Rory sat beside Jim's hospital bed, her hands fidgeting in her lap as she watched his chest rise and fall with each assisted breath. The beeping of the machines and the whoosh of the ventilator were the only sounds breaking the heavy silence of the room. She still couldn't believe that Sam was gone. Just like that, in the blink of an eye, her husband, her best friend, the father of her unborn child, had been taken from her. And now, Jim, her brother-in-law and closest confidant, lay unconscious, his life hanging by a thread. It was almost too much to bear, the thought of losing them both. Rory felt like she was drowning in grief, barely able to keep her head above water. But she knew she had to stay strong, for herself, for Jim, and for the baby growing inside her.
