9 Marry Me

812 Words
Taken aback, Rena re-read the messages herself. Looking back, she remembered how funny "Prince of Fortune" was when he talked to her. He would crack jokes and send humorous pictures when he wasn't talking to her about all of his past adventures.   She couldn't believe how she failed to notice how different this Mr. Caswell was to the one she met in person. It was as contrasting as hot and cold, and soft and hard.   "Then why are you here?" Rena questioned after she gathered her thoughts. "This table was reserved by Mr. Caswell- Er, the Mr. Caswell that I know," she stuttered.   The man before her smiled for the first time and leaned back in his chair. "Well, have you checked the time?" he asked in response. Right, I was five minutes early, and about twenty minutes have passed since then, so... Rena sucked in a breath at the realization that "Prince of Fortune" never showed up, and that this table was now reserved to the cold Mr. Caswell.    She blushed when all the pieces fit together. "I am so sorry, Mr. Caswell," she said sincerely. "I didn't mean to ruin your blind date."   "Your apology is useless to me," he replied, his tone icy.   "Well, what is it that you want then?"   Mr. Caswell met Rena's gaze, unflinching. "Marry me," he said calmly. "Only then will I forgive you."   Rena c****d her head to the side, uncertain that she heard him correctly. "Excuse me?"   "You heard me."   "Marry you? Are you feeling alright?" she asked in pure disbelief.    "Yes." Mr. Caswell acted as if he was making a professional business deal and not a proposal. Clearly, this matter was not that big of a deal to him. Rena felt a little lightheaded. What was with today? First, she got a bouquet from a stranger, and now one of them was proposing to her? Was this how April Fools Day usually worked?   She didn't understand where this man was coming from. They just met around five minutes ago, and now he wants to marry her. What on earth would possess him to do such a thing?   Rena couldn't help but remember her high school friend who had a one night stand with a rich boy, who convinced her to sleep with him. When Rena's friend found out that she was pregnant, the boy disappeared and was never heard from again.   Was Mr. Caswell the same as that boy? Would he, too, use his wealth to get what he wanted? But, Rena knew that she would never be as stupid and naive as her high school friend.   She squared her shoulders. "Mr. Caswell, I am positive that you can convince Lucy to marry you. Once you explain the situation, I am sure that she will fall right into your arms. After all, you are a handsome man," she said sweetly.   Mr. Caswell's expression remained serious. "You must marry me," he reiterated.   "Then I am sorry to tell you that I already have a husband," Rena fibbed. It wasn't her best lie, but she didn't have time to come up with a better one. All she wanted was for Mr. Caswell to leave her alone.   The man went quiet, and she thought she was making progress. "Oh, I have an idea," she exclaimed suddenly. "If you give me Lucy's number, then I bet I can get her to come to you in three days!"   Mr. Caswell smiled again and offered Rena his palm. "Your phone," he requested.   She nodded and passed him her device, and watched as he punched in a number. He then stood up and left without another word.   Rena was hard-pressed to believe that such a good-looking man wasn't intentionally created in a lab somewhere. His features were too perfect, and his body was also exceptional. Mr. Caswell had the looks to rival any popular male model.   His appearance was enough to make her feel a little nervous, but she maintained her composure. She reasoned that he wasn't the only good-looking man that existed on the planet, so he wasn't that special.    Now that Mr. Caswell was gone, Rena turned her attention to "Prince of Fortune." Why did this mystery man also say that he was a Caswell? And why didn't he show up? A lot of the embarrassment could have been avoided if he had just honored their meeting time.   She decided to type out a quick message to inform him that they will meet up some other time, as this time didn't work out. Rena also left her bouquet with the waitress and began to walk out of the cafe.   Out of nowhere, a little boy ran towards Rena and grabbed on to her leg. Confused, she looked down at the child and was about to ask him what was wrong when she heard two women talking nearby.
