Chapter 1

Luna POV It's fall, and the whole town is abuzz. There is to be a grand ball and 'choosing' tomorrow night. It is the birthday of Tristan Smith, the alphas son. To add even more excitement to the event, our alpha invited the king. It seems that King Eric accepted the invitation and is set to arrive in town today. King Eric is said to be one of the most handsome men in the nation. I have no interest in such affairs. My only concern, is to not be chosen by Tristan. Tristan is soon to be the new alpha of the pack; as such he needs a Luna. It is rumored that only ten ladies were chosen for this event. Two from our pack, and the rest from neighboring packs. This is so that Tristan can pick out a bride and future Luna. By a stroke of bad luck, a letter arrived in the mail for me. I was crushed when I saw the contents. It's not an option, it's an order. I shake myself out of my thoughts and continue packing. When I seal the last box I hear my phone ding. (Rosa) Luna, can we talk? Please? (Me) About what? (Rosa) You. You keep avoiding me, and you won't answer my texts. (Me) I just don't want to feel pressured about being excited about the ball again. (Rosa) Okay, okay. I won't do that. Let's meet up to go pick our dresses up, okay? I miss you and I REALLY need to talk to you! (Me) Okay fine! I'll see you at the boutique in 15. (Rosa) Great, see you soon. I groan internally as I rolled out of bed. I do a quick check in the mirror to make sure I look decent. I look rough but presentable. I walk out to my car and it's freezing. I wish I had worn a jacket now. I turn on my car and crank the heat all the way up. My phone buzzes again. This time it's from my mom. Hey sweetie, remember to pick up your dress. You need to look your absolute best tomorrow night! If you can make it through the first night of selection. That is all your father and I want. Love you, see you tonight. I don't bother replying. They never listen anyway. I back out of the driveway and head towards the boutique to meet Rosa. When I get there, the boutique is ridiculously crowded. I see Rosa in the window waving at me to come in. I shove my way through the crowd and manage to get inside. "Why is it so crowded here?" Rosa looks at me like I'm crazy for asking. "Uhm girl, do you not read the news?" I stare blankly at her. Rosa sighs "The King is here! Everyone is saying he is super hot!" She says excitedly I sigh "Okay, so can we just pick up our dresses? So we can get out of here as quickly as possible and get some food?" Rosa laughs. "Hi, we're here to pick up our dresses," I say to the cashier. The cashier scoffs. "Look lady, we all know you want to see the King. Everyone does." I was about to unleash my fury, but Rosa stepped in. "Ma'am I'm not sure if you are aware, but my father owns this building. Give us our dresses and we'll be on our way." Her voice is stern. That means she's serious. "Oh good heavens! Ms. Rosa, you simply must tell us when you are coming!" The manager came running at us, "Trisha, you cannot treat our CEO's daughter like that! Not to mention her friend here is the chairman's daughter." Trisha went white in the face. She realized she had f****d up. It feels like a scene straight out of a Korean drama. All that's missing is the handsome guy miraculously appearing and helping save the day. "Sir, there really is no need for all this fuss. We just want our dresses, please." I say to try and hurry things along. The manager bows and leaves to get our dresses. I turn to Rosa, "Let's go get some food after this. I'm starving, let's get some Chinese take out and go to my house." Rosa looked at me with bright eyes "A sleepover! We haven't done that in SO long!" She clings onto me "I can't believe we turn eighteen tomorrow. At least we can celebrate together. Too bad we have to share it with Tristan too." I scoff, "As if it's actually sharing. His birthday is next week. Alpha Cameron is anxious for him to choose a bride. I hope I lose." I stretched my arms out and hit something behind me. I turn around to see what I hit. Behind me is an incredibly handsome man. Strong jawline, nice chin, golden eyes, and black hair that was cut short. He was tan, but not too tan. You could see his muscles through his white dress shirt. Which was paired with black dress pants and men's dress shoes. I have never seen this man in our pack before. He must be visiting for the ball. "Now why wouldn't you want to be the future Luna of the pack?" This man looked at me quizzically. "Well, some of us want to go to college. Besides, my name is Luna. Can you imagine? Luna Luna Moon" I looked at Rosa and she burst out laughing. "Girl, you're funny. Here comes Lewis with our dresses." Finally, the manager came with our dresses. "I apologize greatly for your inconveniences." He bowed to us. "Lewis, it's okay. Take care of my fathers store for me will ya?" As we leave the store, I hear the man behind us say his name "Eric Colson, I'm here to pick my suit for tomorrow's event." Eric Colson, our king and ruler of the nation. We meet up at the restaurant and order our food. We decided on fast food since we don't usually like going to the fancy restaurants. I look at Rosa, who always looks so well put together. She is beautiful. She is dark-skinned, with brown hair, and beautiful brown eyes. Her family moved here from Africa when she was 10. Rosa's father built an empire of boutiques from the ground up. He never flaunts his wealth or forgets where he started. "Sooooo King Eric was totally checking you out," Rosa comments. "As if, trust me he's going to want someone like Samantha. Not a freak like me." I say nonchalantly. I know that I will never get chosen. No male wolf has ever been impressed by my white hair and pale skin. Not to mention, I don't tan. My hair also does not take hair dye. It has been white my entire life. "You are NOT a freak. Seriously, stop calling yourself that. It's demeaning, besides we all have someone we are destined for." Rosa has always been the voice of reason in my head. That is why she is my best friend. Suddenly a presence appeared at our table. "Hello ladies, what are we talking about here?" That presence just so happened to be King Eric. Yay. I have barely met the man and yet his entire being annoys me. Rosa however, takes this as the perfect opportunity to play matchmaker. "We were just talking about how Luna has zero self esteem. She believes that she has no destined person." Rosa smirks at me like she's won the battle. "If we're being technical, no one has a destined person anymore. The tradition of fated mates was done away with hundreds of years ago. When the bonds suddenly broke." I see King Eric visibly flinch at my words. Rosa is not thrilled with my argument. So I vaguely comment on the décor of the restaurant. It's a Taco Bell, so nothing too special. "So let me ask you this," King Eric turns to me. "If there was someone who was interested in you right now, and they confessed. What would you say?" I stared blankly, because honestly, what would I say? "I don't know King Eric, I really don't know. I wish I had the confidence to accept such a confession. However, I would most likely run away." I turned away from him so as to not show my emotions. He grabs my chin and gently turns my head towards his. He looks me in the eyes. "Luna Moon, you are mine. I like you. You cannot run away. I will find you no matter where you go." My heart fluttered a little at his words. I didn't have time to respond before he got up and left. Rosa was sitting there in shock at what had just transpired. "Omg girl! Luna, I told you he was eyeing you." I blush and change the subject. "So what was so important that you wanted to meet up?" Rosa's demeanor changed to serious. "Oh well, it's nothing really. I just wanted to let you know I overheard that Tristan is going to pick Samantha. So there's no reason for you to panic." I sighed a breath of relief. I thought she was going to say that her parents were divorcing. Or something wild like that. My dings with a text from my mom. Hey sweetie, I heard you had trouble at the boutique. Don't worry, your dad has taken care of everything. I sigh heavily, that means that girl was fired. Everyone has bad days. I don't understand why my parents are like this. Just because we are rich doesn't mean we have to be assholes. "I have to go Rosa, my parents fired that girl." Rosa rolled her eyes and sighed. She knew what my parents were like. "I'm sorry Luna, when this ball is over we can run away." She smiled at me. We got up and headed out the door. Rosa gave me a big hug. I got in my car and drove home. I saw my father's lackeys sitting at Taco Bell. He and my mom were watching us. Which means they now know about King Eric. Which also means I am in deep trouble. I walk into the house mentally prepared for the ass-chewing I'm about to get. My parents are sitting on the couch waiting for me. "So Luna, who was that man you were with today? Don't play dumb. We know that you know you were followed." I groan internally. "Nobody important. Just a friend." My father scoffs. I know he doesn't believe me. I don't believe myself either. I literally just met the man 4 hours ago. He told me I was his. "Luna Moon! Don't you know that this could ruin your chances with Tristan?" Dad is rather angry at this point. "Dad, Mom, I don't care about being chosen. There are about twenty other girls up for the position of 'Luna'. Not to mention, literally everyone knows that Tristan plans on choosing Samantha. The blonde-headed wonder." I got up to walk away, but it appeared my mother has to have the last word. "You can't be with the King, Luna. You've only known him a few hours. All you are to him is a pretty girl. Don't throw your future away." It was more a warning than anything. I flop onto my bed once in my room. I let sleep overtake me. I pray to the moon goddess I won't have nightmares tonight. Just one night please, I want to sleep.
