What are you willing to sacrifice, Isabella?". ************************************************ The confined, messy living room felt oppressive as Marcus, the name they had found out, sat opposite Isabella and Sebastian. The soft light of a single lamp created pronounced shadows that highlighted the weariness and fatigue marked on Marcus's face. He leaned in, elbows on his knees, speaking in a quiet, rough tone. “Are you curious to know about The Syndicate? Fine. But you’d better be ready for what comes next,” Marcus began, his eyes shifting between them, as if gauging their resolve. “Just tell us what you know,” Sebastian replied, his tone firm but measured. Marcus nodded slowly, almost as if he had come to accept that it was unavoidable. “It began more than ten years ago.Back then, The Syndicate was just a loose network of powerful families and corrupt officials. But Victor...Victor had a vision. He recognized the opportunity to transform it into something much larger, capable of influencing entire governments, economies, and all aspects of society.” A shiver ran down Isabella's spine as she listened, yet she made an effort to remain attentive. “And you were part of it?” Marcus’s eyes hardened. “I was.I engaged in actions that I regret—ones that continue to trouble me. However, once I understood the true nature of The Syndicate, I attempted to leave. That’s when I became a target.” Sebastian leaned in, his expression intense. “Why didn’t they kill you?” “They tried,” Marcus replied, his voice bitter. “But I knew too much. Victor knew that if I disappeared, questions would be asked. Instead, they attempted to control me by giving me bits of information to silence me.However, I have been gathering proof—holding out for the perfect time to reveal the truth about them.” Isabella's heart pounded as she contemplated the meaning of Marcus's statements. “And now that moment has come.” Marcus wavered, his eyes turning toward Isabella. “Maybe. However, if we proceed this way, there's no turning back. The Syndicate will do whatever it takes to safeguard themselves and will pursue all of us.” Sebastian clenched his jaw, his eyes blazing with resolve. "We're standing our ground.” Marcus let out a sigh and ran his hand over his face. "I expected you would respond that way. Before we go on, there's something important I need to discuss with you about your father, Isabella.” Isabella find it difficult to breath especially with the news she just got. “My father? What does he have to do with this?” Marcus looked at her with a mixture of pity and regret. “Your father wasn’t just a victim of The Syndicate’s schemes. He was involved, too—deeply involved. Victor and your father were partners in the early days. They built this empire together.” Isabella felt like the ground had disappeared beneath her. "No, that can't be true.” My father...he would never...” “Isabella,” Marcus interrupted, his voice gentle but firm, “I wish I could tell you otherwise. But the truth is, your father was in just as deep as Victor. As soon as he began to suspect, things started to go downhill. Victor betrayed him, orchestrated a trap, and left him to deal with the consequences alone. But make no mistake, your dad knew exactly what he was getting himself into.” Sebastian gazed at Isabella with concern, but she avoided his eyes. Her mind was turbulent, and her heart beat rapidly. "You're not telling the truth," she whispered softly.. “You have to be.” “I wish I were,” Marcus said quietly. “But I have the proof. Documents, recordings... Your father wasn’t an innocent man, Isabella. He was part of this from the beginning.” Isabella's eyes filled with tears and she shook her head in shock. "No, there must be a mistake”. My father would never do something like this. He’s not a monster.” Marcus leaned back in his chair, his expression somber. “We all make choices, Isabella. Some of us just make worse ones than others.” The room was utterly silent as the weight of Marcus's shocking revelation pressed down on everyone. Isabella was completely shocked and her mind raced with feelings of betrayal, anger, and sorrow. Sebastian finally spoke, his voice soft but resolute. “We need to see the proof.” Marcus nodded and got to his feet, heading over to a small, damaged filing cabinet in the room's corner. He retrieved a bulky, frayed folder and handed it to Sebastian. “All the necessary information is included, but brace yourself; it’s not easy to look at.” Sebastian grabbed the folder, his face serious as he opened it and quickly examined the papers inside. Isabella observed him, feeling a lump in her throat, but she wasn't able to find the courage to look at the documents herself. Finally, Sebastian looked up, his face pale. “He’s telling the truth, Isabella. Your father...he was involved.” Isabella felt her world shatter. The man she had looked up to her whole life and sacrificed everything for turned out to be part of the conspiracy that doomed them all, and the betrayal hurt more than she had expected. "I apologize," Sebastian said quietly, his voice is filled with genuine regret. He turned to her, but she shuddered, unable to carry his touch. Isabella reappeared in the room and walked back and forth, crying uncontrollably."I can't believe this is actually happening.”.” I just...I can’t.” “Isabella”, Marcus gently said, “I know that it's difficult to face, but it's important to know. To dismantle the union, you can settle with the truth about your father. I have to. There’s simply no other option.” Isabella dried her tears as she worked to calm her breathing. “What should we do next?” Sebastian closed the folder, his expression resolute. “We keep moving forward. We use this information to our advantage. Victor might have used your father, but now we can use that connection to bring him down.” Marcus nodded in agreement. “You’re right. We must act quickly. The more time we take, the greater the chance The Syndicate has to erase their traces. It's essential to deliver this evidence to the appropriate people.” “And who are the right hands?” Isabella asked, her voice shaking. “Someone who’s not afraid to go after The Syndicate,” Marcus replied. “There’s a journalist—a woman named Claire Donovan. She has spent years looking into their activities in an effort to reveal their wrongdoings. She is the only one who could potentially succeed in taking them down.” Sebastian’s eyes narrowed. “And where do we find her?” Marcus paused before replying, "She’s been staying under the radar, but I can connect you with her. Just make sure to proceed with caution. The Syndicate has been attempting to shut her down for years. If they learn that you’re collaborating with her, they’ll target you as well.” Isabella inhaled deeply, bracing herself for what lay ahead. “We will locate her and ensure that the world learns the truth.” --- Later that evening, as they got ready to depart from Marcus’s safe house, Isabella was unable to rid herself of the intense feeling of anxiety that weighed heavily in her chest. The discoveries about her father had demolished her previous understanding, leaving her feeling more uncertain about the future than ever before. When they arrived at the door, Marcus stop their progress, his attitude clearly more serious. “Just one last thing,he said, speaking quietly. “There’s something important regarding your father, Isabella, that I left out of those documents.” Isabella froze, her heart skipping a beat. “What do you mean?” Marcus glanced at Sebastian before turning back to Isabella. “Before your father was arrested, he made a deal with Victor—a deal that involved you.” Isabella’s blood ran cold. “What kind of deal?” Marcus hesitated, his gaze intense. “He promised you to Victor in exchange for his freedom. Your marriage to Sebastian was part of that arrangement.” Isabella sensed that everything she relied on had suddenly been taken away. “My father...sold me?” Sebastian took a step closer, his eyes filled with anger. "Why didn't you inform us of this earlier?” "I wasn't sure it would have any impact," Marcus said, his tone remained constant. “But now you know. Your father was willing to sacrifice you to save himself.” Isabella felt her world tilt as the reality hit her hard. Everything—her marriage, her father's failure, and even her own existence—had been controlled from the very beginning. Sebastian placed a hand on her shoulder, his voice soft. “Isabella...” However, she shook her head and took a step back from him.“Don’t. Just...don’t.” Before either of them could speak again, the roar of a car engine starting outside broke the heavy silence. Isabella's heart raced as she understood its implications. “"They’ve discovered our location," Sebastian said emphatically, his expression sharpening as he took out his gun. “We need to move. Now.” Marcus picked up his weapon, his face serious. “There’s an alternate exit, but we need to hurry.” As they hurried to the rear exit, Isabella's thoughts were filled with fear and uncertainty. The sound of footsteps reverberated through the structure, getting nearer with each moment. As they approached the door, it suddenly swung open to expose a group of armed men with cold expressions, ruthless expressions. Isabella felt her breath caught in her throat as she realized the man guiding them was one of Victor's most loyal enforcers.“Going somewhere?” He laughed scornfully, aiming his gun at them.
