After that, she worked from home on Monday to do some personal things. Like mailing off her boxes and buying a new phone that wouldn’t be traced. Sense she will be leaving the phone from her husband behind. She cleaned up the apartment as well. Making sure there wasn't any perishable food or anything going to waste. She didn’t know if her soon to be ex would keep the condo or sell it. But she wanted to make sure she wouldn’t be blamed for anything wrong with it either.
So far with the new phone she called Ray to inform her of a new number and her lawyer that her old phone won't be leaving with her. He understood her safeguards about not only the phone but leaving the city as soon as she signed on her end. Carol also called up Mr. Jones to inform him of what her plans were and to also give him her new number. She implored that he not give this number to anyone else. She didn’t want anyone besides her lawyers to call her.
The week progressed slowly for Carol after that. James refused to talk to her unless necessary for her stunt at the wake. Carol didn’t mind or care. She finished all her work for the next secretary and was busy typing up a list of things the new person would need to know. The whole do’s and don’ts of the job along with reminders such as what coffee he will drink and from where. Where he will get his dry cleaning done and other mundane things. Especially since she will be leaving the city, she made sure to write down addresses, phone numbers and kept a stash of phones in a drawer just in case he wants to be violent. She was almost done with her list of things for the new secretary when her phone rang.
Absent-mindedly she answered the phone without seeing the number. “Mrs. Robington speaking, how can I help you?”
Her lawyer answered “the papers are ready maam.”
Carol blinked and looked at the phone and noticed the lawyer's number. She composed herself and replied “that is wonderful to hear. I will leave work early and come sign them. Are you busy?”
He replied that he wasn’t and he would be seeing her soon. Carol printed her list off and set them on the desk in front of her keyboard. She made sure everything was off and nothing of hers was left behind. Because she wasn’t coming back. The papers were a day early, but she didn’t care. It meant she could get a little heads up on her trip. She made sure the few documents she would add to the divorce was in her bag.
On her way down to her car she drove in today, she called Ray up. “Hey Precious, everything is good to go here. Things will be shipped to you until my little retreat is done. Is your end ready for me?”
Ray was excited for her best friend. “Yes Sweetie, everything is ready. You need to stop by the offices before heading to the retreat. I heard back from the boys. They said they do indeed know what you want and it will be done by the time you travel out there. How do these people know you so well? You said you lived out there with your grandma until she passed when you were 10ish. Then your parents moved to a place closer to a military base.”
Carol smiled but replied. “Precious, my dad retired from the military when I was 8ish and we moved out there a year after. A small place like that it is hard to forget anyone. I made an impression, even as a child. I have interesting news for you once I see you. But for now they know what I want and why. It helps that the brother who works mines is also out there. He and I may not talk right now, but he knows my preferences. Besides, you probably sent out things to add to it, knowing you like I do.”
Which made Ray laugh. They chatted a little more but then Carol had to hang up because she needed to drive.
Carol was almost bouncing with excitement. This chapter of her life is almost over and then she can make the slow trek home. Her roots and where half of her heritage is. Her backpack was ready and she was ready. At this point she just wants to be home. She made her way to her lawyer’s office. She greeted him politely and asked if he had the papers. He produced them then and there.
She sat down to read over them. He wanted to insist she get more than her earnings. At least spousal support. But she was adamant about leaving and not having any ties to the Robingtons. So Carol divulged about the will and what she would be inheriting. Which made her lawyer impressed but also made him shut up. Inherited properties could not be shared. Especially how the late Mrs. Robington wrote her will and the expectations.
Carol will be fine and wouldn’t need to keep in touch with any of them. Just the lawyer who is taking care of the will and trust funds Mrs. Robington put together. Mr. Jones was her lawyer and not the family's lawyer. Which sounds like he might end up her lawyer to help field off the Robingtons family lawyer.
She signed the document once she was satisfied with it and added the old NDA along with her updated one, the letter to the very top and handed it all over to her lawyer. She watched him put it in a big envelope and shook his hand. Once she was done there she headed over to the condo to drop off everything she wasn’t taking and change into more comfortable clothes.
She looked around the area one last time to make sure everything was clean and undisturbed. Then walked out the door with her backpack of things. She called a cab to pick her up while on the way up to the apartment. So by the time she came back downstairs it was waiting for her. She climbed in and told the driver the address for the Lucky Frog.
On the way she made sure they weren’t being followed. It would be her luck to be followed the one day she was leaving this city. But she didn’t find anyone following her. About 30 minutes later they pulled up into the parking lot of the little diner. She paid him and made her way inside.
She sat at the counter and ordered a hot tea and a slice of apple pie. She people watched, looking innocent but was really making sure she knew no one and finding the waitress with the tattoo her brother told her about. So far she has n't seen anyone she knew and nothing looked odd. But she finally found the waitress her brother Travis told her about. She was serving some construction workers their breakfast when her inner forearm was on display. The angel wings with the halo. Once the waitress was closer Carol said, “Miss, do you have a minute to chat with me?”
The woman looked at Carol and then slipped behind the counter and refilled napkin dispensers. “The name is Sweets. What can I get you little missy?”
The waitress was about her height, kind of had a belly. But she could have been pregnant. She was slightly older than Carol was as well. Carol knew better than to ask though, she had wavy blondish hair and blue eyes. Your typical all American girl vibe coming from her.
Carol blinked at her about her name though. “Is that your true government name or is it your road name?”
Which made Sweets stop, blink and then smile at Carol. “Not many people know that I am the ol’ lady of a club. How did you know? BTW it is my road name. But I like it better than my government one.”
Carol believes that her brother did good knowing so many different people and teaching her about the ideas and beliefs of those who live about the open road. She responded, “I didn’t know you were an old lady, but I have a brother who has your same tattoo. He told me to find you.”
Again she made Sweets stop what she was doing and look up at her. She looked real good at Carol and said, “Who is your brother and why did he send you to me?”
Carol looked around to make sure they weren’t attracting any attention. Then explained a little, after all she barely knew Sweets and if she could help or not. “My brother's name is Travis, he works as a trucker. Him traveling the country has made him known to all kinds of people. But I just signed divorce papers with a man I do not want to see again and he has the money and resources to track me down if I left via bus/plane or ship. He doesn’t know and I do not want him to know that I am leaving with his child in me. It would be better for me to be a single mom than to raise this child anywhere near him or his family. Travis said you could point me in the correct direction or something to get me to Seattle.”
Now Sweets was interested. She rested her hand on her own belly, looked around and gave Carol another slice of pie while making a cup of tea for herself. Then started to talk, “Well then, if Travis sent you then I know all is well. He probably didn’t tell you much except where to go and what to look for, correct?” Carol only nodded and kept listening.
