Agnes' mother stared at Jude, trying to figure out if Agnes had told him that Jake was there. She remembered Agnes telling her that she was just going to make a quick drive into the city and be back in no time to take Jake home. She even told her that Jude was not aware of her being outdoors, so Agnes' mother knew what Jude was doing.
Obviously, he had gone home and not seen Agnes anywhere. Maybe he had even waited for her for a while and when she didn't return, even after the day was getting dark, he thought about going and collecting his baby, just so that Agnes would be scared when she finds out that he had taken the baby away.
Jude waited for Agnes' mother to say something, but the old lady was tongue-tied
