Ryan placed a plate full of cookies in front of me. I didn’t know he could bake. The cookies actually looked edible, and for some reason, I had a feeling they were going to taste good.
I stared at the plate, debating whether to eat them or not.
“I didn’t poison you, if that’s what you’re thinking,” he said before placing a cup of milk in front of me too.
He slowly picked up one of the cookies and took a bite. I still didn’t touch the food.
Then he grabbed the cup of milk and took a sip.
“See? Nothing happened to me.”
I slowly picked up a cookie and took a bite.
It tasted really good.
I didn’t know Ryan was such a good cook.
“I’ve caught the boys who assaulted you,” he said, sitting down opposite me. “I want to know what they did to you, Maven.”
“Can you just forget about it? It’s over already,” I muttered without even looking at him.
“You still think I’m the one who sent them after you,” he said quietly.
“What do you want me to think?” I asked, finally glancing up at him. “You said you wanted to torture me, so if someone asked me who my number one villain is, I’d gladly say your name.”
“Eat up. The food is getting cold,” he said calmly. “I promise I’ll prove to you that I didn’t send those guys.”
He walked toward the guest room — or maybe I should just call it his room now since he practically lived there whenever his parents traveled.
I continued eating in silence.

I was so f*****g bored at home.
I had already finished studying and completed all my assignments, so I walked into the living room to search for a movie that might actually keep me entertained.
“Do you want to watch a movie?” Ryan asked from behind me, making me nearly jump out of my skin.
“Yeah. I’m so bored,” I muttered, sitting on the couch.
He disappeared for a moment before returning with a bag of snacks.
“My mum practically forced you to do this,” I said.
I already knew my mum wanted me to stay home today and relax.
He nodded, handing me the snacks before sitting beside me.
“I don’t want to watch a movie with you,” I muttered.
“Do I have a choice? Your mum told me to look after you, so that’s exactly what I’m doing,” he replied.
I rolled my eyes and continued searching until I finally found a movie to watch.
30 minutes later...
“This girl’s life is just like mine,” I muttered softly, not realizing Ryan had heard me.
“Your life and hers are different,” he said quietly. “Tell me what really happened that night, Maven.”
He turned fully toward me, his eyes fixed on mine.
I didn’t know why he cared so much about what happened that night when it was none of his business.
“None of your business,” I muttered again.
“You need to f*****g tell me what happened, Maven,” he snapped suddenly.
Anger immediately rose inside me.
Who the hell did he think he was?
“I won’t say anything if I don’t want to,” I spat angrily.
“Can you please tell me?” he asked in a much lower voice.
Ryan never said please — not even when we were younger.
So why was he pleading with me now?
“Why do you care?” I asked.
“Because I—”
He cut himself off abruptly, standing up and walking to his room.
Something was definitely wrong with him, but I didn’t know what it was.
He was about to say something important just now.
What was it?
❣️❣️❣️
It was around 5:30 p.m. when I woke up.
I walked into the kitchen and found Ryan cooking again. His face carried that same cold expression, and I hated the fact that I noticed things like that about him.
I sat down quietly.
Mrs. Madeline had gone on vacation two days ago, and surprisingly, I missed her a little.
“Your mum and dad aren’t coming home tonight,” Ryan said.
I simply nodded.
He placed a plate of pasta in front of me before walking back to his room.
Something was really wrong with him, and I didn’t know what it was.
Not that I should care anyway.

The next morning, I felt much better and decided to go to school.
My phone buzzed with a text from Bianca.
Bianca: I can’t wait to come back. I really missed you.
Me: Me too.
I locked my phone and walked straight to my locker.
No one ever really tried talking to me anymore, but I didn’t even feel lonely.
I guessed I was already used to being alone.
“Hey there, b***h,” Julian said while walking toward me.
Great. I was probably going to get bullied again today.
I turned to look at him. Reed and Chase stood beside him, but Ryan wasn’t there.
“Are you okay, Maven? Did those guys touch you?” Reed asked while searching my face worriedly.
I ignored him and walked away.
I sat down in class and brought out my notebook.
A few minutes later, our class teacher walked in. Everyone was present, including Ryan, whose gaze I continued ignoring.
“We have a new transfer student,” the teacher announced. “You guys should be nice to him. Come in, Shane.”
A handsome guy with blond hair and gray eyes walked into the classroom.
I had to admit he was really good-looking.
But not as good-looking as Ryan.
Why the f**k was I even thinking about him?
“Oh my God, he’s hot... but Ryan is still better-looking,” the girl behind me whispered, making the others murmur in agreement.
“Can you introduce yourself?” the teacher asked.
“I’m Shane Dawson,” he said simply.
“You can sit anywhere you want,” the teacher replied.
To my surprise, Shane started walking toward me before taking the empty seat beside mine.
Almost immediately, I could feel several girls glaring daggers at me.
“She’s such a slut. That’s why Ryan bullies her,” the girl sitting in front of me muttered.
I sighed quietly.
Ryan’s gaze met mine, but I quickly looked away.
Then my eyes landed on Shane again, and something about those gray eyes felt strangely familiar.
Who the hell was Shane?
