Chapter 29 – The Anonymous Envelope
The elegant ballroom gradually fell silent as the master of ceremonies stepped onto the stage.
"Ladies and gentlemen..."
"Welcome to the Whitmore Business Excellence Gala."
A round of applause echoed through the magnificent hall.
Crystal chandeliers glittered overhead while waiters quietly served drinks to the distinguished guests.
But Ethan's attention wasn't on the stage.
It was fixed on the cream-colored envelope resting on the table before him.
No sender.
No signature.
Just a single sentence.
"The truth isn't always what it seems."
Olivia looked at him.
"Should we open it?"
Ethan studied the envelope for a moment before nodding.
"Carefully."
He slid a finger beneath the seal and unfolded the paper inside.
His expression remained unreadable.
Olivia leaned closer.
"What does it say?"
The letter contained only three lines.
«Be careful who you trust.
Not every coincidence is an accident.
Watch the people around your wife.»
Olivia frowned.
"What does that even mean?"
Ethan folded the paper neatly.
"It means someone wants us suspicious of everyone."
She looked around the ballroom.
"Do you think Victor sent it?"
"It's possible."
"But I won't jump to conclusions."
He quietly slipped the letter into the inside pocket of his jacket.
"We're not letting this ruin the evening."
Olivia nodded.
"Agreed."
---
The awards ceremony officially began.
One by one, outstanding entrepreneurs and charitable organizations were recognized for their achievements.
Applause filled the ballroom after every award.
Eventually, the host smiled toward the audience.
"Our next award recognizes exceptional contributions to education and community development."
A large photograph of children's classrooms appeared on the giant screen.
"This year's Community Impact Award goes to..."
The audience waited in anticipation.
"...The Carter Foundation!"
Thunderous applause erupted throughout the ballroom.
Olivia's eyes widened.
"We won?"
Ethan smiled.
"It appears we did."
The host continued.
"We would like to invite Mrs. Olivia Carter to the stage to accept the award on behalf of the foundation."
For a brief moment, Olivia froze.
She looked at Ethan.
"I wasn't expecting this."
He smiled reassuringly.
"You'll do wonderfully."
"I've never given a speech at an event this big."
"You've spoken to hundreds of children."
"This is easier."
She laughed nervously.
"I don't think so."
He gently squeezed her hand.
"I'll be right here."
Taking a deep breath, Olivia stood.
The ballroom applauded warmly as she walked toward the stage.
---
Victor Hayes watched from his table with narrowed eyes.
"So..."
"They're giving her an award."
His assistant nodded.
"Unexpected."
Victor leaned back.
"Not entirely."
"The public loves her."
"And tonight..."
"...they'll love her even more."
His expression grew colder.
"Which means they'll notice every mistake she makes."
---
Olivia reached the podium.
The applause slowly faded.
She looked across the enormous ballroom.
Hundreds of faces stared back at her.
For the first time...
She felt nervous.
Then her eyes found Ethan.
He smiled gently and gave her an encouraging nod.
Immediately...
Her nervousness eased.
She smiled.
"Good evening, everyone."
"I'm honestly surprised to be standing here tonight."
A few guests laughed softly.
"I never imagined that helping children, families, and communities would lead me to a stage like this."
She paused.
"I've always believed kindness doesn't have to be extraordinary."
"Sometimes..."
"It's as simple as listening to someone."
"Sharing a meal."
"Reading a story to a child."
"Or reminding a stranger that they're not alone."
The ballroom grew completely silent.
Her sincerity captured everyone's attention.
"This award doesn't belong to me."
"It belongs to every volunteer..."
"Every teacher..."
"Every donor..."
"And every child who reminds us why hope is worth protecting."
She smiled warmly.
"So..."
"Thank you."
"Let's keep making kindness contagious."
The room erupted into applause.
Several guests rose to their feet.
Then more.
Within seconds...
The entire ballroom was standing.
A standing ovation.
Ethan watched proudly.
He had negotiated billion-dollar deals.
Addressed international conferences.
Commanded boardrooms filled with powerful executives.
Yet...
He had never been prouder than he was at that moment.
Quietly, almost to himself, he whispered,
"That's my wife."
Across the ballroom, Victor Hayes watched the standing ovation with an unreadable expression.
His fingers tightened around his wine glass.
"The higher she rises..."
"...the harder she'll fall."
His eyes shifted toward Adrian Brooks, who was also applauding politely.
Victor's cold smile returned.
"It won't be long now."
The applause continued long after Olivia stepped away from the podium.
Several guests approached her to offer congratulations.
"That was a beautiful speech."
"You spoke from the heart."
"The Carter Foundation is fortunate to have you."
Olivia thanked each of them with her usual humility.
"I only accepted the award."
"It belongs to everyone who works with us."
Watching from nearby, Ethan couldn't hide the pride in his eyes.
Richard Collins leaned closer with a grin.
"I've worked for you for nearly twenty years."
"I've never seen you smile this much."
Ethan glanced at him.
"Have I been smiling?"
Richard laughed.
"You haven't stopped."
---
Olivia soon returned to their table.
The crystal award rested carefully in her hands.
She placed it on the table before sitting beside Ethan.
"So..."
She smiled nervously.
"How did I do?"
Instead of answering immediately...
Ethan looked at her quietly.
Then he said,
"You were incredible."
She laughed softly.
"I thought I stumbled over my words."
"I didn't notice."
"You didn't?"
"I was too busy admiring you."
Her cheeks instantly turned pink.
"You've been saying embarrassing things all evening."
"I'm only being honest."
William, seated beside them, laughed heartily.
"I think my grandson has finally discovered romance."
Even Olivia couldn't stop laughing.
---
Dinner was served shortly afterward.
The atmosphere relaxed as the orchestra began playing soft music once again.
Guests chatted happily while enjoying the elegant meal.
Halfway through dinner, the host returned to the stage.
"Ladies and gentlemen..."
"We have prepared one final surprise before the evening concludes."
The ballroom grew quiet.
"We would like to present a short film celebrating the year's greatest charitable achievements."
The lights dimmed.
A massive screen descended behind the stage.
Images of hospitals, schools, food drives, and community projects appeared one after another.
The audience applauded warmly.
Then...
A familiar photograph appeared.
It showed Olivia reading to children at the community center.
She smiled softly.
"I remember that day."
The slideshow continued.
Another picture.
Olivia handing books to smiling children.
Then another.
Olivia speaking with volunteers.
Everything seemed perfectly normal.
Until suddenly...
A different photograph filled the screen.
Olivia standing beside Adrian Brooks outside the community center.
The image lingered several seconds longer than the others.
A quiet murmur spread through the ballroom.
Then another photograph appeared.
Adrian handing Olivia a box of books.
Another.
The two of them talking outside the charity office.
Several guests exchanged puzzled glances.
Someone whispered,
"Isn't that the man from the news articles?"
Another replied,
"I thought so."
Olivia's smile slowly disappeared.
She turned toward Ethan.
"I don't understand..."
"I never approved these pictures."
Ethan's expression became cold.
"This wasn't part of the presentation."
---
Backstage...
The event coordinator stared at the screen in horror.
"Who changed the slideshow?"
Several technicians hurried toward the control booth.
"I don't know!"
"We're trying to stop it!"
Within seconds, the screen went black.
The lights returned.
The host looked completely confused.
"Ladies and gentlemen..."
"We sincerely apologize."
"There appears to have been a technical error."
But the whispers had already begun.
---
Victor Hayes calmly sipped his wine.
His assistant smiled faintly.
"That should get people talking."
Victor nodded.
"I don't need them to believe anything."
"I only need them to wonder."
He glanced toward Ethan.
"Once doubt enters a room..."
"...it rarely leaves quietly."
---
At the Carter table, Olivia looked visibly shaken.
"I don't know why those pictures were shown."
"I swear—"
Before she could finish...
Ethan gently took her hand beneath the table.
She looked at him.
His expression was calm.
"I know."
"You don't have to explain."
Her eyes filled with emotion.
"You really don't doubt me?"
He shook his head.
"Not even for a second."
She squeezed his hand tightly.
"Thank you."
Across the table, William smiled with quiet pride.
Their trust in each other hadn't weakened.
It had grown stronger.
---
As the gala came to an end, guests slowly made their way toward the exit.
Reporters gathered outside once again.
Camera flashes lit up the entrance as Ethan and Olivia emerged together.
One reporter shouted,
"Mr. Carter!"
"What do you think about the photographs shown tonight?"
Another called out,
"Mrs. Carter, is there any truth to the rumors involving Adrian Brooks?"
Before Olivia could answer...
Ethan stepped forward.
His voice was calm, steady, and impossible to misinterpret.
"My wife has conducted herself with honesty and dignity from the day I met her."
"The rumors are false."
"The photographs were deliberately presented to create a false impression."
"I trust my wife completely."
He looked directly into the cameras.
"And anyone who continues spreading lies about her will hear from my lawyers."
Silence fell over the crowd.
Without another word, Ethan placed a protective hand around Olivia's waist and guided her toward their waiting car.
Inside the black sedan parked across the street, Victor Hayes watched the scene unfold.
For the first time that night...
His smile disappeared.
"They're stronger than I expected."
His assistant glanced at him.
"What now?"
Victor looked toward the departing Rolls-Royce.
"Then we'll stop attacking their trust."
His eyes hardened.
"It's time to attack something else
