What are you hiding from me, Sebastian?” Isabella's voice quivered slightly when she met Sebastian in the dimly lit study. Apart from the distant clock, the room was utterly quiet. However, the atmosphere was thick with tension. The dancing flames cast an unsettling light on Sebastian's angular face as he stood in the dim corner by the fireplace. "What makes you think I'm keeping something from you?” Sebastian replied, his tone as cold as ever. His gaze was fixed on the fire, ignoring her completely as if its warmth was more comforting. Isabella moved closer, feeling her heart pounding in her chest. "You've avoided me from the time I came here. You hardly communicate with me, and when you do, it feels like I am unknown to you, an inconvenience. Although you consented to this marriage, it is evident that you did not truly desire it. Sebastian, what is it that you're keeping from me?” Sebastian finally turned to face her, his dark eyes locking onto hers with an intensity that made her breath catch. “This marriage was never meant to be about love, Isabella. Our fathers, not us, made the choices that brought us here. I didn't choose this life either”. “I know that,” Isabella said, She spoke in a more gentle tone. "I'm trying to figure out what's really happening. There's more to this than just business. Why was it so important to your father that this marriage take place? And why did you agree?” Sebastian's jaw tightened, and a flash of something—pain, rage, regret—flitted over his gaze before being instantly masked. “My reasons are my own. You’re better off not knowing.” Isabella's irritation boiled over. "You cannot ask me to live in this place, in this marriage, and simply accept it! Sebastian, I am your wife now, whether we like it or not. I believe it is my right to understand the challenges I will be facing.” Sebastian was quiet for a second, with no expression on his face. He quickly walked towards the other person, surprising them. He seized her arm and pulled her into close proximity, their faces mere inches apart. "Do you want to know who you are dealing with?”He actively fluttered. "Throughout his life, he was cunning and determined to achieve his goals. He was famously ruthless and would stop at nothing to succeed, often outwitting those who stood in his way, including his own father.Whether you like it, you are part of this now. Therefore, instead of asking questions, follow the instructions. " Isabella's eyes widened, and her heartbeat raced with the sudden intensity of his words. “You don’t have to protect me, Sebastian. I can handle the truth.” Sebastian removed his grip on her arm and stepped back, as if the intimacy had been too much. "The truth is, Isabella, that this marriage is simply another step in a very deadly game. And I intend to win, no matter the cost.” A cold silence fell between them, and Isabella could feel the walls closing in around her, the weight of her predicament pushing down like a vise. She came to help her dad, but things were much riskier than she expected. "I have something to lose too," she whispered, her voice trembling. "I didn't get married to just watch everything go wrong. I am not going to be a pawn in your game, Sebastian. I am going to fight for what is mine.” Sebastian stared at her for a long time, as if looking for something in her eyes—possibly fear or weakness. But when he spoke again, his voice was calmer and more accepting. "Then we will fight together. But do not expect it to be simple." Before Isabella could react, the door to the study flung wide, and her devoted friend, Evelyn Bennett, walked inside, her face tight. "Isabella, we need to talk," Evelyn murmured, her gaze moving between Isabella and Sebastian. “"What is that?" Isabella inquired, noticing the urgency in her friend's tone. Evelyn hesitated, glancing at Sebastian, who raised an eyebrow in curiosity. “It’s about your father,” she said finally. “I overheard something—something important. But we can’t talk here.” Isabella's heart raced with fear as she quickly looked at Sebastian and asked, "What did you just hear?” Evelyn shook her head, her expression grave. “Not here, Isabella. We need to go somewhere safe.” Sebastian’s gaze narrowed, his suspicion evident. “What’s going on?” Evelyn ignored him, her focus solely on Isabella. “Please, Isabella. We need to go now.” Isabella felt a surge of fear and urgency, and without another word, she nodded, following Evelyn out of the study. Sebastian was deep in thought as they left. Isabella and Evelyn quietly left the mansion and went into the garden to enjoy the nice, cool night. The moon made long shadows on the well-organized fields. The only noises were the soft movement of leaves and the faraway, sad hoot of an owl. Isabella's curiosity piqued, and she wondered what important information Evelyn might have accidentally overheard. They paused beneath a great oak tree, away from the mansion's watchful eyes. Evelyn turned to Isabella, her face pale and tense. “I was in the library earlier, looking for some papers when I overheard Victor and one of his men talking. They mentioned your father, Isabella. They said something about...a deal.” “A deal?” Isabella repeated, her heart pounding. “What kind of deal?” Evelyn took a deep breath, her eyes filled with worry. "Victor offered to bring your father out of prison if you marry Sebastian. But that is not all. He stated...he indicated he's not going to keep that commitment." Isabella was startled when she felt the earth trembling beneath her and she gasped in surprise. “What? But that was the entire point of the marriage! He promised—” “He lied, Isabella,” Evelyn interrupted, her voice urgent. “Victor doesn’t care about your father. He only wanted to use you to control Sebastian. After achieving his goal, he plans to leave your father to languish in jail.” Isabella was profoundly affected by the words, feeling as if she had been hit hard and struggled to catch her breath. Her eyesight became hazy, causing her to stagger back and rely on the tree for stability. "No...he cannot do this. I did everything he asked—I married Sebastian! He can’t just…” Evelyn reached out, gripping Isabella’s arm to steady her. “We need to find another way to save your father. You can’t trust Victor. "He's playing a much larger game than we imagined." Isabella's head rattled as she tried to absorb the magnitude of what Evelyn said. If Victor had no intention of liberating her father, everything she had done—the sacrifices, the marriage—would have been in vain. She felt a deep and overwhelming flash of wrath rise within her. "We can't let him get away with this," Isabella hissed between teeth clenching her voice quivering with fury. "There has to be something we can do." Evelyn nodded, her expression determined. “There is. We need to gather evidence—something that proves Victor’s been lying, something we can use to leverage him into freeing your father. But we have to be careful. If he finds out what we’re up to…” Isabella straightened, wiping the tears from her eyes, her resolve hardening. “He won’t find out. We’ll be careful, and we’ll find a way to save my father. I won’t let Victor destroy everything.” Evelyn grabbed her hand and gave a faint but guaranteeing smile. "We'll get through it, Isabella. Together.” As they prepared to return to the mansion, the sound of rustle from the nearby bushes made them stop. Isabella's heart was racing, and she exchanged worried glances with Evelyn. They were both aware that the estate was strictly guarded, and any movement in the shadows may indicate disaster. “Who’s there?” Isabella cried out, her voice shaking slightly. For a minute, there was only silence. Then a man emerged from the shadows, and Isabella's blood ran cold. It was Sebastian. He stood silently with an inscrutable expression, his eyes holding an emotion that Isabella couldn't quite identify. A sinking feeling washed over her as she realized he had heard their entire conversation. Sebastian asked calmly, but with a warning edge, “if you intended to go against his father.” Isabella's heart sank as she understood the uncertainty of her circumstances. Sebastian found himself torn between his allegiance to his father and his secret motives. She had no idea which side he was truly on—or what he would do next. “Sebastian, I...” Isabella started speaking but struggled to find the right words. She frantically tried to come up with an explanation that wouldn't cause more problems. Sebastian moved closer, his eyes locked on her, his emotions hidden behind his expression. “You are completely unaware of the consequences, Isabella.” Isabella felt a lump in her throat as she struggled with feelings of fear and uncertainty. “Can you inform me, Sebastian, about what I'm getting myself into?” Sebastian's expression became darker as he averted his gaze, indicating an internal struggle. When he eventually talked, his soft tone was tinged with something that made Isabella shiver. “There are things that you do not comprehend, things that have the potential to bring harm to both of us.”
