CHAPTER TWENTY“Ann, I love you,” Tony sighed. He was kneeling by her as he spoke, his arms around her, his lips pressed against her fair hair. He had come to the Nursing Home as was usual at his first available moment. It was just before luncheon and Evelyn, who had been with Ann during the morning, had already gone back to the hotel. Tony had met one of the Nurses on the stairs and she had told him that he might go in for a few minutes while she was bringing up Ann’s luncheon. Tony had meant to speak to her conventionally, to make her laugh and perhaps chatter with him as she had done before Ann’s illness. But when he found himself alone with her and had looked down on her lying there frail, white and so lovely, he had lost his head and his voice. He had merely dropped to his knees
