"Did you see that? The rejected one's getting a second chance!"
"Looks like even the alpha can't resist a cursed pity."
"Who would've thought? The omega who couldn't even keep her own alpha, is now being carried off by another."
The whispers of the crowd swirled around me. But mostly, it is confusing, as I watched Gideon planing to take me away. I had hoped for Corey's attention, not Gideon's sudden intervention.
Why did he do this?
I was completely clueless. The crowd's whispers only made me more perplexed.
All of a sudden, Amelia's cruel laughter cut through the air. "Well, well, well, looks like the rejected omega found herself a new savior. How pathetic, Eleanor." She enjoyed my humiliation, like always.
"Seems like you're still just a burden, no matter who tries to rescue you."
Following that was a roar of laughter from the crowd. Corey's face tightened into a scowl as he looked at Gideon giving a hand to Eleanor. It was clear that he wasn't pleased with this sudden... intervention into his affairs. This was his territory!
Corey's expression shifted from annoyance to determination.
"Hold on there." He stepped forward, clearly intent on stopping Gideon, "What do you think you're doing? You can't simply take her away like that. Gideon Caldwell."
He called his full name. The tension between them was so palpable that anyone could feel it.
However, Gideon didn't seem to care about all the tensions, and replied calmly, "Let go of her, or I'll let you see what our pack soldiers are made of."
Corey's retort with arrogance. "No need to bother the soldiers. Let's see what you've got, the future alpha king."
In an instant, they shifted into their wolf forms. Growls rumbled from deep within their chests. Fur bristled, and muscles flexed, both alphas prepared to engage in a primal battle.
Corey's jaws snapped close to Gideon's shoulder, but Gideon twisted away, narrowly avoiding the attack. And then Gideon took advantage of Corey's unpreparedness to attack suddenly, fiercely. The clash of their bodies echoed through the night as they fought. Gideon's strength proved superior. He claimed his unquestionable dominance.
"Corey, do you yield?" Alpha Gideon's voice was full of coldness.
"I..." Corey got one hand on the ground, doubled over, gasping for breath, "no, I won't yield."
"Oh, what a pity," after saying this, Alpha Gideon's wolf, Raymond, rushed to him and bit Corey hard on the neck.
Corey's wolf, Chase, screamed in pain and suddenly turned into his human form.
"I yield, I yield! Please stop, Alpha Gideon!" Corey shouted, "You can take Eleanor away as you want!"
As Corey's defeat became evident, my heart ached badly. Despite his cruelty, I had never seen him in such a vulnerable position. And then Alpha Gideon's gaze met mine. I quickly moved my eyes away to avoid meeting his eyes.
I still can't understand why he did that. Fighting over a cursed omega?
But what's done was done. I was handed over by Corey.
I wanted to rush to Corey and help him up, but before I could realize it, I was being taken by Alpha Gideon. He grabbed my arm and got me out of the crowd.
I couldn't help looking back at Corey, who was still kneeling on the ground, breathing heavily. My sister went to him and from afar.
I could feel those hateful glances. I tried to escape, but Alpha Gideon's hands held my wrist so tightly that I didn't get any chance to run.Gideon was walking fast, before I could realize that they all disappeared from my sight..Outside the gate of the prom, once we were alone, away from the crowd and the chaos, Alpha Gideon immediately let go of me.
"He treated you like that, you still want to help him?" he said, stony-faced. But I didn't know why. I could feel him being unpleased.
"How do you know I want to help him?" I asked him.
"We're mated, remember?" He looked at the end of the road, like waiting for something. "My wolf can know what you are thinking."
"But why can't I feel you?" I tried to feel his wolf but failed.
"Because you are a weak omega." again, stony-faced.
"Oh, that hurts." I murmured.
"But why did you save a weak omega like me?"
"Because Corey is impotent." He looked distant.
Defiance welled up within me. And I whispered in a quiet act of rebellion, "Co... Corey is our pack's alpha. You can't be so disrespectful to my... our alpha."
Gideon seemed not to anticipate that I would talk back. His displeasure was evident in his tone, but at the same time, he stated calmly by saying, "He has rejected you."
The mark bitten by Corey on the back of my neck is starting to hurt again. It was a physical reminder of Corey's rejection.
"Don't overthink. The reason I saved you is simply that it was the right thing to do. I don't have time to save people all day."
While he was talking, he waved directly towards a silver luxury car I could not name it. Its engine hummed softly.
The car eased to a stop in front of us. A quite delightful guy with great golden hair leaned out of the window. His eyes widened as he saw me standing beside Gideon.
He whistled and teased, "Yo man, new girl?"
"What did you say, Beta Larry."
Larry's voice faltered as he caught Gideon's sudden change of expression, "no... nothing."
"Get in the car." Gideon's voice was firm, leaving no room for negotiation.
"Me?" I stared at the lavish interior of the car, then down at my damp skirt, feeling a bit out of place.
"Yes."
"Where are you taking me?" I inquired cautiously, worrying that he would be serious about his words at the ball.
"Send you home, of course. Or you'd rather walk?"
I looked around. It was all dark, and then I thought about how far away my home was. I realized that getting in the car seemed to be my only option.
As if seeing my hesitation, Larry encouraged, "Hop up girl. Let Larry get you a ride!"
Fine.
I settled into the backseat of the car, sitting right next to Gideon, a giant cold iceberg.
Before I knew it, I was back at my doorstep. Stepping out of the car, I was met with an unusual sight.
My dad, who usually drowned his sorrows in alcohol, appeared surprisingly sober. A grin stretched across his face as his gaze landed on Gideon and me. His warmth towards me was palpable, and he enthusiastically invited us into the house.Gideon, however, declined the offer.
"Thanks for your kindness. I'm just here to take your daughter home. We won't be a bother."
Father persisted, his jovial tone not waning.
"Why treat us like strangers? We'll be family soon."
How dare Father say something like that! I was shocked and looked up at Alpha Gideon. His eyes were also filled with confusion, but he managed to hide it.
Father's enthusiasm didn't waver as he continued, "Alpha Finley of Silverthorn Pack spoke to me on the phone earlier tonight. He mentioned he'd be paying us a visit tomorrow to discuss further your marriage. But I didn't expect Alpha Gideon would bring my daughter back in person."
At that unexpected revelation, I was left to grapple with the emotions that had taken me from my 18-year-old prom to this very moment.
I got saved by my second chance mate from my long-craving mate, and the second chance mate would be my future husband?!
What kind of thing was this!
