Chapter 19 – The First Move The following morning, Carter Manor woke to clear blue skies after the previous night's storm. Sunlight poured through the windows as the household returned to its usual routine. Olivia was already in the kitchen helping Chef Martin prepare breakfast. "I can handle the pancakes," she insisted with a smile. Chef Martin laughed. "Mrs. Carter, if Mr. Carter finds out I made you cook, he'll probably fire me." Olivia giggled. "He wouldn't do that." "You haven't seen how protective he can be." Before she could reply, Ethan walked into the kitchen. He had just finished his morning workout and wore a fitted black T-shirt with gray sweatpants. His hair was still slightly damp from his shower. Olivia looked up and smiled. "Good morning." "Morning." His eyes immediately landed on the flour on her cheek. Without saying a word, he walked over. "What?" She looked confused. "Do I have something on my face?" Instead of answering, Ethan gently brushed the flour from her cheek with his thumb. "There." For a moment... The kitchen became completely silent. Olivia's heart skipped a beat. "T-Thank you." Ethan nodded calmly, though even he noticed how close they were standing. Chef Martin quietly looked away with a smile. Perhaps... Love really was beginning to bloom inside Carter Manor. --- During breakfast, William watched the two of them carefully. "So..." He folded his newspaper. "The Whitmore Charity Ball is tonight." Olivia looked up. "I almost forgot." William laughed. "I don't think the newspapers did." He slid the entertainment section across the table. The headline read: NEWLYWEDS ETHAN AND OLIVIA CARTER EXPECTED TO ATTEND TONIGHT'S CHARITY BALL. Olivia sighed dramatically. "They're following us everywhere." Ethan calmly sipped his coffee. "They'll lose interest eventually." William raised an eyebrow. "I doubt it." "Especially when half the city thinks the two of you are the perfect couple." Olivia glanced shyly at Ethan. He didn't deny it. Instead, he simply continued eating breakfast. --- At Carter Group Headquarters... Richard Collins entered Ethan's office carrying a tablet. "We've received another partnership request." Ethan looked up. "From whom?" "Hayes International." The room became silent. Daniel immediately noticed the change in Ethan's expression. Richard continued. "Their chairman is requesting a private meeting." Ethan leaned back in his chair. "I declined the last three invitations." "I know." Richard frowned. "This one seems... unusually persistent." Ethan's eyes narrowed slightly. "Tell them my answer hasn't changed." Richard nodded. "I'll inform them." After he left, Daniel spoke quietly. "Victor Hayes?" "Yes." "He isn't someone who gives up easily." "I know." Ethan looked out the window. "Which is exactly why I don't trust him." --- Across the city... Victor Hayes smiled as he read the email informing him that Ethan had rejected another meeting. He wasn't disappointed. He had expected it. His assistant entered. "Sir." Victor closed the laptop. "Our invitation was rejected." "I know." "What should we do now?" Victor slowly stood and walked toward the large window overlooking the city. "If Ethan won't come to me..." A cold smile spread across his face. "...I'll go to him." He picked up another photograph of Olivia. "No." He corrected himself. "I'll go to her." The assistant hesitated. "Sir..." "I thought you said not to act yet." Victor smiled. "I'm not." "I'm simply going to introduce myself." His smile carried no warmth. Only calculation. Only danger. --- Back at Carter Manor... Olivia stood in the ballroom practicing the waltz steps Ethan had taught her. She counted quietly to herself. "One... two... three..." She spun gracefully before stopping. A familiar voice applauded behind her. "You've improved." She turned around. Ethan had returned home much earlier than expected. "I thought you were working." "I finished early." "For me?" He smiled faintly. "We have a ball to attend tonight." She laughed. "I suppose we do." He walked toward her. "One more practice?" She placed her hand in his without hesitation. "I'd like that." As soft music filled the room once again, they began to dance. Neither of them noticed the black luxury car parked across the road from Carter Manor. Inside, a man lifted a camera and quietly photographed them through the ballroom windows. He smiled before sending the pictures to Victor Hayes. A single message came back almost immediately. Tonight... our game begins By seven o'clock that evening, Carter Manor was alive with activity. Servants hurried through the hallways making the final preparations for the Whitmore Foundation Charity Ball. In her dressing room, Olivia stood before the mirror as Sophia carefully adjusted the last folds of her silver evening gown. The elegant dress shimmered softly under the lights, its fitted bodice flowing into a graceful skirt that made her look like she had stepped out of a fairy tale. Sophia smiled proudly. "I think this is my favorite dress on you." Olivia looked at her reflection. "I hope I'm not overdressed." Sophia laughed. "Trust me, once Mr. Carter sees you, he'll forget everyone else is in the room." Olivia blushed. "You always exaggerate." "I've never been more serious." A gentle knock interrupted them. "Mrs. Carter," Mr. Harris called from outside. "Mr. Carter is waiting." Olivia took a deep breath. "Wish me luck." "You don't need luck," Sophia replied. "You only need to smile." --- Downstairs, Ethan stood near the grand staircase wearing a perfectly tailored midnight-black tuxedo. William walked over with a proud smile. "You seem nervous." "I'm not." William chuckled. "You've checked your watch four times in the last minute." Ethan looked away. "I was checking the time." "Of course you were." Before Ethan could respond, footsteps echoed from the staircase. He looked up. Olivia slowly descended, one hand lightly resting on the polished railing. The silver gown sparkled with every step. Her hair fell in soft curls over one shoulder, and the diamond necklace William had gifted her reflected the warm light of the chandelier. The entire hall seemed to fall silent. Ethan couldn't take his eyes off her. She reached the final step and smiled shyly. "How do I look?" He walked toward her. For several seconds... He said nothing. Then, with complete sincerity, he answered, "You look breathtaking." Olivia felt her heart flutter. "And you look very handsome." William smiled broadly. "Now that's a proper married couple." Both of them laughed. --- The Rolls-Royce arrived at the Whitmore Grand Hotel twenty minutes later. Camera flashes lit up the entrance the moment the car stopped. "The Carters have arrived!" "Look over here!" "Mr. Carter! Mrs. Carter!" Ethan stepped out first before turning to help Olivia. She accepted his hand, smiling gratefully. Together, they walked down the red carpet. Guests paused to admire them. "They're stunning." "They're even more beautiful than they looked at the last gala." "They really look in love." Olivia heard the whispers and looked nervously at Ethan. He leaned closer. "Ignore them." "I'm trying." Without hesitation, he gently placed his hand at the small of her back. The reassuring gesture immediately calmed her. --- Inside the ballroom, elegant music floated through the air while hundreds of guests mingled beneath magnificent crystal chandeliers. The host welcomed them warmly. "Mr. and Mrs. Carter, thank you for joining us." "It's our pleasure," Ethan replied. As they greeted guests, Olivia's warmth quickly won people over. She spoke kindly with elderly donors, laughed with young volunteers, and listened patiently to everyone who approached her. An elderly woman smiled at Ethan. "You chose well." Ethan looked at Olivia, who was helping an elderly guest find a seat. "Yes..." He answered quietly. "I did." --- Across the ballroom, another guest watched the couple from a distance. He wore a tailored charcoal suit and held a glass of champagne. His expression remained calm, but his eyes never left Ethan and Olivia. Victor Hayes. He smiled faintly. "So that's Olivia." His assistant stepped beside him. "Should we approach them now, sir?" Victor shook his head. "Not yet." "I want to observe." His gaze remained fixed on Olivia. "So this is the woman who changed Ethan Carter." A slow smile spread across his face. "Interesting." --- A few minutes later, the orchestra began playing a graceful waltz. The master of ceremonies stepped onto the stage. "Ladies and gentlemen..." "As tradition requires, we invite Mr. Ethan Carter and Mrs. Olivia Carter to open tonight's dance." The audience applauded. Olivia looked at Ethan. "Nervous?" He smiled. "Not with you." She placed her hand in his. "I hope I remember the steps." "You will." Together they walked to the center of the dance floor. As the music began, Ethan gently guided her into the first movement. One... Two... Three... The steps flowed effortlessly. The ballroom disappeared around them. There were no cameras. No reporters. No wealthy guests. Only the quiet music... And the two of them moving perfectly together. The audience watched in admiration. "They're incredible." "They dance as though they've known each other forever." "They're perfect together." Standing at the edge of the ballroom, Victor watched with an unreadable expression. His smile slowly disappeared. "They're happier than I expected." He tightened his grip on his champagne glass. "No matter..." He murmured to himself. "The happiest people..." "...have the furthest to fall." As Ethan gently spun Olivia beneath the sparkling chandeliers, neither of them noticed Victor turning away and walking toward the exit. His first appearance had gone exactly as planned. He had seen enough. Now... He knew exactly where to strike
