The Call

Hunters Pov

I hate watching TV but Soldier wanted to be near Haley. To be completely honest, I didn't mind being this close to her either. We sat in silence while we watched the movie. I felt at ease around her and I wondered if that was the mate bond or if it was just her presence. I glanced at her quickly and her eyes were glued to the TV. I instantly wanted to reach out for her and pull her into my lap, but I knew I had to take this very slowly.

The movie comes to an end and Zach asks if we want to watch something else, but we are interrupted by my cell ringing.

I checked to see Zain's number flash across the screen. Zain is one of the gods in charge of protecting all the different species, so I knew something was needed from me.

I swiped the phone.

"Hello, Zain."

"Hunter, we have a problem in New York."

"What's the address and what exactly is the problem?"

" We have a scared human girl that was mated to an Alpha but she rejected him."

All of my worries came crashing in on me all at once. What if Haley rejects me?

I sighed, "I'll be there as soon as possible."

I mind link Zach with the details.

Nia knows what I do and she hates it, but it does keep the piece between the species. It also keeps us all safe from being exposed.

"We will be late, Sis." I said as I stood to get my jacket, ignoring Haley. I knew if I looked at her I wouldn't want to leave and I had to.

Once out of earshot, I called the airport and was able to get a round-trip flight. Eight pm flight to New York and a midnight flight back home. That will give me four hours to figure out how to handle this situation.

"We are leaving in an hour." I said to Zach.

I could have run there but flying would be a little faster and the faster I get the problem taken care of, the faster I can get back to my mate.

Zach and I make our way out of the house and head toward the airport. I always dread what sometimes needs to be done. If I can't get this resolved, I will have to kill this human and probably her Alpha mate.

Haleys Pov

I was board without the guys. I was actually having a nice time this weekend. I am definitely attracted to Hunter. I'm dying to know if he ran out to be with someone, but I don't want Nia getting any ideas because she will not let me live this down.

Then I remember the gift on the bed, just as I was about to go upstairs to see what it was, Nia handed me a drink.

"The boys are out and we have full access to the bar."

I smiled and took a sip. Just as I thought, margarita.

"So what are we drinking too?"

"Family." Nia said and winked at me, while turning on her blue-tooth speaker and selecting a song.

We spent the rest of the night drinking and laughing. She told me stories about how Hunter always protected her when she was small and that he was more like a dad to her than a brother. I could tell she loved him very much and that just made him even more attractive. I have always wanted a man to be protective and loving towards me.

I had four or five drinks in me and I was feeling pretty drunk, thinking I should go to bed. Nia looked like she hadn't even had a drink. I have always wondered how, but she never appears drunk, and she drinks like a damn fish.

"How do you do that?" I asked my words, slurring just a little.

"What?' Nia said.

"I am drunk as s**t and you aren't even fazed."

She laughed and said "I have a higher tolerance than you."

I remembered the box again and blurted out. "Lets go see what is in the box."

"What box?" Nia said. My hand went to my mouth in an effort not to say anything further. That's when she started tickling me. She knows exactly how to get me to spill the beans. "I think Hunter left me something earlier."

Nia did not look surprised at all. I squinted my eyes at her as if to ask the question. What do you know?

She smiled her bitchy smile at me. I jumped up to run upstairs with her right on my heels. I snatched the box off the bed and read the card.

So it is from Hunter. I said with shaky hands and now butterflies in my stomach. I slowly opened the box to find a beautiful silver necklace with a blood red ruby and silk shoulder wrap to match my dress.

I turned with caution to look at Nia and all I found was her smiling at me, with her brows raised.

I quickly came back to reality when I realized that Hunter was just being nice, probably to make up for the rest of his family hating me. Nia probably told him how they all disliked me and what better way to make me think I'm part of her family than to get her

brother to give me gifts. "Thanks Nia." I said as I realized that Hunter did it for Nia rather than what I thought.

"Dont thank me I had nothing to do with this." She grabbed the wrap and put it around my shoulders.

"You do realize Hunter may just like you, right?" Nia asked.

I smiled a small smile. "You and I both know that is not true. I'm sure he is out with a woman as we speak."

"Look around, Haley. Do you see any other woman here or any evidence of another woman here other than me? He also gave you his room. He doesn't do that."

Nia walked over to the closet and opened it. Only men's clothes in one and a few things of mine in the other.

"Men like Hunter can have any woman they want." I said, wondering if she could be right. Wanting her to be right.

"I know my brother Haley. He isn't like that." Nia said.

I pulled the wrap off of my shoulders and placed it back in the box, deciding that I was drunk and needed sleep. Nia excused herself and I got ready for bed. I hoped I wouldn't dream of him but I knew I would.

I drunkenly climb into Hunters bed. his pillow is soft and it smells like him. I take a deep breath and savor it for a minute before sleep takes me.
