solution. He sends Creon to the oracle at Delphi, who returns with the message that the plague will end when the murderer of Laius is found and punished. Oedipus vows to find the killer and curses the murderer, even if it is someone close to him.
Episode 2:
Oedipus summons the seer Tiresias, who initially refuses to reveal the truth but, after being taunted by Oedipus, reveals that Oedipus is the murderer he seeks. Oedipus, furious and unwilling to believe the truth, accuses Tiresias of conspiring with Creon to overthrow him.
Episode 3:
Creon, who is accused by Oedipus of plotting against him, defends himself and the chorus questions the validity of Tiresias's claims. A messenger arrives from Corinth announcing the death of Oedipus's supposed father, Polybus, and Oedipus's ascension to the throne, which initially brings relief to Oedipus. However, the messenger's revelation that Oedipus was given to him as a baby by a shepherd, and that the shepherd was given the baby by Laius, raises doubts about Oedipus's identity.
Episode 4:
The shepherd who exposed the infant Oedipus arrives and, under pressure, reveals that the baby was Laius's son, and that Jocasta, Oedipus's wife, gave him the baby to be killed because of a prophecy that the child would kill his father. Oedipus, realizing the horrifying truth that he is the murderer of Laius and the son of Jocasta, is overcome with grief and despair.
