A STRANGER'S KINDNESS

Chapter 21 – A Stranger's Kindness A week had passed since the Whitmore Charity Ball. Life at Carter Manor returned to its peaceful rhythm, but Ethan couldn't shake the uneasy feeling Victor Hayes had left behind. He hadn't told Olivia everything. He didn't want her worrying. Yet somehow... The feeling that something was about to happen refused to leave him. --- Early Monday morning, Olivia was helping William organize donations for the Carter Foundation. The study was filled with neatly stacked boxes of books, clothes, and school supplies that would be delivered to orphanages across the city. William adjusted his glasses as he reviewed the donation list. "We've received more contributions this year than ever before." Olivia smiled. "That's wonderful." "I think the gala encouraged people to give." William looked at her with a proud smile. "I think you encouraged them." She laughed softly. "I only talked to people." "You did more than that." He pointed toward a newspaper lying on the table. The headline read: MRS. OLIVIA CARTER INSPIRES RECORD CHARITY DONATIONS. Olivia sighed. "I wish they'd stop writing about me." William chuckled. "That won't happen anytime soon." --- Meanwhile, Ethan was preparing to leave for work. As he adjusted his cufflinks, Daniel approached him. "Sir." "What is it?" "Our security team has noticed the same black sedan near the estate three times this week." Ethan's expression hardened. "The license plate?" "It changes every day." "So they're using different vehicles." Daniel nodded. "We believe someone is watching the manor." Ethan was silent for several seconds. "Increase security." "Quietly." "I don't want Olivia or Grandpa to become worried." "Understood." --- Later that afternoon, Olivia decided to personally deliver several boxes of children's books to a nearby community center supported by the Carter Foundation. When Ethan learned of her plans, he frowned. "You don't have to do it yourself." She smiled. "I want to." "I can send staff." "I know." She walked closer and gently straightened his tie. "But meeting the children means more than sending boxes." Ethan looked into her eyes. "Take two security guards." She smiled. "You're worrying again." "I am." She reached for his hand. "I'll be careful." After a brief pause, he nodded. "Call me when you're finished." "I promise." --- The community center was filled with laughter as children ran through the playground. The moment Olivia arrived, they rushed toward her. "Mrs. Carter!" "You came back!" She laughed happily. "I promised I would." For the next hour she read storybooks, helped the younger children paint colorful pictures, and handed out new books and school supplies. One little boy tugged gently on her sleeve. "Miss Olivia?" "Yes?" "Are you really married to the man from TV?" She laughed. "I suppose I am." "Is he nice?" She smiled without hesitation. "Very." The little boy grinned. "Then he's lucky." Her heart warmed. "So am I." --- As Olivia prepared to leave, she noticed an elderly woman standing outside the center struggling to carry several heavy grocery bags. Without thinking, Olivia hurried over. "May I help you?" The woman looked embarrassed. "Oh, dear... I couldn't ask you." "You didn't." Olivia smiled warmly. "I'm offering." Together they carried the groceries toward a nearby apartment building. The woman smiled gratefully. "You remind me of my granddaughter." Olivia smiled. "I'll take that as a compliment." "You should." After helping her upstairs, Olivia politely excused herself and headed back toward the waiting car. She never noticed... That a man sitting inside a parked black sedan across the street had photographed the entire encounter. Within moments... The photographs were sent to Victor Hayes. Victor studied them carefully before smiling. "So..." "She can't ignore people who need help." He leaned back in his chair. "Kindness..." "...can be very predictable." His assistant looked uneasy. "Sir..." "Are we really going through with this?" Victor's smile never faded. "Oh, yes." He closed the folder containing Olivia's photographs. "It's finally time..." "...to make our first move." The black SUV pulled away from the community center as Olivia leaned back in her seat with a satisfied smile. One of the security guards glanced at her through the rearview mirror. "You seem happy, Mrs. Carter." She smiled. "I am." "The children looked so excited." "They always remind me that happiness can come from the smallest things." The guard nodded respectfully. "Mr. Carter was right." She looked up. "About what?" "You're too kind." Olivia laughed softly. "I don't think that's a bad thing." "No, ma'am." "It isn't." But his expression suggested he was thinking of the extra security Ethan had ordered that morning. --- At Carter Group Headquarters, Ethan was finishing a meeting when his phone vibrated. Olivia: I'm heading home now. Everything went well. Without realizing it, he smiled. Richard Collins noticed immediately. "Good news?" Ethan placed his phone back on the table. "Yes." Richard chuckled. "I remember when your phone only made you frown." The board members laughed quietly. Ethan simply shook his head. "Let's continue." But everyone in the room could tell his mood had already improved. --- Across the city... Victor Hayes stood inside his office studying the latest photographs. One showed Olivia reading to children. Another showed her helping the elderly woman carry groceries. His assistant entered. "Our man followed her the entire afternoon." Victor nodded. "And?" "She never ignored anyone who asked for help." Victor smiled coldly. "Exactly as I expected." He walked toward the window overlooking the city. "People think kindness is always a strength." He slowly turned around. "But sometimes..." "...it's the easiest weakness to exploit." His assistant remained silent. Victor opened a drawer and removed a sealed envelope. Inside was a forged medical report and several fake bills. He placed them neatly inside another folder. "Tomorrow..." "...our first test begins." --- The following morning, Carter Manor was peaceful. Olivia was arranging fresh flowers in the entrance hall when Mr. Harris approached. "Mrs. Carter." "Yes?" "There's a young woman at the front gate." Olivia looked surprised. "Does she have an appointment?" "No." "She says she desperately needs help." Olivia immediately frowned. "What happened?" "She wouldn't explain." "She only asked to speak with you." Mr. Harris hesitated. "Mr. Carter instructed us not to allow strangers onto the property." Olivia nodded thoughtfully. "He's right." She walked toward the front entrance. "I'll speak to her at the gate." --- Outside, a young woman in simple clothes stood nervously, holding the hand of a little boy who looked about seven years old. The child's face was pale. The woman looked exhausted. The moment she saw Olivia, tears filled her eyes. "Mrs. Carter..." "Please..." "I don't know who else to ask." Olivia stepped closer. "What's wrong?" "My son..." "He's very sick." She held out several medical papers with trembling hands. "The hospital says he needs treatment immediately." "I've tried everything." "I've sold almost everything we own." She wiped away her tears. "But it's not enough." The little boy looked down silently, clutching a worn teddy bear. Olivia knelt beside him. "What's your name?" "Ben." "Hello, Ben." He gave her a tiny smile. Olivia looked back at the woman. "Have you contacted any charities?" "I have." "They're already full." "I was told..." "...that Mrs. Olivia Carter never turns away someone in need." Olivia's heart ached. She looked at the documents in her hands. Everything appeared genuine. Behind the security gate, one of Ethan's guards quietly stepped forward. "Mrs. Carter..." He lowered his voice. "Mr. Carter asked us to be careful." Olivia looked at the frightened child again. She couldn't ignore him. Not when he reminded her so much of Mason during his illness. She stood up. "I'll have the Carter Foundation review these documents immediately." The young woman burst into tears. "Thank you..." "Thank you so much." Olivia smiled gently. "We'll do everything we can." Hidden inside a parked delivery van across the street, a tiny camera captured the entire exchange. The footage was transmitted live. Victor Hayes watched from his office. A slow smile spread across his face. "There it is..." "The first step." He closed the video feed. "Now let's see..." "...whether Ethan Carter's greatest strength..." "...becomes his greatest weakness
