Unlikely Love

Chapter 1

-No mom, I really wish to go and start Cooking school at Fort Nainer, why can’t I go? - this is annoying, first they tell me to do whatever I want because that’s what I will do my whole life, now they are telling me that what I want cannot be? What am I supposed to do with that?

-Laura stop arguing with me and understand that we cannot afford for you to move out to Fort Nainer, its too expensive! -

-But Mom, I can work over there and study at the same time, it will not be so difficult-

-It’s not safe that a girl of your age goes and lives alone and specially in that big city, I will not have peace of mind if you go, and you shouldn’t work while you study, you won’t be able to have good notes. Its final, search for another carrier here in Rocol Bay, there is a lot of universities here.

-I don’t like any of the universities that are here, everything is so technical, I want something more creative.

-Then find something else, people don’t always get what they want, you know?

-Ok then, how about this, I can stay for a year and work, save enough money so I can go next school year to Fort Nainer and study to be a Chef, would that make you feel better?

-I will think about it and talk with your dad, I really do not know what to do with you.

-Ok, that is fine for now.

Walking to my room I think that at least I manage to not let go of my idea to be a Chef, I don’t get what’s the big deal with me moving out, I get that she is afraid, and she’s not used to this kind of behavior, but come on, we are living in the 21ft century, its not like I don’t know how to take care of myself, I mean I know that there are a lot of dangers for a 18 year old girl, but I think that I’m not a crazy girl, I always do what I’m supposed to, I have good notes, I work on summer breaks, I do sports, I party sometimes but not as crazy as my friends, I don’t like to drink, so I usually only drink 1 beer the whole night, is good to have all your senses awake when you are at parties.

Rocol Bay it’s a small town it has 5 Universities but to tell you the truth, non offer something different, every where is the same, lawyer, engineer, teacher, and that’s pretty much it. I mean it’s not bad to live here, all my friends are here, I am known, and people look after me, I love to go shopping at the next town, Pierre Bay, that has all the best stores, I love the food, but it’s not what I want for me, I want more of life, I will like to see other cities, travel and be someone, at least realize that I can be someone better! I wish my mom would understand me, but we will see tomorrow…

The next morning, I wake up earlier to start to look for a job, I need to find something good so I can save enough money, I shouldn’t be so difficult, I just finished college and I’m now a Computer Technician. I get myself in one of my best outfits and go to have breakfast with my mom and sister, my dad as always is already at work. I check on the job search web page and start to apply to have an interview in one of the best restaurants in the city, it doesn’t hurt to try for something that I like, I am willing to start from the bottom I apply as a computer technician and assistant at other places. I manage to get the interviews in the afternoon, so I go and give the best of me.

Later when I got back home my mom is already serving dinner, and I’m excited about these interviews so I tell her.

-How was your day darling?

-It was great mom, I did 3 interviews, but one is for a restaurant! I really hope to get that job, but I must tell you is not a big position, it’s as a waiter, but they told me that if I have any interest in the kitchen I can start with little things.

-I don’t think that that is an excellent job, you know you are good with computers, why don’t you stick with that, I really hope that you get one of the other jobs.

-Mom but if I want to be a chef is better to know every aspect of a restaurant, and that includes even the guy who cleans the dishes, I am putting all my faith in that job.

-But it is not…

She was interrupted by the phone; my sister gets up and go to pick up the home line.

-Laura it’s for you…

I run to the phone

-Hello?

-Yes, hello, is this Ms. Laura Rios?

-Yes, I am.

-This is Mr. Rodriguez from Grand Rio restaurant, I’m happy to announce you that you got the job, please be here tomorrow at 11 o’clock and bring your documents with you so we can start with the paperwork as soon as possible.

-Thank you so much for the opportunity, Mr. Rodriguez.

-Congratulations and I will see you tomorrow morning, have a great day Ms. Rios.

I hang up and turn around just to see the expectation in my mom’s face.

-Eh… It was from the restaurant; I got the job.

-Mmmh… Let us talk, come, and sit with me.

-Ok…

-I found this flyer of the new University, it has some different curriculum from the other ones, I think that instead of working you can go and study there, so you will not have to work.

-Mom but I don’t like any of these careers and I already pass the entry dates for universities.

-Look, these are 2 years program, and they start later then the other universities, they will have an introductory meeting tomorrow morning, why don’t you go?

-But what about the job? I already told them that I will be there.

-Just do me that favor, check it out, if you do not like it then at 11 you go to take the job, ok?

-I guess, But I cannot promise that I will get in.

-Ok, I just want you to check all the opportunities that you have in hand.

Since it’s just seven in the afternoon I went to my soccer practice, it’s just a few blocks away from my house, and thanked God that Sarah was there, she is my best friend and I know that she has my back as well as I have hers. We start to play and forget about everything; I just want to relax.

As soon as we finished, she sits next to me and stared at me.

Sarah-Ok, tell me what happened?

-How do you know?

-Come on! I known you since we where 6 years old, I know when you are upset, so tell me.

-My mom didn’t let me go to Fort Nainer, she wants me to study here for 2 years at the new University and then if I still want to go, she will let me.

-I still think you should come to study at my university, come on girl! You had a very good score at the test, you even got to be in the program that you are best at, we will be in the soccer team together, plus we need a good scorer as you, it will be great!

-You know that I don’t like the programs that this university has to offer, and I do not want to follow my sister steps, I do enjoy opening a computer and do my experiments, but I don’t see me doing that all my life, I mean it’s fine, but it is not me.

-Then what do you want to do? Your mom is not gonna let you go to Fort Nainer at this age, you already knew that.

-I know, I went for a job interview in a restaurant and got the job, but my mom insists in me instead of work go to this university, she says “just for 2 years”.

-Well, is not that bad, think about it, she promised that after these 2 years you can go to Fort Nainer and start Cooking school, so what do you have to lose, plus I will get to have you 2 more years!

-I guess so, I will go tomorrow and check the university, I will make my decision tomorrow.

-Ok then let’s go to eat, I am starving!
