Chapter 25 – A Growing Bond
Monday morning arrived with a gentle breeze sweeping across the gardens of Carter Manor.
The roses bloomed beautifully beneath the warm sunlight, and birds sang from the tall oak trees surrounding the estate.
Inside the mansion, the atmosphere was just as peaceful.
Olivia walked into the dining room carrying a bouquet of freshly picked roses.
She placed them in a crystal vase before smiling at William.
"Good morning, Grandpa."
William lowered his newspaper.
"Good morning, my dear."
"You've made the room beautiful again."
Olivia laughed.
"I think flowers make every breakfast happier."
William smiled knowingly.
"I think you're the reason breakfast is happier."
Before Olivia could reply, Ethan entered wearing a navy-blue suit.
His eyes immediately found her.
"Morning."
She smiled warmly.
"Good morning."
As he walked past her chair, he noticed something unusual.
The silver bracelet he had given her a few days earlier still rested on her wrist.
"You've been wearing it."
Olivia looked down at the bracelet before smiling.
"I haven't taken it off."
"I wasn't sure you'd like it."
She looked back at him.
"I love it."
Her simple answer made Ethan smile without realizing it.
William quietly hid another grin behind his newspaper.
---
After breakfast, Olivia prepared to leave for the Carter Foundation.
As she reached the front door, Ethan called after her.
"Olivia."
She turned around.
"Yes?"
He walked toward her.
"I'll be working late tonight."
She nodded.
"I figured."
"So..."
He hesitated.
"Don't wait for dinner."
She smiled mischievously.
"What if I want to?"
"You'll get hungry."
"I can wait."
He chuckled softly.
"You're stubborn."
"I learned from you."
Daniel, standing nearby, struggled not to laugh.
---
At the Carter Foundation headquarters, Olivia spent the morning meeting with volunteers.
They discussed a new literacy program for children in underprivileged neighborhoods.
As the meeting ended, Grace Sullivan approached her.
"Mrs. Carter."
"Yes?"
"Someone made a generous donation this morning."
"Really?"
Grace nodded.
"They requested to remain anonymous."
"That's wonderful."
As they spoke, another familiar voice interrupted.
"I hope I'm not interrupting."
Olivia turned.
"Mr. Brooks."
Adrian smiled politely.
"I was delivering books to the foundation."
Grace greeted him warmly.
"Mr. Brooks has helped several of our community projects."
Olivia smiled.
"It's nice to see you again."
Adrian held up a small box.
"I also brought these."
Inside were dozens of brand-new children's storybooks.
Olivia's eyes lit up.
"They're beautiful."
"I thought the children might enjoy them."
She smiled sincerely.
"Thank you."
"I'm sure they will."
The three of them spent several minutes discussing future charity events before Adrian excused himself.
As he walked away, Grace smiled.
"He seems like a wonderful young man."
Olivia nodded.
"He really does."
---
Meanwhile...
At Carter Group Headquarters...
Richard Collins entered Ethan's office.
"We've confirmed the acquisition."
"Excellent."
Richard hesitated.
"There's something else."
Ethan looked up.
"What?"
"Our foundation reported another meeting between Mrs. Carter and Adrian Brooks."
Ethan slowly put down his pen.
"Another coincidence?"
"It appears so."
Richard shrugged.
"They both work with the same charities."
Ethan nodded.
"Probably."
Yet...
Something about it continued to bother him.
Not because he doubted Olivia.
Never that.
But because Victor Hayes rarely believed in coincidence.
---
Across town...
Victor Hayes stood in his office, watching security footage from outside the Carter Foundation.
His assistant smiled.
"They're becoming comfortable around each other."
Victor nodded.
"Exactly as planned."
Adrian entered moments later.
"She thanked me for the books."
Victor smiled.
"Good."
"Keep earning her trust."
Adrian frowned slightly.
"I still don't understand."
"If your goal is Ethan..."
"Why involve Olivia?"
Victor walked toward the window.
Without turning around, he answered quietly.
"Because Ethan Carter would sacrifice anything..."
"...for the woman he loves."
He slowly faced Adrian.
"And once a man begins protecting his heart..."
"...he stops protecting everything else."
A cold silence filled the room.
Victor smiled.
"Our real game..."
"...is only beginning."
That evening, Carter Manor was unusually quiet.
The grandfather clock in the entrance hall chimed seven times as Olivia glanced toward the front door.
Ethan still hadn't returned.
Remembering his words from that morning, she tried not to wait for him.
Still...
She couldn't bring herself to start dinner.
William noticed immediately.
"You said you weren't going to wait."
Olivia smiled sheepishly.
"I know."
"But it feels strange eating without him."
William chuckled.
"I suppose this house has changed more than I realized."
She looked at him curiously.
"What do you mean?"
"There was a time when Ethan rarely came home before midnight."
"He always ate alone."
"And now..."
William smiled warmly.
"...someone is waiting for him."
Olivia lowered her eyes.
"I guess I am."
---
An hour later...
The sound of a car entering the driveway echoed through the mansion.
Olivia immediately stood.
William laughed.
"You moved rather quickly."
"I was only..."
She stopped herself before smiling.
"...going to see if he arrived safely."
William simply nodded, pretending to believe her.
Moments later, Ethan walked through the front door.
His tie was slightly loosened, and he looked exhausted.
The moment he saw Olivia standing in the hallway, a tired smile appeared on his face.
"You're still awake."
She folded her arms.
"You said not to wait."
"I know."
"But you did."
She nodded.
"I did."
Ethan sighed softly.
"You should have eaten."
"I wasn't hungry."
He knew that wasn't entirely true.
She had been waiting for him.
---
In the dining room, Anna quickly served a warm dinner.
As they ate together, Olivia noticed Ethan rubbing his temples.
"Long day?"
He nodded.
"Meetings from morning until evening."
She placed another piece of grilled chicken onto his plate.
"You need to eat more."
Ethan looked at her with amusement.
"Now you're taking care of me?"
"I've been doing that for weeks."
He couldn't argue.
William watched the exchange with a smile.
"You two sound like an old married couple already."
Olivia laughed.
"We are married, Grandpa."
William laughed louder.
"Fair point."
---
After dinner, Ethan and Olivia stepped into the garden for some fresh air.
The night was peaceful.
The roses swayed gently in the breeze, and the fountain's soft sound filled the silence.
Olivia walked slowly beside him.
"I'm glad you came home early enough for dinner."
"So am I."
She looked up at the stars.
"I've never lived somewhere this peaceful."
Ethan followed her gaze.
"I didn't notice how peaceful it was either."
"Until?"
He looked at her.
"Until you moved in."
Her heart skipped a beat.
She looked away, unable to hide the smile on her face.
"You've been saying things like that a lot lately."
"I'm only telling the truth."
For a few moments, neither of them spoke.
Then Olivia noticed a small wooden swing beneath the large oak tree.
"I didn't know that was there."
"My mother loved sitting there."
"Really?"
He nodded.
"When I was little, she'd read books to me there."
Olivia smiled.
"It must hold a lot of memories."
"It does."
She walked toward the swing and sat down gently.
"It feels nice."
Ethan stood beside her.
"Would you like me to push you?"
She laughed.
"I'm not a child."
"I know."
"But you smiled the moment you saw it."
She couldn't deny that.
"Maybe just a little."
He gently pushed the swing.
It moved slowly beneath the moonlight.
Olivia closed her eyes, enjoying the cool evening breeze.
"This is perfect."
Ethan watched her quietly.
For the first time in years...
He felt completely at peace.
---
Across the city...
Victor Hayes sat inside his office studying another set of surveillance photographs.
One picture showed Ethan and Olivia walking through the garden.
Another captured Ethan gently pushing Olivia on the swing.
Victor's expression darkened.
"They're becoming closer much faster than I expected."
His assistant looked uneasy.
"Should we move sooner?"
Victor shook his head.
"No."
"The stronger their feelings become..."
"...the greater the damage."
He picked up the photograph of Adrian standing beside Olivia at the community center.
A slow smile spread across his face.
"Soon..."
"...these innocent meetings will become something entirely different."
He placed the photograph inside a folder labeled Project Carter.
"Prepare the next phase."
His assistant nodded.
"Yes, sir."
---
Back at Carter Manor...
As the night grew colder, Olivia stood from the swing.
"We should go inside."
Ethan nodded.
As they walked back toward the mansion, she suddenly stumbled over a loose stone hidden in the garden path.
"Oh!"
Before she could fall...
Ethan caught her around the waist.
For a brief moment...
She was standing only inches away from him.
Their eyes met.
Neither of them moved.
Neither of them spoke.
The world around them seemed to disappear.
Ethan slowly brushed a loose strand of hair away from her face.
"Careful."
His voice was barely above a whisper.
Olivia's heart pounded in her chest.
"Thank you..."
Neither of them realized they were still standing so close.
From the upstairs balcony, William smiled to himself before quietly closing the curtains.
"I don't think they'll need my help much longer."
Below, Ethan reluctantly released Olivia's waist.
They walked back into the mansion together.
Neither noticed the hidden camera beyond the estate wall capturing the moment Ethan held her in his arms.
The image was instantly transmitted to Victor Hayes.
He smiled coldly.
"Perfect."
"The pieces are finally falling into place."
