Chapter Four: Dangerous Allies.

1628 Words
"How much are you willing to risk, Isabella?" As Isabella and Sebastian entered the old, deserted warehouse, the door creaked. The poor lighting allowed enough light to view the dusty floor and rusty metal beams overhead. The silence was disturbing, only their footsteps echoing across the empty room. “Are you sure this is the location where we will meet him?” Isabella whispered, glancing nervously at Sebastian. “Yes,” he replied, his voice low and tense. “He’ll be here. He’s the only one who can help us.” “Help us?” Isabella shot back, her voice betraying her anxiety. “How do we even know we can trust him? What if he’s still loyal to The Syndicate?” Sebastian paused, turning to face her. His expression was more intense than she had ever witnessed, a blend of resolve and something else—something more threatening. “We have no other options, Isabella. If we want to take down my father, we need allies, even if they’re dangerous ones.” Isabella bit her lip, the weight of his words settling heavily on her. She knew he was right. However, it was still hard to accept. They were on the border to entrust their life to a completely stranger, someone who could pass them on. Sebastian softly grasped her hand and murmured, "remain by my side.” “And don’t speak unless I give you permission.” Isabella nodded, her heart pounding as they delved further into the warehouse. Despite being consumed by doubt and apprehension, she forced herself to stay focused. They have come too far and there is no going back now. All she could do was rely on Sebastian and wish for their risk to yield positive results. Out of nowhere, a voice resonated in the darkness, catching both of them off guard.. “You’re late, Blackwood.” Sebastian became alert, his gaze searching the darkness until someone appeared from behind a pile of boxes. The man was tall and slender, with pronounced features and a chilling, analytical stare. His dark hair had hints of gray, and a faint scar running down the side of his face, lending him a threatening look. “Hello, Mr. Hayes," Sebastian said cautiously. "I wasn't aware that you valued punctuality.” Hayes smiled, but his eyes showed no warmth. “When it comes to The Syndicate, being on time is far from your biggest worry. But enough small talk—what do you want, Blackwood? And why did you bring her?” He glanced at Isabella, his eyes filled with doubt. Isabella shivered as Hayes's gaze fixed on her. There was an unsettling quality about him that felt dangerous and unpredictable. “She's my wife," Sebastian stated plainly, his tone indicating that he had no intention of elaborating. "And she is just as engaged in this as I am.” Hayes curved an eyebrow, showing his clear lack of interest. “Is that so? Well, let’s hope she’s more useful than the last woman who got mixed up with The Syndicate.” Isabella’s blood ran cold at the implication, but she forced herself to stay quiet, just as Sebastian had instructed. “We need information,” Sebastian said, getting straight to the point. “About The Syndicate, my father, and the man in hiding.” Hayes’s eyes narrowed, his expression darkening. “You’re playing with fire, Blackwood. Going against The Syndicate is suicide.” “We understand the risks,” Sebastian said calmly. “However, we have no alternative. Victor is orchestrating something significant, and we must intervene before it’s too late.” Hayes examined Sebastian for an extended period, as if judging the truthfulness of his statements. Then he shifted his focus to Isabella, his stare penetrating into hers with a chilling intensity. “And you? How far are you willing to go, Mrs. Blackwood? What level of risk are you prepared to take?” Isabella's breath hitched, yet she remained steadfast. "I'll do anything necessary to rescue my father and put an end to Victor.” Hayes smiled once more, but this time there was a hint of approval in his eyes. “You have a lot of courage, I'll acknowledge that. However, bravery alone won't be sufficient to defeat Victor Blackwood and The Syndicate.” “What will be enough, then?” Sebastian pressed, his voice sharp. Hayes's attitude turned serious as he stepped closer to them and lowered his voice. “The individual you seek is crucial. He was once part of their group but has since turned his back on them. He possesses knowledge capable of dismantling the Syndicate. He's extremely careful because his life is in danger. If you want his help, you must convince him that you can protect him. If you want his assistance, you must assure him of his safety. Otherwise, the information will vanish without a trace.” Isabella felt a sudden surge of optimism, but it was quickly replaced by dread. “Where is he?” Hayes paused, looking around as if to see if anyone was listening in. “He has been staying in an old safe house located on the city's edge, but reaching him won't be straightforward. The Syndicate is always watching, and if they get wind of your actions, they won’t hesitate to take him—and you—out without a moment’s hesitation.” Sebastian nodded with a serious look on his face. "We'll accept that risk.” Hayes glanced at him for a moment before digging into his coat pocket and retrieving a small piece of paper, which he then handed to Sebastian. “That’s the address. But remember—if you get caught, I never helped you. The Syndicate has extensive influence, and I want to avoid becoming their next victim.” Sebastian grabbed the paper, folded it, and slipped it into his pocket.“Understood.” Hayes cast one final prolonged look at them before turning away and vanishing into the shadows, leaving Isabella and Sebastian by themselves in the poorly illuminated warehouse. For a brief moment, they both fell silent, the gravity of their recent discovery hovering above them. Finally, Isabella broke the silence. “Do you believe we can rely on him?" she inquired, her voice hardly louder than a whisper. Sebastian hesitated, his expression unreadable. “Trust can be risky in our world, Isabella. However, at this moment, we have no alternatives.” Isabella nodded, her heart racing with a blend of anxiety and resolve. “Then we need to move fast.” --- They finally arrived at their destination after a long journey - a run-down structure on the city's edge. The windows were covered with boards and the once white paint was peeling and stained. The whole area was unsettlingly silent, a location where no one would realize if anything went wrong. Sebastian took the lead, his hand resting on the firearm hidden under his jacket, while Isabella trailed closely behind, feeling anxious. The surrounding silence was overwhelming, as if the entire world were paused, waiting. Upon arriving at the door, Sebastian knocked three times quickly and then paused to wait. For a long time, there was silence, causing Isabella's heartbeat to quicken. What if Hayes had orchestrated their arrival? What if The Syndicate was already present? Just as she was about to explain her concerns, the door opened slightly, revealing a pair of watchful eyes watching them. "Who are you?" The man hissed, his voice rough and hostile. “Friends,” Sebastian said calmly, but Isabella could feel the tension in his stance. “We’re here to assist you.” The man was obviously ridiculed. "I can manage on my own.” “Yes, you do,” Isabella said, stepping forward despite Sebastian’s warning glance. “We know what The Syndicate is planning. They're after you, and we are your greatest hope for survival.” The man's eyes narrowed, and for a brief moment, Isabella worried he might shut the door on them. However, he paused, glancing back and forth between them, seemingly attempting to measure their honesty. "You have ten seconds to persuade me," he said in a harsh tone. “We know about Victor Blackwood,” she began. “And we know that you have information that could destroy him—and The Syndicate. We don't intend to harm you. Our goal is simply to ensure that Victor cannot carry out his plans.” The man's expression remained unwavering, yet a brief glimpse of something in his eyes hinted at either curiosity or desperation. He cracked the door open wider, exposing his worn-out look, with messy clothing and a face marked by fatigue. "What's your plan?" he inquired, his tone mixed with mistrust. Sebastian stepped forward, his tone firm. “We expose them. We make sure that the world knows what The Syndicate has been doing. However, we require your assistance to accomplish this.” The man watched them closely for a while, his expression hard to read. Finally, he exhaled deeply and stepped aside to let them in. “I hope you understand the consequences of your choice," he whispered. "Once you begin this, there's no turning back.” Isabella experienced a shiver go down her back as they entered the darkness. The wet refuge felt suffocating, with the walls pressing in and the air heavy with a smell of rot. However, she set her fears aside and concentrated on what needed to be done. "Share all the information you have with us," Sebastian remarked as they got comfortable in the tiny, messy living room. The man acknowledged with a serious look on his face. “It all started years ago, when The Syndicate was just beginning to consolidate its power…”
