“Mate.” Desmond's eyes opened wide at the revelation from his wolf, Des. “Mate.” He was deeply confused as he watched Odessa dance along the street, tasting different dishes of exotic street foods. He looked at her with new eyes, her hair dancing gently in the wind. It was as if everything was in slow motion. As Odessa turned towards him, her smile captivating. “Why are you looking at me that way, Des?” She laughed, her voice teasing, while walking towards him. The sound of the nickname she called him sent shivers down his spine as a sudden cold enveloped him. “Answer me, Desmond, you're acting weird.” The blue of her eyes stared deep into his soul. It all felt surreal. He had never felt such a feeling before in his entire life. “Mate,” he whispered, his voice filled with wonder and excitement. “You're my mate, Odessa.” Odessa looked at him, her blue eyes sparkling with curiosity and confusion. “Are you okay, Desmond? What's going on?” Her confusion was palpable. Desmond's face was filled with wonder and a hint of fear. Wonder that he had finally found his mate after years of endless searching. And fear of why she became his mate, since she already had a mate whom she rejected. “I can't explain it, but you're my mate, Odie. I can feel the bond. My wolf can feel it too.” Odessa's eyes widened at the new information as her mind tried to process it. “How can this be? Is this possible?” She had heard of second-chance mates, but it rarely ever occurred. And to find out her husband was her mate, it was all so surreal. “I can't explain it, but I know it's true. I can feel the bond, can't you?” Desmond asked, his eyes locked on Odessa's eyes. Odessa didn't want to break his heart. Knowing behind the mask of an angry and domineering Alpha was a sensitive and kind-hearted man. “I can't feel any connection.” She saw his deflated state and tried to alleviate it. “But eventually, I'm very sure I will. You're a kind man.” Her hands went to his face, touching his neat stubble. “I will want no other man except you, Desmond.” Desmond smiled at her words, his heart calming in her presence. “You know, I've been searching for our mate for years, and suddenly I can feel this connection to you. I can feel the bond.” Odessa's mind raced with questions. Her head began pounding. “But what about Lucas? Wasn't he my mate?” Desmond's face hardened at the mention of her ex-mate, Lucas. “Whatever connection you had with Lucas, I want you to forget it. I can feel our bond.” He directed her hand to his heart. “It's much stronger than whatever that will ever be. I want you to feel this connection too, Odie.” Odessa searched Desmond's face, looking for signs of doubt or deceit, but she found none. Only sincerity and admiration filled his eyes. Her heart raced at the thought he had just suggested. His words were heavy with intensity. Impossible. Could it be? Had she found her true mate in him? “I can feel some connection with him, but I don't know if it's a mate bond. Something seems to be blocking it.” Aria stated. “What could be blocking such a connection from me?” As if Desmond could sense her internal conflict and sound, he stretched out his hands around her waist, bringing her body tight against his. “If you don't feel it now, I'll wait for you. Let's have time to figure this out together as husband and wife, okay?” Odessa smiled, grateful for his understanding. His cool attitude suddenly resurfaced. “Or we'll figure it out as future true mates.” He smirked. Odessa laughed at his goofy attitude, punching him on his shoulder. “Idiot.” “At least I'm your idiot.” They both laughed. Enjoying the street food they picked. Desmond couldn't ignore the butterflies that went through his stomach. He was ecstatic. He had finally found his mate, and she was simply gorgeous. Deep down, he knew she could feel it too. The connection between them. The heat blossomed and sparks ignited any time they touched each other. Together, they walked as a couple, overseeing all the foods the pack streets had to offer. Meanwhile, a figure hidden in the shadows stared at the couple as they walked away. Her stare was intent as she glared at one person in particular, Odessa. “That thief,” she whispered to herself, growling. “How dare you enjoy the life that was meant to be mine?” Emma growled, hatred burning in her heart. She had been seeking to destroy and kill Odessa for many times now, but Odessa was able to escape her deadly final blow. She didn't know how Odessa was able to sense her plans of killing her that day, but that didn't matter. She had a bigger plan. “Don't worry, little sister. Enjoy while the day is still bright, for I shall return and destroy your perfect life.” Emma's eyes gleamed with a sinister light as she began to plan her next move. “Jealous little birdie sitting in the shadows while planning on how to kill her sister.” A figure whispered behind Emma's ears, making her jump in fright. Emma turned towards the figure, her claws brought out in defense. “Retract your claws, Emma, if you don't want me to cut them off from you.” He mentioned. As light cast over half of his face. “Lucas.” Emma breathed a sigh of relief, holding her chest. “You almost scared me to death.” A humorous laugh erupted from Lucas. His handsome face coming into the light as he held her chin. “You don't have a heart, and even if you do, it will be stone cold.” Emma narrowed her eyes, not seeing the humor. “Funny. What are you doing here, Lucas? How did you find me?” “What are you wearing?” She looked at his outfit like that of a commoner. She squeezed her face in disgust. “Well, I have to blend in with the crowd, of course. I can't sneak around wearing expensive designer clothes, can I?” He replied, cleaning some dirt off his finger as he sat beside the log of wood Emma sat on. “And I'm doing the same thing you're doing. Watching as my mate walks with another man. But not for long.” Emma squinted her eyes, sensing a hint of jealousy from his tone. They did have the same plan to destroy the two married couples. “Do you have a plan?” Emma asked desperately. Lucas's eyes gleamed with a sinister light as he nodded. “I do have a plan. One that will shatter the existence of Odessa into a million pieces.” He turned towards Emma. “And I will need your help if I am to achieve it.” This statement made Emma squeal with excitement. “What do I have to do?” Her eager voice made Lucas grin wider. “Are you up to the task?” He asked, his brows raised. An evil laugh erupted from deep within Emma. “When have I never been up to any task that could destroy that thief?” Lucas nodded. “First, you have to get close to Odessa, gain her trust, and make her feel you're the only person she can trust.” Emma narrowed her eyes, not convinced he was telling her everything. “What else are you planning to do? What about Desmond?” “Well, little bird.” He planted a kiss on her plump lips. “That's for me to know and you to find out. For now, focus on your mission.” Emma smiled cunningly, her mind reeling and eyes gleaming sinisterly with the thought of revenge as she stared at the disappearing figure of Lucas. “You shall pay with your life, Odessa, and I'll take back what's rightfully mine.” “First, I need to take a position that's higher than yours.”
