I froze. s**t. I hope he didn’t see me come out of the lair. I grabbed a random book and adjusted myself on the couch so I was in a comfortable relaxing position. I also flipped to a random page like I was reading.
“I’ve been here all the while, reading.” I say as smoothly as I could without breaking eye contact. He lowered his body into a squat so we were at eye level, staring at me with a piercing gaze. My heart thumped in my chest. Please don’t find out I’m lying. Why am I such a terrible liar? You would think I would have picked up the skill by now since I stayed with that snake in disguise, my stepmother.
