Chapter 11 – A Day in Her New World
The morning sun bathed Carter Manor in a warm golden glow. The mansion had already come alive as maids polished the marble floors, gardeners trimmed the hedges, and chefs prepared breakfast. Since becoming Mrs. Carter, Olivia had begun learning everyone's names. She greeted every servant with a smile, making each of them feel noticed.
"Good morning, Mrs. Carter," one of the maids greeted.
"Good morning, Anna. How is your daughter feeling today?" Olivia asked.
Anna looked surprised that Olivia remembered.
"She's much better now. Thank you for asking."
"I'm glad to hear that."
As Olivia continued through the hallway, another maid smiled.
"The staff already adore her."
"I've never seen the house feel so lively."
Inside the dining room, Ethan was reading the morning business newspaper while sipping a cup of black coffee. He looked up as Olivia entered.
"Good morning."
"Good morning."
She took her seat opposite him.
"I hope you slept well."
"I did."
Mr. Harris placed breakfast on the table before quietly leaving them alone.
For a few moments, they ate in comfortable silence.
Then Ethan folded his newspaper.
"I've cleared my schedule for this afternoon."
Olivia looked up.
"You have?"
"We're going shopping."
She blinked.
"Shopping?"
"You'll be attending charity dinners, business events, and family gatherings with me. Your wardrobe needs more than casual clothes."
Olivia smiled awkwardly.
"I already have plenty of clothes."
"You have clothes."
He took another sip of coffee.
"You don't have what you'll need."
She wanted to argue but knew he was right.
"Alright."
A faint smile crossed Ethan's face.
"I'll be home by noon."
After breakfast, Ethan left for Carter Group while Olivia decided to explore more of the mansion.
She wandered into the library and stopped in amazement.
Thousands of books lined the towering shelves from floor to ceiling. A rolling ladder rested against one wall, while comfortable leather chairs surrounded a large stone fireplace.
"This place is incredible."
William Carter looked up from the book he was reading.
"I had a feeling I'd find you here."
Olivia laughed softly.
"I didn't know there was a library this big."
"My wife loved books."
He closed the novel in his hands.
"I've been waiting to ask you something."
She sat beside him.
"What is it?"
"Are you happy?"
The question surprised her.
She thought carefully before answering.
"My life has changed so quickly."
"I know."
"I'm still trying to adjust."
William nodded.
"But?"
She smiled.
"But everyone here has been kind to me."
"And Ethan?"
Olivia lowered her eyes.
"He's different from what people think."
William smiled knowingly.
"I've always believed that."
"He doesn't say much."
"He never has."
"But..."
She looked toward the window.
"...he notices everything."
William laughed.
"You've figured him out already."
She smiled shyly.
"I think he's kinder than he lets people see."
William's smile grew wider.
"I couldn't have chosen a better granddaughter."
Just then Daniel entered the library.
"Mrs. Carter."
"Yes?"
"Mr. Carter asked me to let you know he'll arrive earlier than expected."
She looked at the clock.
"So soon?"
"He canceled his last meeting."
William raised an eyebrow.
"He canceled work?"
Daniel nodded.
"Apparently shopping with his wife is today's priority."
William chuckled.
"Miracles really do happen."
Less than thirty minutes later, the sound of a car engine echoed through the driveway.
Olivia walked toward the entrance just as Ethan stepped inside.
He had removed his suit jacket and loosened his tie after work, making him look far more relaxed than usual.
"I'm sorry I'm late."
She smiled.
"You aren't."
"I dislike keeping people waiting."
"I only arrived five minutes ago."
Ethan nodded.
"Good."
Daniel handed him the car keys.
"The route has been cleared."
Olivia looked confused.
"What does that mean?"
Ethan answered simply.
"It means we won't be followed by reporters."
She laughed.
"I suppose that's part of marrying a billionaire."
"It is."
He looked at her for a brief moment.
"Ready?"
She smiled brightly.
"I'm ready."
As they stepped outside together, every servant watched from the entrance.
Anna smiled.
"They look good together."
Mr. Harris folded his hands behind his back.
"They do."
William stood beside the window with a proud smile.
Without realizing it
Ethan had canceled an important business meeting.
Not for an investor.
Not for a board member.
But to spend an afternoon with his wife.
It was a small decision.
Yet somehow
It felt like the beginning of something much bigger.
The black Rolls-Royce pulled away from Carter Manor, carrying Ethan and Olivia toward their first day together outside the mansion not as strangers bound by a contract, but as two people slowly learning how to fit into each other's lives.
The Rolls-Royce came to a smooth stop in front of one of the most luxurious shopping districts in New York. The streets were lined with designer boutiques, sparkling display windows, and elegant cafés. Security guards were already waiting outside as Daniel stepped out first and opened the car door.
Olivia looked around in amazement.
"I've only seen places like this on television."
Ethan walked beside her.
"You'll get used to it."
She smiled.
"I don't think I want to."
He glanced at her.
"Why?"
"Because if I get used to spending this much money, I'll probably forget the value of it."
Her answer caught him by surprise.
Instead of replying, he simply continued walking.
The manager of the first boutique hurried to greet them.
"Mr. Carter, welcome back."
Ethan nodded politely.
"This is my wife, Olivia."
The manager's eyes widened before he smiled warmly.
"It's an honor to meet you, Mrs. Carter."
Inside, several assistants immediately brought out the newest designer collections. Dresses of every color, elegant handbags, high heels, jewelry, and accessories were displayed across the showroom.
One assistant held up a sparkling evening gown.
"This would look stunning on you, Mrs. Carter."
Olivia smiled politely.
"It's beautiful."
Another assistant brought over a deep emerald-green dress.
"And this one would be perfect for charity galas."
Within minutes, more than twenty outfits surrounded her.
Olivia looked helplessly at Ethan.
"Do I really need all of these?"
"You'll attend many formal events."
"But twenty dresses?"
Ethan looked at the display.
"Probably more."
She laughed.
"I've never even owned twenty pairs of shoes."
The manager smiled.
"Mrs. Carter, you're going to have an entirely new wardrobe."
After trying on several dresses, Olivia stepped out wearing a soft blue evening gown that flowed gracefully to the floor.
The assistants gasped.
"It fits her perfectly."
"She looks incredible."
Ethan slowly looked up from the magazine he had been pretending to read.
For a brief moment...
He forgot to speak.
The dress suited her perfectly.
Elegant.
Simple.
Beautiful.
Olivia noticed him staring.
"What do you think?"
Ethan stood and walked closer.
"It suits you."
"Only suits me?"
He looked into her eyes.
"You look beautiful."
A soft blush spread across Olivia's cheeks.
"Thank you."
The manager smiled knowingly.
"I think Mr. Carter has excellent taste."
After another hour, Ethan selected several dresses, coats, handbags, and shoes.
When the manager announced the final total, Olivia's eyes widened.
"That's enough."
Everyone looked at her.
She turned to Ethan.
"I don't need this many."
"You'll use them."
"I won't."
She gently placed several shopping bags back on the counter.
"There are women who don't even have one decent dress."
The boutique became quiet.
"I already have enough."
Ethan studied her expression.
She wasn't pretending.
She genuinely meant it.
"What would you like to do instead?" he asked.
Olivia smiled.
"Can we keep just what I need?"
He nodded.
"And the rest?"
She looked at the unopened boxes.
"Could we donate them to a women's shelter?"
Even Daniel looked surprised.
The manager smiled with admiration.
"I've never had a customer ask for that."
Olivia shrugged.
"I know what it's like to need help."
Ethan remained silent for several moments.
Then he looked at the manager.
"Keep everything."
The manager nodded.
"Yes, Mr. Carter."
Ethan continued.
"Deliver the clothes Mrs. Carter selected to Carter Manor."
He pointed toward the remaining boxes.
"And arrange for everything else to be donated to the shelter she chooses."
The manager smiled.
"It will be done immediately."
Olivia looked at Ethan.
"You don't mind?"
He shook his head.
"If that's what you want."
A warm smile spread across her face.
"Thank you."
As they left the boutique, photographers waiting across the street immediately began taking pictures.
One reporter whispered,
"They really do look like a happy couple."
Another nodded.
"Look at the way he watches her."
Ethan noticed the cameras but ignored them.
Instead, he turned toward Olivia.
"Are you hungry?"
She laughed.
"Very."
"I know a place nearby."
"You do?"
"I've been going there since I was a teenager."
She looked surprised.
"A billionaire eats somewhere other than five-star restaurants?"
A faint smile appeared on his face.
"Sometimes."
She smiled back.
"I'd like to see that."
As they walked side by side down the busy sidewalk, neither of them noticed they had unconsciously matched each other's pace.
For the first time since their contract marriage began, they weren't acting like strangers fulfilling an agreement.
They looked like an ordinary husband and wife enjoying a quiet afternoon together.
And neither of them realized just how natural it was beginning to feel.
