Chapter 5: The Metamorphosis "Stand up straight, turn around, and let me see what three years of blood, sweat, and sleepless nights actually looks like," Roxy commanded, leaning against the doorframe of the penthouse dressing room with a proud smirk. I stepped out from behind the privacy screen, the heavy silk of the emerald green dress whispering against my skin. "Well? Is it enough?" Roxy’s jaw literally dropped. "Enough? Clara, you look like a million bucks." I caught my reflection in the full-length mirror, a thrill of cold satisfaction running through my veins. The pregnancy weight had melted into sharp, lean curves, my thick glasses were gone, and the sleek, effortlessly sexy tailoring felt less like clothing and more like tactical armor. "Good," I replied. "I need to look the part if we're going to land these high-society clients. No one can ever look at me and see the broken girl I used to be." By the two-year mark, our rising cash flow allowed me to finally smuggle my mother out of our old town. When she walked into my apartment, she dropped her bags, her face turning entirely pale. "Oh my god," she breathed, her hands flying to her mouth. "Bella? No... they told me you were dead. The estate manager said you fell into the river after you ran!" I choked back a sob, rushing forward to grab her shaking hands. The questions were already pouring out of her, her eyes wide with frantic confusion. I couldn't tell her everything, not yet. "Mom, please, just breathe," I urged, pulling her into a tight hug as she wept against my shoulder. "Come inside. Just sit down, let me get you some water, and I’ll explain everything. I promise." I guided her over to the couch, away from the quiet nursery where Emily was sleeping. For now, just holding her alive was enough. Three Years Later "Clara, look at this retainer fee!" Roxy burst into our office, slamming a tablet onto my desk. "An international tycoon is hosting a private summit. The contract is under an anonymous holding company, but the payout can buy you and Emily a permanent way out of the country." The sheer scale of the wealth involved made my chest tighten. "Apply for it," I said, my voice firm. "Don't let them pick anyone else." By the fourth night of the event, everything ran perfectly. I was on the floor monitoring the VIP lounge, wearing a custom, emerald green silk dress that was impossible to look away from. It featured a dangerously low-cut back, a daringly high slit, and a plunging neckline that subtly hinted at everything while revealing just enough. A tailored black blazer was draped loosely over my shoulders to ground the look with corporate authority, but the contrast only made it more arresting. From the edge of the crowd, I watched the host step up to the microphone to address the room. Broad shoulders, a flawless charcoal suit, and dark, piercing eyes. The moment his commanding voice filled the room, the air vanished from my lungs. Sebastian. My heart slammed violently against my ribs. I froze, my knuckles turning white against my iPad as his eyes swept the room and locked directly onto me. Sebastian's voice didn't falter as he finished his speech, but his dark eyes narrowed into a sharp, lethal focus, tracking the lines of my face and the curve of my dress across the crowded space. The moment he stepped down from the stage, he bypassed the crowding investors, ignoring the hands reached out to greet him, and walked straight toward the perimeter where I stood. There was nowhere for me to run without causing a massive scene. He stopped just a foot away, crowding my space, the scent of his expensive cologne instantly overwhelming my senses. His heavy gaze traveled deliberately down the daring plunge of my dress, lingering on my exposed collarbone before locking onto my uncovered face. The silence between us was suffocating. "Sebastian Carter," he murmured, taking my hand. He bowed his head smoothly, pressing a deliberate kiss to the back of my knuckles while his dark eyes held mine captive. Straightening up, his fingers lingered against mine. “But something tells me you already knew that. Please do tell me, who do I have the pleasure of thanking for such a flawless evening?" "Clara Bennett, Mr. Carter," I replied softly, a slight, wicked smile touching my lips. "A good director always does her homework.” He took a glass of champagne from a passing waiter's tray and held it out to me. "Drink, Miss Bennett?" "I'm on duty, Mr. Carter," I replied, forcing my chin up and keeping my voice remarkably level. "How can my agency assist you tonight?" Sebastian set the glass down on a high table behind him, never breaking eye contact. Isabella Simmons was a ghost from his past, and I was a striking, powerful executive standing in his VIP lounge. He stepped an inch closer, keeping his posture entirely professional, but his voice dropped to a smooth, magnetic baritone. "Tell me, Miss Bennett," he murmured, his eyes locking onto mine with an uncharacteristic curiosity. "Have we met before?" "I highly doubt it," I lied smoothly, offering a flawless, detached corporate smile. "I've never managed an event for Carter International until tonight." Deep down, beneath the layers of my carefully built armor, a tiny, mustard-seed-sized flutter stirred at the familiar warmth of his gaze. But I buried it instantly. I was unshaken. I was Clara Bennett. Sebastian studied my face for a beat longer, a rare, intrigued smile pulling at the corner of his lips. He accepted the boundary, but he didn't back down. "A shame," he said softly, his eyes flashing with a quiet, deliberate charm. "Because your agency's execution tonight has been flawless. I find myself suddenly very eager to extend this contract for our upcoming international tour." He leaned in just a fraction, his tone professional, yet laced with an helical, intoxicating undercurrent. "I look forward to working with you closely, Miss Bennett. I'd love to see those beautiful brains of yours in action." I tilted my head slightly, letting my gaze drift down to his lips for a fraction of a second before meeting his eyes again. A small, slightly wicked smile touched my lips. "Careful, Mr. Carter," I whispered, my voice rich with a quiet, playful heat. "If you analyze my brains too closely, you might find yourself completely distracted from your business." Sebastian’s breath caught, his eyes darkening instantly with a sudden, sharp hunger. The familiar hint of naughtiness completely hooked him, leaving him visibly eager, and desperately determined. "Then I suppose I'll just have to risk the distraction, Miss Bennett," he murmured, his gaze drifting slowly down to my lips before locking back onto my eyes. "In fact, I look forward to it." He stepped back with a rare, devastating smile, leaving me breathless in the middle of the crowded room. My heart hammered violently against my ribs as I watched him walk away. He didn't know who I was, but playing this close to the fire meant it was only a matter of time before I got burned.
