Chapter 3: Shadows of Doubt.

"Is trust too much to ask, Sebastian?” Morning sunlight filtered dimly through the heavy curtains of the dining room of the Blackwood estate, casting a faint light on the ornate table where Isabella and Sebastian sat. The air was heavy with silence, an undeniable tension that had been growing since the previous night when Sebastian overheard Isabella and Evelyn talking about their scheme to reveal Victor's deceit. Sebastian sipped his coffee and gazed at the newspaper before him, but Isabella suspected he wasn't genuinely reading it. She spends the entire night replaying Sebastian's threatening words in her head, contemplating the things that are beyond understanding and have the potential to ruin them both. Unable to endure the silence any longer, she spoke up, "Sebastian, we need to discuss what happened last night.” Sebastian remained focused on his task, his tone as detached and calm as usual. “What is there to discuss?” Isabella's frustration became evident. "You caught all of that, didn't you?” You know what your father's plan is.” Sebastian finally set the newspaper down, meeting her gaze with an unreadable expression. “And what if I do?” Isabella's fists tightened beneath the table. “So you were aware he was exploiting me, exploiting us, to advance his own agenda. He promised to help my father but it was all a lie. He’s going to let my father rot in prison unless we stop him.” Sebastian leaned back in his chair and narrowed his eyes slightly. “You are playing a dangerous game, Isabella. My father doesn’t take kindly to betrayal.” “I don't either,” - Isabella retorted, her voice shaking with anger. “You said we'd fight together, but I can't if you keep shutting me out. I need to know whose side you’re on, Sebastian.” Sebastian said nothing for a long time, his gaze steady and intense. Then he stood up and pushed the chair back with a sharp scraping sound that echoed in the silence. He walked over to the window with his back to her, and for a moment Isabella thought he wouldn't answer. But then he spoke, his voice was low and heavy, and she couldn't place or can be placed or quit. "There is more at stake here than you realize, Isabella. My father is not just a man. He’s a force, one that’s been in motion long before you and I were ever involved. Going against him...it’s not just dangerous. It’s suicide.” Isabella experienced a chill along her spine. "So what are you referring to?That we should just do nothing? Let him destroy my father, control our lives?” Sebastian turned to him with a stern expression on his face. “I'm saying we have to be smart about this.Rushing in without knowing the full picture will get us both killed.” “Then tell me the full picture!”Isabella's voice rose, her frustration and fear mixed into a desperate plea. “I need to be informed, Sebastian. If there's anything I should know, it’s your duty to tell me.” Sebastian hesitated, his gaze fixed on hers, as if he was deliberating whether to trust her with the truth. After a minute, he took a big breath and ran his hand through his dark hair. “My father is involved in something much larger than the Blackwood empire. There’s an organization, a network of powerful families and individuals who control everything from behind the scenes. They call themselves The Syndicate.” Isabella’s breath caught in her throat. “The Syndicate? I’ve heard rumors, but I didn’t think...” “It’s real,” Sebastian interrupted, his tone serious. “My father is a key figure within this group. They work covertly, influencing governments, corporations, and even the legal system. They are beyond reproach and will go to any lengths to safeguard their authority.” Isabella sensed his words enveloping her like a heavy, oppressive blanket. "So, that’s the reason behind your fear,do you think we can’t beat them?” Sebastian’s eyes flashed with something like anger. “I’m not afraid, Isabella. Nonetheless, I am not foolish. If we aim to bring down my father, we need to move carefully. One misstep, and The Syndicate will destroy us in an instant.” Isabella’s mind raced, trying to process everything. The risks were greater than she had ever anticipated. It was no longer just about rescuing her father; it had become a battle against a mysterious group that could eliminate them both. "We must find a method to reveal them,”she stated at last, her tone resolute and determined. “If we can bring The Syndicate to light, we can weaken their power and force your father’s hand. There has to be something we can use against them.” Sebastian studied her for a moment, his expression unreadable. Then he nodded slowly. “There’s an individual, a former employee of The Syndicate, who possesses their secrets and has been in hiding for many years. Locating him could provide us with the crucial information we require.” Isabella experienced a brief moment of hope, but it soon gave way to uncertainty. "Do you really believe he’ll assist us?” Sebastian’s lips curved into a bitter smile. “If we can convince him that it’s worth the risk. But finding him won’t be easy. The Syndicate has eyes everywhere.” Isabella's pulse beat as the gravity of their impending task struck her. Nonetheless, there was no way to revert: she had come too far and sacrificed too much. “Then we'll locate him," she declared firmly. "No matter what is required.” Sebastian nodded, his expression serious. “We’ll need to be careful. No one can know what we’re planning—not even Evelyn.” Isabella hesitated, surprised by the request. “Why not Evelyn? She’s my friend—I trust her.” Sebastian’s eyes darkened. “At this moment trust is a big risk. While Evelyn may be your friend, she has also spent a lot of time with my father over the years. We don’t know where her loyalties truly lie.” Isabella felt the urge to argue, but the tone of Sebastian's voice caused her to hesitate. His words possessed a cold logic, characterized by a severity born out of necessity. She had to acknowledge that in such a dangerous circumstances, trust was definitely something unreliable. “Okay," she said reluctantly, though the choice left her feeling uneasy. "But if Evelyn isn’t here with us, then who is?” Sebastian’s gaze was steady. “I only trust one person to assist us with this—someone who has just as much at stake as we do.” Before Isabella could ask who he meant, The dining room door swung open, and Victor Blackwood entered with his usual commanding presence. He wore a smile that radiated an insincere warmth. “Good morning, my dear,” he said to Isabella, his tone dripping with insincere warmth. “I hope you’re adjusting smoothly?” Isabella managed a smile, though her stomach twisted at the sight of him. “Yes, thank you.” Victor turned his attention to Sebastian, his smile tightening. “Son, I'm happy to see you enjoying time with your wonderful wife. It's essential for both of you to recognize the responsibilities that accompany your marriage.” Sebastian’s expression was a mask of indifference. “Of course, Father.” Victor’s eyes flicked between them, a calculating glint in his gaze. “You know, Sebastian, I was just speaking with one of our associates. They mentioned a certain...situation that requires your attention. Something that could have significant consequences for the family if not handled correctly.” Isabella’s heart skipped a beat, and she glanced at Sebastian, who remained calm, his face betraying nothing. “What situation?” Sebastian asked evenly. Victor's smile grew broader, yet it lacked any genuine warmth. "I believe you understand what I mean—it's regarding a particular individual who might be in hiding.” Isabella’s blood ran cold. How could Victor possibly know about the man Sebastian had just mentioned? The man they needed to find? Sebastian's eyes narrowed, a hint of danger flashing across his face. "I'll handle it," he stated sharply. “See that you do,” Victor replied, his voice carrying a subtle threat. We certainly wouldn’t want any...unwelcome surprises, would we? Isabella struggled to keep her composure, but deep down, she felt a surge of panic. How much did Victor know? Was their plan already compromised? “I'm happy to see that you're adapting, Isabella.” Remember, loyalty is everything in this family. Betrayal is not something we tolerate.” The caution in his voice was clear, and Isabella sensed a chilling heaviness enveloping her. Victor was aware of more than he was revealing, and she couldn't shake the sense that they were heading into a trap. Once Victor exited the room, Isabella looked at Sebastian and quietly asked, “He knows, doesn’t he?” Sebastian tightened his jaw, his gaze intense “He suspects. However, that doesn't imply we have run out of choices.” Isabella gasped, feeling her throat dry. "What's our next step?” Sebastian’s gaze was steely, his voice determined. “We move faster. We'll both be in danger if we can't locate that man before my father does.” Isabella felt her heart racing as she fully grasped the seriousness of their situation.
