The Past Knocks Twice

It had been a week since Ethan’s return, and everything between them felt new — like a story quietly unfolding in the pages of their lives. He came to the café every day again, sometimes helping her clean up after hours, sometimes just sitting there while she talked about her dreams. He listened — really listened — and in those moments, Amara forgot what it felt like to be alone. They laughed more now. He’d tease her about her obsession with chocolate muffins, and she’d mock his serious face whenever he focused too hard on his sketches. It felt easy — too easy. Like happiness had finally decided to stay. But happiness, Amara knew, had a way of testing you. That evening, as they stood outside the café under the fading orange sky, Ethan turned to her. “You’ve made this place feel like home,” he said quietly. She smiled shyly. “Maybe it already was. You just needed someone to remind you.” He chuckled softly, his eyes warm. “You always know what to say.” Amara’s breath hitched when he reached out and tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. The touch was soft, fleeting, but it lingered in her chest long after. He hesitated. “Amara, I—” Before he could finish, a voice interrupted them. “Ethan?” They both turned. Standing a few feet away was a woman — elegant, confident, and familiar in a way that made Amara’s stomach twist. Ethan froze. “Clara?” The world seemed to tilt. For a moment, none of them spoke. The name echoed in Amara’s mind — Clara. The woman from his past. The one who’d left him. Clara took a hesitant step forward. “I didn’t expect to see you here,” she said softly. “I… I’ve been trying to reach you.” Amara looked at Ethan, searching his face for a sign — anger, sadness, anything. But all she saw was shock. “I think I should go,” Amara whispered, stepping back. Ethan turned quickly. “Amara, wait—” But she was already walking away, her heart pounding, her chest tight. The night air felt cold against her skin as tears stung her eyes. She didn’t want to cry. She didn’t want to care this much. But she did. Because in that single moment, she realized something terrifying — she was already in love with him.
