Chapter 6 A Silent Promise
The red light above the operating room remained on as doctors worked tirelessly to save Mason's life. Olivia sat with her hands tightly clasped together, unable to stop praying. Every time the doors opened, her heart leaped, only to sink again when another nurse hurried past. Hours felt like days.
Ethan sat beside her in complete silence. He had canceled two important meetings to be there, something he had never done for anyone outside his family. He wasn't sure why he had come. Perhaps it was because the surgery was part of the contract. Perhaps it was because he had promised to take care of everything. Whatever the reason, he found himself unable to leave.
Olivia looked at him after several minutes.
"You didn't have to come."
He kept his eyes on the operating room doors.
"I said I would handle everything."
"I know."
Silence returned.
After another hour, Olivia quietly spoke again.
"Thank you."
Ethan looked at her.
"You've thanked me too many times."
"I don't think I can ever thank you enough."
He didn't answer.
For the first time in years, someone's gratitude made him feel strangely uncomfortable.
A nurse walked into the waiting area.
"Miss Reed?"
Olivia jumped to her feet.
"Yes."
"The surgery is going well. There have been no complications so far."
Relief flooded her face.
"Can I see him?"
"Not yet. It will take another few hours."
She nodded before sitting back down.
Ethan noticed the exhaustion in her eyes.
"When was the last time you ate?"
She blinked.
"I... don't remember."
Without another word, Ethan stood and walked away.
A few minutes later he returned carrying two cups of coffee and a small bag containing sandwiches.
Olivia stared at him in surprise.
"You bought these?"
"You can't help your brother if you collapse first."
She accepted the sandwich with a grateful smile.
"Thank you."
Ethan almost sighed.
"There it is again."
Despite everything, Olivia laughed softly.
It was the first genuine smile Ethan had seen from her.
For reasons he couldn't explain, he found himself staring at it a second longer than he intended.
Several hours later, the operating room doors finally opened.
The surgeon removed his mask and smiled.
"The operation was successful."
Olivia's knees nearly gave way.
She covered her face as tears streamed down her cheeks.
"Thank you... thank you so much."
"The next twenty four hours are important, but everything went exactly as planned."
She turned toward Ethan.
Without thinking, she threw her arms around him.
Ethan froze.
No one had hugged him in years.
He could feel her shoulders trembling as she cried with relief.
For a brief moment, he didn't move.
Then, awkwardly, he rested one hand lightly on her back.
"It's over," he said quietly.
"He's going to live."
Olivia slowly realized what she had done and stepped back immediately.
"I'm... I'm sorry."
"You don't need to apologize."
She wiped her tears, embarrassed.
"I wasn't thinking."
"I know."
Daniel, standing nearby, watched the scene with surprise.
He had worked for Ethan for eight years.
Never not once had he seen anyone hug his boss without being pushed away.
Perhaps this marriage would be different after all.
Later that afternoon, Mason regained consciousness.
Olivia hurried into his room.
He smiled weakly.
"I made it."
She laughed through fresh tears.
"You scared me."
"I told you I'd come back."
She gently squeezed his hand.
"You need to rest now."
Mason noticed Ethan standing quietly near the door.
"Is that... the man who helped us?"
Olivia hesitated.
"Yes."
Mason looked at Ethan.
"Thank you for saving my life."
Ethan simply nodded.
"You should thank your sister."
"No," Mason replied with a small smile.
"She said you made this possible."
For the first time in a very long while, Ethan found himself unable to look away.
No one had ever thanked him like that before not for his money, not for his influence, but for giving someone a second chance at life.
Outside the hospital room, William Carter received a call from Daniel.
"The surgery was successful, Chairman."
William smiled with relief.
"And Ethan?"
Daniel glanced through the window at Ethan speaking quietly with Mason and Olivia.
"I think... something is beginning to change."
William looked out across the city skyline.
"So it begins.
As evening settled over the hospital, the corridors became quieter. Most visitors had already gone home, leaving only the occasional footsteps of nurses and the steady hum of medical equipment. Olivia remained seated beside Mason's bed, gently adjusting his blanket as he slept peacefully. For the first time in weeks, the fear that had lived in her heart began to fade. The surgery was over, and her little brother had been given a second chance.
A soft knock came at the door.
Daniel stepped inside.
"Miss Reed, Mr. Carter is waiting for you outside."
Olivia looked at Mason one last time before following him into the hallway.
Ethan stood near the window overlooking the city. His suit jacket rested over one arm, and his tie had been loosened slightly after the long day. He looked tired, though he would never admit it.
"You stayed all day," Olivia said quietly.
"It seemed necessary."
"You missed work because of us."
"I can always reschedule meetings."
She smiled faintly.
"I never thought someone like you would care about strangers."
Ethan looked out the window.
"I don't."
The answer came so quickly that Olivia almost laughed.
"You have a strange way of showing it."
For a brief moment, the corner of Ethan's mouth lifted almost into a smile before disappearing again.
He reached into his jacket and handed her a small envelope.
"What's this?"
"The lease for your apartment has been renewed for another year. All outstanding rent has been paid."
Olivia stared at him in disbelief.
"I didn't ask for this."
"I know."
"I can't keep accepting everything from you."
"You signed a contract. Taking care of your financial problems is part of my responsibility now."
She lowered her eyes.
"I still want to repay you someday."
"You don't owe me anything beyond the agreement."
His words were firm, but not cruel.
Just then Mason's doctor approached them.
"Mr. Carter, Miss Reed."
Both turned toward him.
"I wanted to let you know that Mason is recovering remarkably well. If everything continues like this, he should be discharged in a few days."
Olivia smiled with relief.
"Thank you, Doctor."
After the doctor left, Daniel glanced at his watch.
"Sir, the wedding rehearsal is tomorrow morning."
Olivia blinked.
"I almost forgot..."
Ethan nodded.
"The wedding is the day after."
Her smile slowly faded.
Everything had happened so quickly that she had barely had time to process it. In less than forty-eight hours, she would become Mrs. Ethan Carter.
As they walked toward the hospital entrance, Ethan suddenly stopped.
"Olivia."
It was the first time he had called her by her first name.
She looked at him in surprise.
"Yes?"
"When we get married..."
He hesitated for only a second.
"...there will be reporters everywhere. They will ask questions about our relationship."
"I understand."
"You don't have to convince them with words."
She frowned slightly.
"What do you mean?"
"They only need to believe we're happy."
Olivia nodded slowly.
"I'll do my best."
Ethan looked into her eyes.
"So will I."
The words were simple, but something about them made Olivia's heart beat a little faster.
For the first time, she realized that beneath Ethan's cold exterior was a man who never made promises lightly.
As she watched him walk toward the waiting car, she whispered to herself,
"Maybe this won't be as impossible as I thought."
Neither of them noticed the photographer standing across the street with a camera hidden behind a parked vehicle.
The shutter clicked several times.
One photograph captured Ethan looking at Olivia.
Another captured Olivia smiling at him.
