Chapter 8 – Bound by Vows
The first rays of sunlight filtered through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the luxurious bridal suite in Carter Manor. The room was unusually quiet, yet Olivia Reed had been awake long before dawn. She stood barefoot on the balcony, watching the golden light slowly spread across the gardens where she would soon become Ethan Carter's wife.
A gentle breeze brushed against her face.
She took a slow breath.
Today was the day.
In just a few hours, her life would change forever.
A soft knock interrupted her thoughts.
"Come in," she said.
The door opened, and Sophia entered with a warm smile, followed by four professional stylists carrying elegant makeup cases, garment bags, and jewelry boxes.
"Good morning, my beautiful bride," Sophia said cheerfully.
Olivia smiled nervously.
"I don't think I've ever been this anxious."
Sophia chuckled.
"Every bride says that."
The stylists immediately got to work. One carefully curled Olivia's long chestnut hair into soft waves before pinning part of it into an elegant updo decorated with tiny pearl hairpins. Another applied light makeup that enhanced her natural beauty instead of hiding it. A third carefully polished her nails while the last prepared the breathtaking wedding gown.
Hours passed quickly.
Finally, Sophia nodded toward the garment bag.
"I think it's time."
She slowly unzipped it.
The room instantly fell silent.
Inside hung an exquisite ivory wedding gown made of shimmering satin and delicate lace. Tiny crystals decorated the bodice like scattered stars, while the long flowing train seemed almost weightless. The elegant design perfectly balanced luxury and simplicity, making it impossible to look away.
Olivia stared at it.
"It's... beautiful."
Sophia smiled.
"It was designed especially for you."
The stylists carefully helped Olivia into the gown before fastening the tiny pearl buttons along the back.
When everything was finished, Sophia gently placed a cathedral-length veil over her hair.
"Now..."
She turned Olivia toward the mirror.
Olivia froze.
The young woman staring back at her looked like someone from a fairy tale.
The simple waitress who had struggled to pay hospital bills had disappeared.
Standing before the mirror was an elegant bride whose beauty seemed almost unreal.
Her flawless skin glowed beneath the morning sunlight.
Her soft curls framed her delicate face perfectly.
The ivory gown embraced her graceful figure before flowing elegantly to the floor.
Her sapphire-blue eyes shimmered with emotion.
For several long moments
No one spoke.
One of the makeup artists finally whispered,
"I've worked with actresses and supermodels..."
She shook her head slowly.
"...but I've never seen a bride this beautiful."
Another stylist smiled.
"Mr. Carter is going to forget how to breathe."
Everyone laughed softly.
Olivia blushed.
"I think you're exaggerating."
"We're not," Sophia replied honestly.
"You don't need expensive jewelry to shine."
She fastened the silver bracelet Ethan had given Olivia onto her wrist.
"The only thing missing..."
Sophia opened a small velvet box.
Inside rested the simple pearl earrings Ethan had sent the previous evening.
"They're perfect."
Olivia carefully put them on.
The bridal look was complete.
At that moment, there was another knock.
William Carter entered the room.
The cheerful smile on his face disappeared the instant he saw Olivia.
He stood completely still.
His eyes slowly filled with tears.
"Grandpa..."
Olivia said softly.
William smiled through his emotion.
"My dear..."
He walked toward her.
"You look exactly like the granddaughter I always wished for."
Olivia's own eyes became misty.
"Thank you."
William gently kissed her forehead.
"Ethan is a lucky man, whether he realizes it yet or not."
Sophia discreetly handed William a handkerchief.
"You promised you wouldn't cry."
"I know," William replied with a laugh.
"But look at her."
Even the staff smiled.
Outside Carter Manor, dozens of luxury cars began arriving one after another.
The city's most powerful businessmen, politicians, celebrities, and socialites stepped onto the red carpet while photographers crowded behind security barriers.
Camera flashes lit up the entrance.
"This is the wedding of the year."
"I heard half the city's billionaires are attending."
"I can't wait to see the bride."
Meanwhile, inside the glass pavilion, Ethan stood at the altar dressed in a perfectly tailored black tuxedo. His hair was neatly styled, and his calm expression revealed nothing of the thoughts running through his mind.
Daniel adjusted his tie.
"You look nervous, sir."
"I'm not."
"You've checked your watch six times in the last ten minutes."
Ethan glanced at him.
"I don't get nervous."
Daniel smiled knowingly.
"If you say so."
The musicians began tuning their instruments as guests filled every seat.
William quietly took his place beside Ethan.
"Ready?"
Ethan nodded once.
"As ready as I'll ever be."
The officiant stepped forward.
"Ladies and gentlemen..."
The conversations gradually faded.
"The ceremony will begin in just a few moments."
Outside the grand doors, Olivia stood with Sophia beside her.
She held a bouquet of white lilies in trembling hands.
"I suddenly feel like I can't do this," she admitted.
Sophia gently squeezed her shoulder.
"You can."
Olivia closed her eyes for a brief moment before taking a deep breath.
Then the first notes of the wedding march echoed through the hall.
The massive doors slowly began to open.
Every guest turned toward the entrance.
Ethan lifted his eyes.
And for the first time that day
He saw his bride
The moment Ethan looked toward the entrance, the rest of the world seemed to disappear.
Olivia stood beneath the grand archway, bathed in the soft morning light streaming through the glass pavilion. Her ivory gown shimmered with every step she took, the long train gliding gracefully across the white marble floor. The delicate veil framed her face like a cloud, making her look almost ethereal. The bouquet of white lilies rested gently in her hands, but it was her smile—nervous, sincere, and breathtaking—that stole every gaze in the room.
A hush fell over the guests.
No one spoke.
Even the photographers forgot to press the shutters on their cameras for a brief moment.
Then whispers began spreading through the hall.
"She's absolutely breathtaking."
"I've never seen a bride this beautiful."
"So that's Olivia Reed."
"Now I understand why Ethan Carter chose her."
"She looks like an angel."
Several women admired the elegance of her gown while others couldn't stop staring at her natural beauty. Even the men accompanying their wives looked away only after being nudged with playful elbows.
William Carter smiled proudly as he watched Olivia walk toward them.
His eyes glistened with happiness.
He silently thanked fate for bringing her into Ethan's life.
Ethan remained completely still.
His heartbeat slowed.
Then quickened again.
He had expected Olivia to look beautiful.
He had not expected her to leave him speechless.
For the first time in years, he couldn't think of business meetings, contracts, or shareholders.
All he could see was the woman walking toward him.
She looked nothing like the frightened young woman who had signed a marriage contract only days earlier.
She looked confident.
Graceful.
Extraordinary.
As Olivia reached the altar, their eyes met.
For several long seconds, neither of them spoke.
The officiant smiled knowingly.
"You may take the bride's hands."
Ethan gently reached for Olivia's hands.
His usually steady fingers hesitated for the briefest moment before touching hers.
They were warm.
Soft.
Olivia noticed the change in his expression and smiled shyly.
"So..." she whispered so only he could hear.
"How do I look?"
Ethan stared at her.
The words left his mouth before he could stop them.
"You look... beautiful."
Olivia blinked in surprise.
It was the first genuine compliment he had ever given her.
A faint blush spread across her cheeks.
"Thank you."
Daniel, standing beside Ethan as best man, couldn't help smiling.
He had never imagined hearing those words from his boss.
The officiant began the ceremony.
"We are gathered here today to witness the union of Ethan Carter and Olivia Reed."
The hall became silent once again.
The vows were simple but heartfelt.
When it was Ethan's turn, he looked into Olivia's eyes.
"I promise to respect you, stand beside you, and protect you for as long as this marriage lasts."
His words followed the contract.
Yet somehow they sounded deeper than that.
Olivia swallowed the sudden lump in her throat before speaking.
"I promise to respect you, trust you, and support you through every challenge we face together."
William smiled quietly.
Neither of them realized that they already sounded like a real married couple.
The officiant nodded.
"The rings."
Daniel handed Ethan the velvet box.
Ethan carefully removed Olivia's ring and gently slid it onto her finger.
"This ring is a symbol of the promise we make today."
Olivia then picked up Ethan's ring.
Her hands trembled slightly as she slipped it onto his finger.
"It is also a promise," she said softly.
The officiant looked at both of them with a warm smile.
"By the authority vested in me, I now pronounce you husband and wife."
Thunderous applause filled the pavilion.
Camera flashes exploded from every direction.
Guests rose to their feet.
William Carter was the first to clap, his face glowing with pride.
The officiant smiled.
"You may kiss your bride."
Olivia's heart skipped.
She looked at Ethan.
He leaned closer.
Very gently, he cupped her cheek.
"I hope this is alright," he whispered.
She gave a tiny nod.
"It's part of the ceremony."
Ethan smiled faintly.
Then he lowered his head and pressed a soft kiss against her lips.
It lasted only a few seconds.
Yet somehow...
It didn't feel like part of a contract.
When they pulled apart, Olivia found herself smiling without realizing it.
The applause grew even louder.
Outside the pavilion, reporters rushed to capture the newlyweds as they stepped onto the marble staircase together.
"Mr. Carter!"
"Mrs. Carter!"
"This way!"
"Please look at the cameras!"
Ethan instinctively placed one hand around Olivia's waist as they posed for photographs.
She looked up at him.
"You're smiling."
He looked slightly surprised.
"Am I?"
"A little."
"I suppose today is an exception."
She laughed softly.
"I'll remember that."
Across the city, inside his office, Victor Hayes watched the live broadcast on a large television screen
He stared coldly as Ethan and Olivia smiled for the cameras.
His assistant stood nearby.
"They make a convincing couple."
Victor switched off the television
"They won't stay happy for long."
He walked back to his desk and picked up Olivia's investigation file.
Only the first page had been completed.
It contained her name, age, and a recent photograph.
Victor ran his finger across the picture before closing the file.
"Congratulations, Mr. and Mrs. Carter."
His smile was as cold as ice.
"Enjoy your happiness while you still can."
Unaware of the danger already closing in around them, Ethan and Olivia climbed into the waiting Rolls-Royce as cheers echoed through the air.
The doors closed
The car pulled away.
And for the first time since signing the contract
They began their journey not just as business partners
But as husband and wife.
