Elena’s POV
Shit! I was pregnant. It was just one night. But again, I was in my heat. That was so strange. I usually had warnings for it but none of the symptoms came. Not even the annoying swollen boobs. I grit my teeth as the last of the heat ends. It was worse than the human period.
I had already noticed a bulge. Werewolf pregnancies were quick, lasting only for three months. Lucas would not understand and I don’t want my baby in those kinds of situations. I know it’s a bit premature to call it that, but it’s still mine. I pack some basic necessities, then I leave the lonely mansion Lucas abandoned me at.
I wish I could apologize to him. He was still my husband, alpha, and mate, fake or not. The mansion was a bit far from the main packhouse but I could handle it. I move away from the pack so no one would notice me and instead go to the edge of the pack-lands. I changed to my werewolf form and it was the most painful bone-breaking I had ever had. My whole body hurt like hell and I had to bite down on the bag I was carrying so I wouldn’t scream out loud. Tears blurred my vision but I pushed on anyway. I needed to for my child.
Finally, it was done. I surveyed my surroundings. I was surrounded by greenery for miles and miles. I would have to go through here to another city. There, at least, I wouldn’t have to bother about Lucas, hopefully. I adjust the bag in my mouth and prepare to run.
I ran until I got to a clearing where I paused to eat a few of the peanut butter and jelly sandwiches I packed. I am so hungry. I have never been this hungry in my entire life. I continue until I begin to see the outline of the other city. It’s beautiful. I sit with my paws around my belly and appreciate the view of the ethereal sun setting in the distance.
Soon, I fell asleep in a cave I had found. I sleep in my wolf form as I am not willing to try bone-breaking until it’s absolutely necessary. I woke up to pounding footsteps. Holy moon goddess, save me, please. I instinctively wrap my paws around my belly. I heard a loud growling. Oh no. Of course, I had to enter the one cave that belonged to a bear.
She charges towards me and I try to take a fighting stance but my body is too tired from all the running. I crumble back into a kneeling position, instead assuming a protective stance by covering my belly.
I expected an attack but was surprised when she sat down and started playing with my fur. I looked up, sighing with relief. She put a protective paw on my belly. She could sense I was pregnant, I guess.
Throughout the rest of the night, she watched me sleep. At first,it was unsettling, but I concluded it was just a mother’s instincts and slept better.
The next morning, I awoke to a dead rabbit in front of me. She must have hunted for me. Frankly, I had never eaten raw meat before. The packs were not like that. We were mostly in our human form and so ate mostly human food. She nudged it in front of me and although I tried protesting in the mind of my wolf, we were both soon happily chewing on the bloodied meat. It really wasn’t so bad.
She showed me the easiest way out of the forest and I soon had to change again, back to my human form. It wasn’t so easy, but it wasn’t as hard as the first time. I changed into what I had brought along, a summery dress and sandals.
Oh my! My bulge had increased a lot. I know our pregnancies are fast but this is a lot. I trekked the few miles of road, praying that someone would find me in this sweltering heat. I wish we could talk to bears. She was so nice.
Soon enough, a human pulled over his car.
“Hello, miss. What are you doing out here in the heat?” He asked after looking at me through the open car window. What to say?
“Well, my car broke down about a few miles back.” I replied, hoping he would not see through my lie. He nodded emphatically and opened the door.
“Get in. I suppose I could give you a lift. Where are you headed to?” He asks as he chews his tobacco. Blergh! That stuff tastes horrible. My stepmother took it regularly and one time I took a little. I would have been better at chewing my own hair.
“Actually, I was looking for a job. You see, my father abandoned me and my family disowned me, too. I have nowhere to stay right now.” Just for special effects, I shed a few drops of tears. My stepmother always said if you need a man to do something, cry. Turns out she was right. He pats my knee sympathetically.
“I’m sorry to hear that. I know a place you could work at. I’ll recommend it to you.” I am filled with relief. Anything to keep my baby safe.
The majority of the drive to the town was filled with horrible and loud music and, even worse, the man’s singing. I have never heard anything as horrible.
‘Girl, don’t you think you’re forgetting something?’ My wolf asked. She has been on a constant high since eating the rabbit.
‘I’m not.’ I replied in my head.
’His name, you dumbass!” She replies, exasperated. I could tell she was annoyed. I keep doing this, forgetting to ask names. I blame my poor social upbringing.
“I’m Elena. What’s your name?” I turned to him and asked, interrupting his horrible singing for a bit.
“Jeff.” He says and goes on to sing a song about pain making someone a believer. The music is weird.
I fell asleep momentarily and when I woke up, the truck had stopped moving. I could see the outline of the city’s buildings.
“Why did we stop?” I asked, he probably just wanted to pee. Another thing I read about humans was that they had a really weak bladder.
“We’ll just have some food and be on our way.” He replies, stepping out of the truck. I was hungry -with this baby, I am always hungry- but the thought of eating his food did not appeal to me.
“No, thanks. I’m not hungry.” I replied and continued staring at the human buildings, still too distant for my liking.
“You could have some fresh air, you know?” That sounded appealing. The truck smelled like chewing tobacco and I was surprised I hadn’t puked yet. I jumped out of the truck and sit-walked for a bit. I returned, to keep Jeff company as he wolfed down his tacos. It was the least I could do.
“So where are you going?” I asked, sitting beside him in the trunk of the car.
“San Diego. You’ll get a job at Applebee’s nearby. As for where to stay, you could just crash there until you can afford somewhere. I would take you in but my wife would hear none of it.” He chuckles lightly as he wipes his fingers on a napkin.
I stand up to leave but he grabs my arm.
“You still have to repay me somehow for taking you this far.” Something felt wrong. Something felt really wrong.
“Well, I could pay for your fuel after my first paycheck.” I replied, trying to remove my hand from his grasp. My stepmother was wrong for the first time. Humans were strong and not as weak as she said them to be.
“No, sweet thing. You can pay me another way.” He replies and starts pulling off the hands of my dress. Freaking bastard. This is how it is going to be, isn’t it?
‘Girl, I’ll handle this one just fine.’ My wolf growled angrily and she tried to come out, but I know I couldn’t change completely to her during the pregnancy. Instead, my claws lengthened and, with my wolf taking most of the control, we slashed his cheek. HE looked at my golden eyes and lengthened claws and let out a girlish scream. He started to run away. My wolf yipped in delight and began the chase. In just two steps, we had caught him and my wolf was going full-on ballistic on him. She first slit his throat then proceeded to rip him apart, limb for limb. She was about to eat him, but I stopped her.
Absolutely not. We threw him as far into the forest as we could with our combined strengths. I hope the bear finds him and finishes him off. I clean myself up with the remaining water in the truck and close it.
I enter the truck and look at the whole machinery. It can’t be that hard. I’ve seen a lot of drivers use it. It’s no big deal. That’s exactly what I thought until I almost crashed into a tree.
‘Girl! Are you trying to kill us?’ If you don’t know by now, that’s my wolf screaming in my ear. It took me a while to figure out the whole thing. I’m kidding, I found an unopened manual on how to use the car. Let’s just say that I eventually left my sunset.
On the drive in wonderful peace and quiet, a box thingy kept on playing a weird human tune and lighting up. It said ‘call from Honey’. I tapped the button and kept it back. I had seen this thing before with Alpha Lucas.
I ask for directions to Applebee’s and I get there after getting lost a few times. This new city is big with a lot of roads. I slept in the truck overnight, deciding to start the job tomorrow. I got there by 7am and talked to their manager who, thankfully, is a female and seemed nice. She offered me a job as a waitress. At least that, I can handle.
I was put through orientation and did quite well. The supervisor was impressed. If only he knew I had served the worst kind of person. After a while on my feet, I returned to the kitchen to get an order. Suddenly, I felt a hot liquid dripping down my legs. I looked down to see a red liquid. Blood.
I used my hand to try to wipe away the blood a bit, but it kept coming faster and I was getting dizzy.
“Help.” I managed to whimper out before everything turned dark.
