Chapter 4 – The Meadow Guardian

Chapter 4 – The Meadow Guardian Kael stumbled backward, clutching the brush like a weapon. The painted meadow glowed softly under the strange stars, but the man in black seemed untouched by its beauty. His shadow stretched unnaturally across the grass, reaching toward Kael like claws. “Give me the brush,” the man said, his voice low and steady. “It is not yours to wield.” Kael raised the brush, trying to paint a barrier of fire between them, but his strokes were shaky. Flames burst to life, but the man stepped through them without harm. Kael’s chest tightened—he couldn’t win. Just as the man reached for him, the ground trembled. From the meadow rose a giant figure made of vines and glowing petals. Its eyes shimmered like lanterns, and its voice rumbled like distant thunder. “This world is not yours, Shadow,” the creature growled, stepping between Kael and the man. “The Painter is under my protection.” Kael stared in shock. He had painted only a door, not a guardian—so who was this? The man in black hissed, retreating a step for the first time. “So the meadow still breathes…” he muttered darkly. “No matter. The boy cannot hide forever.” With a swirl of smoke, he vanished, leaving the air heavy with silence. The vine-creature knelt, lowering its massive face to Kael’s level. “Do not fear,” it said gently. “The brush chose you for a reason. And I will help you discover why.”
