Mr Gale did not see Agnes. By the time his conversation with Jude became more intense, she sneaked into an inner room still inside Jude's office, and locked herself up there.
The conversation she happened to listen to was troublesome enough, and she didn't want Mr Gale to see her there and start another round of quarelling. Only God knew who he was to Jude and how his seeing her there would affect him.
Eventually, Mr Gale left.
Jude stared at the man's back as he walked out of the office, and when Mr Gale banged the door shut, Jude slammed his fist on his table.
His dark eyes could bore a hole in the door because of how intensely he looked at it. As if the door was Mr Gale himself.
