Chapter 34 – The Charity Event
Morning sunlight bathed Carter Manor in a warm golden glow.
Unlike the tension that had filled the house over the past few weeks, today felt surprisingly peaceful.
Today was the Children's Future Foundation Charity Event.
Olivia stood in front of the bedroom mirror, adjusting the sleeves of a simple sky-blue dress. It wasn't as glamorous as the gown she had worn to the Whitmore Gala, but she preferred it.
"This feels more like me," she murmured.
A gentle knock came at the door.
"Come in."
Ethan stepped inside, already dressed in a navy suit.
For a brief moment, he simply looked at her.
Olivia noticed his silence and smiled.
"What?"
He shook his head with a smile.
"I don't think you own a dress that doesn't look beautiful on you."
She laughed softly.
"I think you're biased."
"I definitely am."
Her cheeks warmed as she looked away.
---
Downstairs, William smiled the moment he saw them together.
"My favorite couple is finally awake."
Olivia laughed.
"Grandpa."
"What? Am I wrong?"
Even Ethan smiled.
The cheerful atmosphere continued through breakfast until Daniel entered.
"The cars are ready."
Ethan nodded.
"Let's go."
---
The Children's Future Foundation occupied a beautiful building surrounded by gardens and playgrounds.
Dozens of children were already running around laughing while volunteers welcomed arriving guests.
As the Carter family's car stopped outside the entrance, applause broke out among the volunteers.
"Mrs. Carter!"
"We're so happy you're here!"
Olivia greeted everyone warmly, stopping several times to hug children who rushed toward her.
One little boy proudly held up a drawing.
"I made this for you!"
Olivia knelt to his level.
"For me?"
He nodded enthusiastically.
"It's you reading stories."
She accepted the drawing carefully.
"It's beautiful."
"I'm going to treasure it."
The little boy beamed with pride.
Ethan watched quietly from nearby.
Daniel smiled.
"She has a gift."
Ethan nodded.
"She makes people feel seen."
---
Inside the main hall, Adrian Brooks was already waiting.
When he noticed the Carters, he walked over politely.
"Mr. Carter."
"Mrs. Carter."
Ethan shook his hand.
"Good morning."
Adrian smiled.
"We're honored that both of you could attend."
Olivia looked around the beautifully decorated hall.
"You've done an amazing job."
"The volunteers deserve the credit."
Before they could continue talking, the event coordinator approached.
"Mrs. Carter."
"We're ready whenever you are."
She nodded.
"I'll be there in a moment."
---
The event officially began with children's performances.
The audience applauded enthusiastically as the young performers sang songs and recited poems about hope, kindness, and education.
Olivia watched every performance with genuine admiration.
"They're wonderful."
Ethan smiled.
"They're enjoying themselves because you're here."
She looked at him.
"You really think so?"
"I know so."
---
Soon, the host stepped onto the stage.
"Ladies and gentlemen..."
"It is our honor to welcome this year's Community Impact Award recipient..."
"Mrs. Olivia Carter!"
The hall erupted into applause.
Olivia took a deep breath before walking confidently onto the stage.
She smiled at the audience.
"Good afternoon, everyone."
"When I first accepted this invitation, I wondered what I could possibly say that these amazing children haven't already taught us."
Soft laughter spread through the room.
"I've learned that success isn't measured by how much we own."
"It's measured by how many lives we touch."
She looked toward the children seated in the front row.
"Every child deserves someone who believes in them."
"Sometimes..."
"One encouraging word..."
"One helping hand..."
"Or one person refusing to give up on them..."
"...can completely change their future."
The audience listened in complete silence.
"I stand here today not because I am extraordinary..."
"But because I was fortunate enough to meet extraordinary people who taught me the importance of kindness."
She smiled warmly.
"So let's continue believing in our children."
"Because when we invest in them..."
"...we invest in tomorrow."
Thunderous applause filled the hall.
Several teachers wiped tears from their eyes.
Even Ethan found himself smiling proudly.
Once again...
Olivia had spoken from her heart.
---
As she stepped down from the stage, children immediately surrounded her.
"Mrs. Carter!"
"Can we take pictures?"
"Can you sign my notebook?"
She laughed happily.
"Of course."
For nearly twenty minutes, she patiently greeted every child.
From a distance, Ethan watched with admiration.
Richard quietly walked over.
"I don't think I've ever met anyone more naturally suited to charity work."
Ethan smiled.
"Neither have I."
---
Across the hall, Victor Hayes watched everything unfold through a live video feed on his tablet.
His assistant stood beside him.
"She's becoming even more admired."
Victor's expression remained cold.
"Yes."
"And that makes what comes next even more devastating."
He tapped the screen once.
Miles away...
A hidden photographer inside the charity hall quietly received a message.
Begin Phase Two.
The photographer slowly raised his camera.
Just as Olivia turned to thank Adrian for organizing the event...
The shutter clicked.
Then again.
And again.
Several perfectly timed photographs captured Adrian handing Olivia flowers while they smiled during a brief conversation.
Completely innocent.
Completely harmless.
Yet...
In the wrong hands...
They could tell a very different story.
Outside the hall, dark clouds slowly gathered above the city.
A storm was coming.
Neither Ethan nor Olivia realized that Victor Hayes had already set his next trap into motion.
The event continued in a joyful atmosphere.
Children ran across the gardens, laughing as volunteers organized games and storytelling sessions.
Olivia spent nearly an hour moving from one group to another, listening to their dreams, signing notebooks, and posing for photographs.
Every child she spoke to left with a brighter smile.
Watching from nearby, Ethan couldn't help smiling himself.
Daniel quietly walked beside him.
"I've attended countless charity events."
"I've never seen children gather around someone like this."
Ethan folded his arms.
"Because she doesn't see them as charity cases."
"She sees them as children."
Daniel nodded.
"And they can tell."
---
Not far away, Adrian Brooks watched Olivia reading a story beneath a large oak tree.
Several dozen children sat around her, completely captivated.
One little girl suddenly raised her hand.
"Mrs. Carter?"
"Yes?"
"When you were little..."
"...did you always know you'd help people?"
Olivia smiled gently.
"No."
"I didn't."
"I just knew how wonderful it felt whenever someone was kind to me."
The little girl tilted her head.
"So you wanted other people to feel that too?"
Olivia nodded.
"Exactly."
The children applauded happily.
Adrian looked away for a moment.
Victor's words echoed in his mind.
"The closer you get... the easier the final move becomes."
His chest tightened with guilt.
"This isn't right," he whispered to himself.
---
As the afternoon came to an end, the organizers gathered everyone for a group photograph.
"Everyone together!" the photographer called.
Teachers...
Volunteers...
Children...
Donors...
And special guests all stood together.
Olivia was placed in the center beside several children.
Ethan stood beside her with one arm gently around her waist.
Adrian was asked to stand on Olivia's other side as one of the foundation's sponsors.
The photographer smiled.
"Perfect."
"Everyone look this way."
Flash!
Another photograph.
Flash!
A third.
Then, just as the children began cheering...
One little boy stumbled over his untied shoelace.
He nearly fell.
Without thinking, Adrian reached forward to steady him.
At the same moment, Olivia bent down to help.
From a distance...
The hidden photographer captured the exact instant Adrian's hand appeared to be holding Olivia's arm.
Click.
Another photograph.
The angle was perfect.
Completely misleading.
Exactly what Victor wanted.
---
As the event came to a close, the chairman of the foundation walked onto the stage once more.
"Today has been a tremendous success."
"Thanks to everyone's generosity, we've raised enough money to build three new community libraries."
The audience erupted into applause.
The chairman smiled warmly.
"We would especially like to thank Mrs. Olivia Carter."
"Her speech inspired many additional donations today."
Olivia looked genuinely surprised.
"I'm honored."
The chairman handed her a bouquet of white lilies.
"You've given these children hope."
She accepted the flowers with gratitude.
"They've given me hope too."
---
Outside the foundation...
The Carters prepared to leave.
Several reporters waited near the entrance, but unlike previous events, today's questions focused on the charity.
"Mrs. Carter!"
"What inspired your passion for helping children?"
She smiled.
"I believe every child deserves an opportunity to dream."
Another reporter asked Ethan,
"Mr. Carter, how do you feel seeing your wife receive so much admiration?"
He looked at Olivia before answering.
"I'm proud of her."
"Not because of the awards..."
"But because she never changes, whether cameras are watching or not."
Olivia looked at him with a grateful smile.
Their hands naturally found each other.
The cameras captured the heartfelt moment.
---
Across town...
Victor Hayes received dozens of photographs from the hidden photographer.
He studied each one carefully.
Most were harmless.
Then...
He found it.
The photograph showing Adrian reaching toward Olivia from the perfect angle.
A slow smile spread across his face.
"There you are."
His assistant looked over his shoulder.
"It doesn't actually show anything."
Victor nodded.
"It doesn't have to."
He handed the photograph back.
"Crop Ethan out."
"Release it anonymously tomorrow morning."
The assistant hesitated.
"What if people question its authenticity?"
Victor smiled coldly.
"They won't."
"People believe what they want to believe."
He walked toward the window overlooking the city.
"And by the time the truth catches up..."
"...the damage will already be done."
---
Back at Carter Manor, the evening was peaceful.
Olivia and Ethan sat together on the balcony, enjoying the cool breeze after a long day.
Olivia rested her head lightly against his shoulder.
"Today was wonderful."
"It was."
"I'm glad you came with me."
Ethan smiled.
"There wasn't anywhere else I'd rather be."
She looked up at him.
"Thank you... for always believing in me."
He gently brushed a loose strand of hair behind her ear.
"There will never be a reason not to."
Neither of them noticed the storm clouds gathering once again above the city.
Somewhere in the darkness...
A carefully edited photograph had already been scheduled for publication.
By sunrise...
The next chapter of Victor Hayes' plan would begin.
