Chapter 3

"Lilia, I need to go meet a business partner. Will you be okay on your own?" I nodded, soft and composed as always. "Go ahead. I'm fine." A few minutes after Angus left, I headed out to the courtyard. I'd planned to enjoy a little peace and quiet, but my phone suddenly rang. An unknown number lit up the screen. I hesitated for a split second before answering. The moment the call connected, a woman's breathy, suggestive moans spilled through the speaker. "Right there... Angus... faster..." "You wild kitten, I could die right here with you!" The sharp, wet sounds of their bodies colliding grew louder and more frantic by the second. I tightened my grip on my phone, then tapped the record button. I sat alone in the courtyard, silent and still, and listened to every last second. Surprisingly, I didn't feel a thing. Not even the slightest ache in my chest. The moment I'd discovered Angus was cheating, I'd cut him completely out of my heart. I had no idea how much time had passed before hurried, uneven footsteps came rushing toward me. "Lilia!" Angus came hurrying into view. His suit was badly rumpled, and his hair stuck up in wild tufts. The moment he spotted me sitting in the courtyard, he rushed over. "Lilia, why are you hiding out here? I nearly lost my mind when I came back and couldn't find you." I stood up and, playing the role of the perfect, devoted wife, gently smoothed his rumpled collar and straightened his crooked tie. "It was a little stuffy inside. I just came out for some fresh air." Angus practically preened under my careful attention. "That bastard refused to budge on the project terms and dragged the meeting out forever. I'm sorry you had to sit around waiting." I smiled warmly. "It's fine. Family business comes first." Angus pulled me into his arms, his voice thick with emotion. "The universe must have had a special place for me, or I never would have found you." I pressed a hand against his chest, keeping him from getting any closer. The sickly, cloying scent of his recent tryst with his mistress still clung to his clothes. It was foul. Repulsive. I tilted my head up to look at him and asked as casually as I could, "Angus, how long are you going to stay loyal to me?" His eyes flickered for the briefest moment. "I swear on my life. I'll be loyal to you, Lilia, right up until the day they lower me into my grave!" Once upon a time, hearing those words would have made me melt into his arms, giddy with happiness. Now, I simply stepped back, putting a clear, icy distance between us. My voice was slow and deliberate, every word carrying a deeper meaning. "People who break their vows get punished, you know." Angus answered without the slightest hesitation, "If I ever break that vow, let me spend every day for the rest of my life in agony, right up until the moment I die." ***** There were 2 days left until my "disappearance." If the people in the Republic of Bellavere still needed more time to get everything ready, I wouldn't have been able to endure even these final 2 days. My oh-so-dear fiancé had the nerve to bring his mistress right in front of me without the slightest hint of shame. At first, I thought he'd finally grown a spine and decided to lay all his cards on the table. Perfect. I could cut ties with him right then and there. But Angus merely beamed at me as if nothing was wrong and made the introduction. "Lilia, this is Fiona, my assistant Bob's younger sister. She's sharp as a tack and just joined the family team. We've got way too much going on around here lately, and those idiots can't seem to get anything right." I stared at the woman standing before me. My lips still held that perfect, polished smile, but my eyes were cold as ice. Angus, do you really think I'm that stupid? I'd handled the family's business affairs for years. Did he really think I wouldn't know whether Bob had a sister? I extended my hand, greeting her with what looked like perfect sincerity. "Welcome to the Moretti Family, Fiona." She took my hand and smiled politely. "It's an honor, Miss White." Ever since Angus and I got engaged, the entire family had taken it for granted that I'd become the future Mrs. Moretti. Everyone already called me "Mrs. Moretti" without a second thought. Since Fiona was working for the family, there was no way in hell she didn't know that.
