Chapter 2
(Penance P O.V.)
Jasmine looked at me and gave me a small sad smile as we headed to the table behind the kitchens to get our food and water. "I love you too and so does mom, you shouldn't hide your pain from us. You always take care of us, let us help you big sis. We can't stop you from getting hurt but we could at the very least help you clean your wounds and be there for you. That's what family does for each other." Jasmine says in a meaningful whisper.
I look into her eyes and see how fiercely determined she is about this and I am again reminded why I love her so deeply. Why I'd do anything including give up my life for her. I give her a big smile and would hug her if the warriors weren't watching. "I promise I won't hide my wounds from you anymore lil sis, I wouldn't want you to hide your pain from me either. It wasn't fair of me to do it to you and mom." I say in loving whisper. We grab our food and water smiling at each other.
We then proceed to go sit down in the shade of our favorite tree to eat our breakfast together.
After we hand in our bowls and cups Jasmine quickly clasps hands with me and says "good luck" with worry plain on her face. I manage a smile and hide the dread that is creeping into my stomach knowing I now had to head towards the pack house. "I'll be fine, please don't worry about me and concentrate on your duties," I say with a steady confidence I don't feel. "I'll see you and mom at dinner." I let go of her hands trying to look stronger than I feel as I turn to go down the path to the pack house.
Dread fills me with every step closer I take towards the pack house as I pray to the moon goddess I make it through my duties there today without being hurt. The pack house is home to most of the single members of the pack. Families have their own small homes lining the road behind the pack house leading up to the bigger houses of elite warriors and the mansion like houses of the top ranking pack members like the Alpha, Beta and Gamma of the Blood Moon pack.
As I turn the bend in the path I see the pack house, It's white with navy blue trim on doors and windows. It has five floors, four of those floors are made up of bedrooms for pack members with a shared bathroom/shower room on each floor. The top most floor of the pack house is rooms reserved for special guests of the pack, though that is rare, not many packs are fool hardy or brave enough to visit this pack even if they are allies. Also the top floor holds the Alpha's office. Each room has its own small bathroom, same as the Alpha's office. I walk into the pack house and am glad to see that it is mostly other people like me here to do the morning cleaning. Most of the pack members should be off to morning training.
I head to the door that holds the stairs the slaves use to get up and down the multiple floors in the pack house. We are not allowed to use the main stairs the pack uses, we are to clean and stay out of the way. I start the trek up the narrow stairs to the top floor. I really hate these stairs, they are so narrow that if you need to pass anyone you have to squeeze against the wall.
I got lucky this time and managed to get to the top floor without having to pass anyone. I open the door to the top floor and quietly as I can walk down the hall to the supply closet by the Alpha's office to grab cleaning supplies. I hear muffled voices in the Alpha's office, so I quietly open the door and ease into the supply room so hopefully they don't hear me. I don't know who was in the office with the Alpha but I knew that I didn't want them or the Alpha to know I was up here.
I went to ease the door shut all the way when the Alpha's door opened, I froze with the door almost closed, afraid they would see the door move. I barely breathed and did my best to slow my hearts frantic movement so it wouldn't draw their attention. They haven't seen, heard or smelled me yet. If I was truly lucky the overpowering smell of cleaning products in here will hopefully mask my smell from them.
I hear the Alpha's voice from the open door of his office, It doesn't sound like they are in the hallway yet. "So everything for the sale is almost complete. I need you to make sure the ones to be sold are cleaned for their new owners. To keep them from asking questions say the cleaning is because of an outbreak of lice that we don't want spreading to the pack. We don't want anyone to try to escape with their families so they don't get separated. Especially the ones with children. We will lose money having to kill the runners as an example to the others." The Alpha's voice is void of emotion as he says this, how can anyone talk about separating families and selling them so coldly.
He truly is a monster, I knew he was evil but this just confirms how black his heart really is. "Yes Alpha, it will be done, but what about the silver haired woman? I know you got a particularly good price from Viktor Von Bloodrik for her. It's just that your oldest son Zander has shown an interest in her being one of his breeding slaves after he takes on the Alpha position." says Beta Richard and my blood runs cold with terror at his words.
I don't know which is a worse fate being sold to the most brutal and cruel vampire known to history or being given to the monster that is the Alpha's oldest son to take his pleasure from me and force me to birth what is basically emergency heirs for him in case his mate can't birth him strong enough children or something happens to them.
"He can pick another slave for that honor, we have plenty to choose from, I am doing this for him. These slaves will not only bring us money but alliances that will secure this packs future as the biggest and strongest pack in this state and most of the country. Even the Alpha king would pause to try and mess with our pack. This is for his future as Alpha, we not only get money for that slave but a treaty with the most powerful and ruthless vampire clan in the whole country. Her hair and eyes make her a rare product to be sold and it definitely caught Viktors eye." The Alpha said with a hint of amusement in his voice.
I held my breath because they were right outside of the supply closet door, closing the door to the Alpha's office. "As always you know best Alpha, I will go get started on preparing things so the slaves to be sold can be washed before they are sent to their new owners in three weeks. Shall I have them given clean clothes as well?" The Beta asks as they walk down the hallway voices getting quieter the farther away from the supply closet door they get. "Yes, that would be a good idea, we want them looking presentable for their new owners." I barely hear the Alpha's answer as they head for the main stairwell that leads to the lower levels.
