Shattered Promise

1522 Words
Arya POV The grand ballroom of the Sterling Cross headquarters is completely transformed. Crystal chandeliers cast a warm, golden glow over the massive space. Tables are draped in black velvet and silver silk. Waiters in crisp white tuxedos weave through the crowd, carrying trays of expensive caviar and imported champagne. And then there's me. I'm wearing a scratchy, ill-fitting black uniform that marks me as basement staff. My job tonight is to stand by the massive double doors and collect empty glasses from the guests as they enter the main hall. It's humiliating work, especially when half the guests are people I grew up with. "Don't drop that tray, Omega. You'll have to pay for the broken glass out of your nonexistent salary." I stiffen. Sienna struts past me, looking like absolute royalty. She is wearing a floor-length emerald green gown that clings to her curves perfectly. Diamonds sparkle at her throat and on her wrists. Our father, Marcus, walks proudly beside her, shaking hands with the board of directors and wealthy pack investors. He doesn't even glance in my direction. "I won't drop it," I mutter, keeping my eyes fixed on the floor. Sienna scoffs, tossing her blonde hair over her shoulder. "Just stay in the shadows where you belong. Tonight is about power and prestige. Things a wolfless freak knows nothing about." She links her arm through our father's, and they walk toward the VIP tables at the front of the room. I grip the edge of my metal tray so hard my fingers ache. I force myself to take a deep breath. Just a few more hours, I remind myself. Liam promised. The thought of Liam is the only thing keeping me from breaking down. Every time an elite pack member shoots me a look of disgust, I just picture Liam's face. I remember the warmth of his hands on my cheeks last night in the woods. I remember the promise he made. A sudden hush falls over the ballroom. The heavy oak doors at the top of the grand staircase swing open. Liam steps out, and all the air leaves my lungs. He looks breathtaking. He is wearing a custom-tailored black suit that emphasizes his broad shoulders and narrow waist. His dark hair is styled perfectly, and he exudes an aura of pure, intoxicating power. Beside him is his father, Alpha Richard, looking older but just as intimidating. As they descend the stairs, the crowd parts with bowed heads, showing their respect for the reigning Alpha and his heir. Liam's eyes scan the massive crowd. He looks right past the board of directors, right past Sienna, who is practically leaning over the velvet rope to get his attention. He searches the room until his blue eyes land on me, hiding in the dark corner by the exit. He pauses. For a split second, a soft, reassuring smile touches his lips. He gives me a tiny nod. My heart does a massive flip in my chest. He remembers. He didn't forget. He is really going to do this. A warm, giddy feeling bubbles up in my stomach, and I offer him a small, secret smile in return. Alpha Richard leads Liam to the center stage. The room is dead silent as the current Alpha taps the microphone. "Welcome, members of the Sterling Cross," Alpha Richard's voice booms through the speakers, echoing off the high ceilings. "For thirty years, I have led this pack. We have grown from a local territory into a global corporate empire. But the time has come for me to step down. It is time for new blood, new vision, and new strength." The crowd erupts into cheers and applause. I watch from my dark corner, my heart hammering wildly against my ribs. "Tonight, my son takes the oath. He takes the Alpha command. And he takes control of this pack's future," Richard continues, turning to Liam. Liam steps up to the podium. He places his hand over his heart, reciting the ancient pack vows. As he speaks the final words, accepting the title, something shifts in the air. It happens in an instant. The moment Liam officially becomes the Alpha, his aura explodes outward, rolling across the ballroom in a wave of invisible, heavy power. Several weaker wolves whimper, bearing their necks in submission. But that isn't what makes me gasp out loud. A scent hits me. It is the smell of pine needles and fresh rain, but magnified a thousand times. It is so strong, so rich, and so completely intoxicating that my knees actually buckle. I have to lean against the wall to keep from falling over. Sparks dance across my skin. My blood runs hot, and a deep, pulling sensation tugs at the very center of my chest, dragging my attention straight to the stage. Mate. The word echoes in my mind, ringing loud and clear even without a wolf to say it. I look up at the podium. Liam is gripping the edges of the wooden stand, his knuckles completely white. He takes a sharp, ragged breath, his chest heaving as the scent hits him too. His head snaps up, his blue eyes locking onto me across the sea of people. His pupils are blown wide. I can see the gold ring around his irises—his wolf is pushing forward. He feels it. We are mates. The goddess actually paired us. It wasn't just a childhood crush; it is our destiny. Tears of pure joy well up in my eyes. I take a hesitant step forward, out of the shadows. I am ready. I am ready for him to call my name, to pull me up onto that stage and tell the entire world that I belong to him. Alpha Richard steps back up to the microphone, smiling proudly at his son. "An Alpha is only as strong as the Luna who stands beside him," Richard announces to the crowd. "Liam, the bond is sacred. Have you found your fated mate? Or will you choose a strong, pure-blooded wolf to help you lead this empire?" The room holds its breath. Liam looks at me. I smile, wiping a stray tear from my cheek. I wait for the words. I wait for him to say Arya. But Liam doesn't say my name. Instead, his gaze shifts. He looks at my father, Beta Marcus. He looks at the board of directors sitting in the front row, the wealthy investors who care only about strength and profits. He looks at the sea of elite wolves who despise the weak. I watch the internal battle war across his face. I watch his wolf fight against his human ambition. And then, I watch his human ambition win. Liam's jaw ticks. The warmth completely vanishes from his blue eyes, replaced by a cold, calculating mask. He looks back at me one last time, and my stomach drops. It feels like a bucket of ice water has just been poured over my head. "I have not found my fated mate," Liam lies into the microphone. His voice doesn't even shake. My heart stops beating. The words ring in my ears, completely drowning out the ambient noise of the ballroom. He's lying. Why is he lying? "This pack requires stability," Liam continues, his voice ringing with cold authority. "Sterling Cross needs a Luna who embodies power, perfection, and pure blood. I need a Luna who commands respect. Therefore, I have made my choice." He extends his hand toward the VIP tables. "Sienna Vance. Come join your Alpha." The crowd erupts into a deafening roar of applause. Sienna lets out a theatrical gasp of surprise, though her smug, triumphant smile tells a completely different story. My father beams with pride, patting her on the back as she eagerly pushes past the velvet rope and rushes up the stairs to the stage. She places her hand in Liam's. He pulls her close, wrapping his arm around her waist. The physical pain of the mate bond being denied rips through my chest like a jagged knife. I can't breathe. My lungs refuse to pull in air. My vision blurs with tears, but I can't look away. I watch the boy who held me in the woods last night, the boy who promised to save me, lean down and press his lips against my sister's cheek. The metal tray slips from my numb fingers. CRASH. The heavy tray hits the marble floor. Dozens of champagne flutes shatter into a thousand pieces, the sharp sound cutting through the applause near the back of the room. A few guests turn to glare at me, whispering insults about the clumsy, useless Omega ruining the atmosphere. Liam looks up at the sound. His eyes meet mine across the room. He sees me standing in a puddle of broken glass, tears streaming down my face, completely shattered. But he doesn't pull away from Sienna. He doesn't look sorry. He just looks at me with a cold, dismissive stare. He made his choice. A wolfless weakling is entirely unfit for a corporate Alpha. I turn around and run.
