Severed Bloodlines

1607 Words
Arya POV The dungeon beneath the Sterling Cross headquarters is a place reserved for rogues and traitors. It smells like damp earth, rust, and the faint, stinging metallic scent of silver. I am curled into a tight ball on the freezing concrete floor, my knees pulled up to my chest. My cheek still throbs with a dull, burning ache where Sienna slapped me, but that pain is absolutely nothing compared to the agony in my chest. Rejecting a fated mate is supposed to be the most painful thing a wolf can do. Even without my wolf, my human body is suffering the consequences of the severed bond. Every breath I take feels like I am inhaling broken glass. My heart stutters and aches, crying out for the boy who threw me away. He isn't the boy you loved, I remind myself, pressing the heels of my hands into my eyes to stop the tears. That boy is dead. The man upstairs is a monster. I don't know how many hours pass in the dark. It feels like an eternity of shivering and silent crying. Finally, the heavy metal door at the top of the concrete stairs groans open. A sliver of harsh yellow light cuts through the darkness. Heavy footsteps descend the stairs. For a single, pathetic second, my heart skips a beat. A tiny, stupid part of me hopes it's Liam. I hope his wolf took control, that he realized his massive mistake, and he is rushing down here to apologize and pull me out of this hell. But as the figure steps in front of the iron bars of my cell, my stomach drops. It isn't Liam. It is my father. Beta Marcus looks immaculate. He is still wearing his expensive charcoal suit from the gala, not a single hair out of place. He looks down at me through the bars, his expression completely unreadable. He doesn't look like a father seeing his daughter locked in a cage. He looks like a CEO inspecting a broken piece of machinery. "Get up, Arya," he says, his voice flat and authoritative. I slowly push myself off the freezing concrete, my muscles screaming in protest. I wrap my arms around my waist, refusing to cower, even though I am shivering violently. "Did you enjoy the gala, Dad?" I ask, my voice hoarse and bitter. "Did you enjoy watching the new Alpha humiliate me in front of the entire board?" Marcus sighs, pinching the bridge of his nose like I am just giving him a massive headache. "Liam told me what happened in the kitchen. He told me you rejected him." "He backed me into a corner," I snap, stepping closer to the bars. "He lied on that stage! He felt the bond, Dad. I am his fated mate, and he chose Sienna instead. He told me he was going to hide me in an apartment downtown to be his secret mistress while my abuser gets to parade around as the Luna!" Marcus looks me dead in the eye, his face completely blank. "I know." The two words hit me like a physical punch to the gut. The air rushes out of my lungs. I stare at the man who raised me, completely horrified. "You... you knew?" I whisper. "Liam came to me a week ago," Marcus says calmly, crossing his arms over his chest. "He told me that he suspected you were his mate. He also knew that the board of directors would never, ever allow a wolfless Omega to hold shares in this empire, let alone bear the title of Luna. The Sterling Cross stock would plummet. The allied packs would see us as weak. It would be a public relations disaster." Bile rises hot and fast in my throat. "So you planned this? You and Liam planned to throw me away?" "We planned a compromise," Marcus corrects me, his tone hardening. "Sienna is pure-blooded. She has the connections, the poise, and the strength to stand by his side in the boardroom. She secures the pack's future. But you are his fated mate. A true Alpha cannot survive long without the grounding presence of his destined mate. His wolf will go feral." Marcus steps right up to the iron bars, looking down at me with cold, calculating eyes. "This is the reality of our world, Arya. This is business," he says. "Liam is currently tearing his penthouse apart. His wolf is struggling with your rejection. So, here is what is going to happen. You are going to take back your rejection. You will allow Liam to formally mark you in secret. That mark will soothe his wolf and keep him sane. In exchange, you will be moved out of the basement. You will live comfortably in the shadows, and you will do exactly what Sienna tells you to do in the daylight." I stare at him. I literally cannot comprehend the words coming out of his mouth. "You want me to let him forcefully mark me," I say, my voice trembling with absolute disgust. "You want me to be a blood-bag for his wolf, and a servant for my sister. And you are my father. You are supposed to protect me." "I am protecting this pack!" Marcus barks, losing his cool for the first time. "You are defective, Arya! You failed to shift. You offer absolutely nothing to this family. This arrangement is the only way you will ever have a shred of value to the Sterling Cross. It is your duty to accept it." "My duty?" I laugh, a harsh, broken sound that echoes off the damp stone walls. "My duty is to be a secret wh*re for the man who broke my heart? Just so you can get a promotion?" "Watch your mouth!" Marcus roars. The Alpha command bleeds into his Beta aura, trying to force me to my knees. My body shakes. My human instincts scream at me to drop, to submit to his power. But the anger inside of me—a deep, burning, furious rage—is stronger than the command. I lock my knees, standing tall, staring right through the iron bars at the monster in the designer suit. "No," I say, my voice eerily calm. Marcus frowns, clearly shocked that I am still standing. "What did you say?" "I said no. I will not take back my rejection. I will not let Liam touch me. I will not serve Sienna. And I will never, ever be a part of this disgusting family again." I take a deep breath, stiffening my spine. The words flow out of me with total certainty. "I, Arya Vance, formally reject Beta Marcus as my father. I sever all ties with your bloodline. And I, Arya Vance, break all bonds with the Sterling Cross Pack. I am no longer your daughter, and I am no longer a member of this pack." A loud, invisible SNAP echoes in the air. Marcus gasps, stumbling backward. His hand flies to his chest. The familial bond and the pack bond—the invisible tethers that connect a wolf to their blood and their territory—are violently ripped away. It hurts me, leaving a hollow, empty void in my chest, but I can see it hurts him worse. His wolf whines in his head, mourning the permanent loss of his pup. "You stupid, selfish b**ch," Marcus spits, his face twisting with genuine hatred as he recovers his balance. "You think you can just cut us off? You think Liam will just let you go? His wolf will tear this building down to get to you." "Then let him," I say, turning my back on him. "Because I would rather be dead than be his shadow." "Fine," Marcus snarls. He grabs the heavy iron keys from his pocket and smacks them against the bars, making me flinch. "You can rot in this cell. Let's see how brave you are after a week in the dark with no food. When you are starving and begging on your knees, maybe Liam will be merciful enough to accept your apology." He turns around and storms up the concrete stairs. The heavy metal door slams shut at the top of the landing, plunging me back into total, suffocating darkness. I slide down the cold wall until I hit the floor. The adrenaline leaves my body all at once, and the tears finally fall. I pull my knees to my chest, sobbing into the quiet dark. I have nothing left. No mate, no father, no pack. I am entirely, completely alone. I cry until my eyes are swollen and my throat is raw. And then, everything changes. The air inside the dungeon suddenly grows impossibly thick. The temperature in the room plummets, a freezing chill sweeping across the concrete floor, making the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. It isn't a normal draft. It is an aura. An aura so violently powerful, so completely suffocating, that my lungs seize up. It is heavier than Liam's. It is heavier than the current Alpha's. It feels like gravity itself just doubled inside the room. The heavy metal door at the top of the stairs creaks open, but no light clicks on. Thud. Thud. Thud. Massive, slow footsteps begin to descend the concrete stairs. There is no rushed panic. Just a slow, predatory, terrifyingly calm descent. I press my back flat against the freezing stone wall, my heart hammering wildly against my ribs. I hold my breath, staring into the pitch-black shadows of the corridor, waiting to see what kind of monster is coming for me.
