Chapter 32 – Secrets That Refuse to Die
The storm raged across the city as Ethan's Rolls-Royce sped toward Carter Group Headquarters.
Rain lashed against the windows, while flashes of lightning illuminated the empty streets.
Inside the car, Ethan remained silent.
His thoughts lingered on the old photograph.
The younger version of himself smiling beside Victor Hayes.
Two ambitious young entrepreneurs.
Two friends.
Now...
Two enemies.
Daniel glanced at him from the front passenger seat.
"You've barely spoken."
Ethan kept his eyes on the rain outside.
"I'm remembering things I'd rather forget."
---
Minutes later, the car pulled into the underground parking garage.
Daniel and two security officers followed Ethan into the executive elevator.
The moment the doors opened, the atmosphere felt different.
The entire cybersecurity department was still working despite the late hour.
Computer monitors filled the operations room with a blue glow.
Several analysts stood the moment Ethan entered.
"Mr. Carter."
Ethan nodded.
"Show me."
The head analyst projected a series of files onto a large screen.
"At exactly 8:47 p.m., someone attempted another intrusion."
"Were they successful?"
"No, sir."
"Our firewall stopped them."
"So how did they leave a message?"
"They never entered our system."
"They displayed it through an external attack."
The analyst enlarged the image.
Across the screen appeared the same chilling words.
THE PAST ALWAYS COLLECTS ITS DEBT.
Below it...
A strange symbol appeared.
A fiery phoenix.
Ethan stared at it.
His expression slowly changed.
Daniel noticed immediately.
"You recognize it."
Ethan nodded.
"I designed that logo."
The room fell completely silent.
---
Back at Carter Manor...
Olivia couldn't sleep.
She walked onto the balcony wrapped in a light sweater.
The rain had finally stopped.
Only the sound of dripping water echoed through the gardens.
William quietly joined her.
"You couldn't sleep either?"
She smiled softly.
"No."
"I'm worried."
William looked toward the city lights.
"Ethan?"
She nodded.
"He tries so hard to protect everyone."
"But..."
"Who protects him?"
William smiled sadly.
"When Ethan was a boy..."
"He always carried everyone's burdens."
"He believed asking for help was weakness."
Olivia looked down.
"I wish he'd lean on me more."
William placed a gentle hand on her shoulder.
"He already is."
"He just doesn't realize it yet."
---
Across the city...
Inside the underground vault...
Victor Hayes sat alone, staring at another photograph.
This one was older.
It showed three people.
A young Ethan.
A young Victor.
And another man standing between them with an arm around each of their shoulders.
The man's face was warm and full of pride.
Victor whispered quietly,
"You chose him over me."
His voice echoed through the empty room.
"You always chose him."
He slowly turned the photograph over.
Written on the back were the words:
Phoenix Technologies
Founders' Day
Ethan Carter
Victor Hayes
Charles Bennett
Victor's eyes grew cold.
"So many years..."
"...and it still ends with him."
---
Meanwhile...
At Carter Group Headquarters...
Richard Collins hurried into Ethan's office carrying another confidential report.
"You need to see this immediately."
Ethan accepted the file.
Inside was a financial report dating back twelve years.
At the bottom of one page...
A familiar signature appeared.
Charles Bennett
Ethan looked up sharply.
"Where did you find this?"
"It was hidden in our archived records."
Richard hesitated.
"And there's something else."
"What?"
"Charles Bennett died the same week Phoenix Technologies collapsed."
Ethan froze.
Daniel looked between them.
"I've never heard that name before."
Ethan slowly closed the file.
"You wouldn't have."
"Almost no one has."
He looked back at the signature.
His voice became almost a whisper.
"He wasn't just our mentor..."
"He was like family."
Outside the office window...
Lightning flashed across the night sky.
Far away, Victor Hayes looked at the very same storm from his penthouse.
A cold smile spread across his face.
"You're finally remembering, Ethan."
"And once all the memories return..."
"...you'll understand why none of this was ever about Business
Ethan remained seated in his office long after Richard and Daniel had left.
The old financial report lay open on his desk.
At the bottom of the final page was the unmistakable signature of Charles Bennett.
A man Ethan had spent years trying to forget.
Not because he wanted to...
But because remembering always brought pain.
He closed his eyes.
For the first time in years...
The memories came rushing back.
---
Twelve Years Earlier...
Phoenix Technologies occupied a small office on the outskirts of the city.
It wasn't luxurious.
The paint on the walls was beginning to peel.
The computers were secondhand.
The furniture barely matched.
But inside that tiny office...
Dreams were being built.
A younger Ethan worked tirelessly at his desk.
Across the room, Victor laughed while speaking confidently with a client.
Standing proudly between them was Charles Bennett.
A man in his late fifties with kind eyes and silver hair.
He wasn't wealthy.
He wasn't famous.
But to Ethan and Victor...
He was everything.
"You two argue too much," Charles said with a smile.
Victor laughed.
"We're discussing business."
"No," Charles corrected.
"You're discussing whose turn it is to buy lunch."
Ethan smiled.
"He started it."
Victor pointed at him.
"He skipped breakfast again."
Charles shook his head before placing three cups of coffee on the table.
"You'll never build a successful company if you forget to eat."
The three men laughed together.
For a while...
Life had been simple.
---
Back in the present...
Ethan opened his eyes.
A faint smile crossed his face before disappearing just as quickly.
There had been happiness once.
Before everything fell apart.
---
At Carter Manor...
Olivia sat in the library reading one of the children's books from the foundation.
She tried to distract herself.
It wasn't working.
Every few minutes she glanced at her phone.
Still no message from Ethan.
William quietly entered.
"Still awake?"
She nodded.
"I can't stop worrying."
William smiled gently.
"He'll come home."
"I know."
"But something feels different."
William looked into the fireplace.
"I've only seen Ethan carry that expression twice."
"The first time..."
"...was the day Charles Bennett died."
Olivia looked at him in surprise.
"You knew him?"
William nodded sadly.
"He was one of the finest men I've ever met."
"He treated Ethan like a son."
Olivia's curiosity deepened.
"What happened to him?"
William sighed.
"I wish I knew the whole truth."
"But after his death..."
"Ethan and Victor never spoke again."
---
At that same moment...
Victor Hayes poured himself another glass of whiskey.
His assistant entered quietly.
"Sir."
"We've confirmed Ethan found Charles Bennett's records."
Victor smiled.
"Good."
"It means the past is catching up."
The assistant hesitated.
"May I ask something?"
Victor nodded.
"Do you truly believe Ethan betrayed you?"
Victor remained silent for several seconds.
Finally, he answered.
"I don't know anymore."
The assistant looked confused.
"But..."
"I spent twelve years convincing myself he did."
His grip tightened around the glass.
"And now..."
"It doesn't matter whether he did or not."
The room became silent.
"Some wounds remain open for so long..."
"...that revenge becomes the only thing keeping them alive."
---
Just after midnight...
The front door of Carter Manor quietly opened.
Ethan stepped inside.
He looked exhausted.
Olivia immediately hurried downstairs.
"You're home."
He smiled weakly.
"I told you I would be."
She noticed the fatigue in his eyes.
"You haven't eaten, have you?"
He shook his head.
"I forgot."
She smiled softly.
"Come with me."
A few minutes later, they sat alone in the kitchen.
Olivia reheated the dinner Chef Martin had prepared earlier.
She placed the plate in front of Ethan.
"You always remember to take care of everyone else."
She looked into his eyes.
"Tonight..."
"Let me take care of you."
Ethan stared at her quietly.
Then, without warning...
He reached across the table and took her hand.
"Thank you."
She smiled.
"You don't have to thank me."
"I do."
"You remind me..."
"...that not everything from my past was lost."
Olivia gently squeezed his hand.
"Whatever happened back then..."
"You don't have to face it alone anymore."
For a long moment...
Neither of them spoke.
The silence wasn't uncomfortable.
It was comforting.
For the first time in many years...
Ethan allowed himself to believe someone would stay beside him, no matter what the past revealed.
Outside the kitchen window, hidden in the darkness beyond the estate gates...
A lone figure watched the mansion through a camera lens.
The shutter clicked once.
Then again.
The photographs were immediately sent to Victor Hayes.
He looked at the images of Ethan and Olivia sitting together in the warm kitchen light.
Instead of smiling...
He quietly whispered,
"Charles..."
"If only you could see what your favorite student has become."
He closed the file marked Project Phoenix.
"The truth is almost ready to surface.
