Frost’s POV
I watched the pups run around excitedly. Crops were doing well and the animals were healthy again. Things were going well for the pack even after the incident with Leon. I had been staying at the pack house since waking up and being told of the secrets that the fae queen and her mate had kept from me. I reached up to touch my hair and twirled some of it around my fingers. So I was a rare dragon, it made me the best choice for the throne and my brother had taken offense to that. I was nearly kept from being born over something so stupid. I still wasn’t sure how to process any of this and had chosen to simply ignore the entire situation for the moment.
Levi and Sebastian were giving me space so I had time to think. They had met my soulmate, the one who should have loved me and instead rejected me. They knew encountering him again had caused me pain. I didn’t know for certain but I suspected he hadn’t liked that I was with a rival pack. Or maybe he just didn’t like others touching what he considered his. I don’t know but his attempt to claim me as his mate had caused a horrible heartache that made me question actually trying out a relationship.
When I noticed one of the pack approach me I tensed, wondering why they were coming to see me. They didn’t look ill so it wasn’t for medicine. Hopefully Levi wasn’t calling me, I wasn’t ready to face him.
“Lady Frost, I have a message for you.” The wolf said handing me a letter.
“Oh, thank you. Who is it from?”
“I’m not certain but I was working at the market today and a child approached me asking for you.”
I excitedly open it knowing it had to be from one of the children of the family I aided. Inside the letter was a message from each of the family. The children were doing well, excited for school and spending time with their friends. The fathers were doing well, one still working and the other still caring for the children. Seeing that one of the mothers was pregnant I couldn’t help but laugh. One day I hope to have many children as well. That thought causes me to pause and I wonder what Levi and Sebastian thought of that. I know Levi needs an heir but does he only want one child? What about Sebastian?
“Lady Frost?”
I look up at the wolf startled, I hadn’t even realized he was still present.
“Yes, was there something else?”
He nodded before pointing causing me to look where he directed. I tense at the sight of Sandalphon.
“He has been wandering our grounds for some time. I thought to bring him here and ask you speak with him. Some have been…rather uncomfortable with his aimless pacing. The pack does not know him as they do you.”
I sigh and motion Sandalphon over. The wolf thanks me as he turns to leave.
“You wanted to speak to me?” I ask the dragon, my brother.
“I apologize if what I told you has made you uncomfortable. It was not my intention to ever do you harm.”
He takes a seat beside me, looking ahead at the pups playing.
“I know, I could see it in your eyes when you spoke. What is it like…to be up there?” I ask looking up at the sky.
“There is no greater feeling for one of our kind. The sky is our home. The air up there better for us to, cleaner and filled with an energy the air down here lacks. Have you truly never flown?”
I nod sadly, trying not to fall into a panic as mention of flying often caused.
“For me flying only means falling.”
He stares at me for a moment before standing. I look at him curious if he was going to leave only to find him stripping off his shirt. In shock I watch as wings of his dragon form extended from his back and he held out a hand towards me.
“Come, I will show you what it means to fly. I know you fear falling and the pain it caused when you were young. If we are to fall though I can assure you we won’t, I will take the pain.”
I hesitate but the temptation was to great. I take his hand and find myself pulled to my feet and swept into his arms within moments. Giving me no time to second guess my choice he takes to the air. I wrap my arms around his neck tightly afraid and feeling my heart race in a panic.
“Close your eyes sister. Just take in the air that those bound to the earth cannot feel. When you’re comfortable you may open them.”
I shut my eyes tightly and grip his neck even tighter. I feel the wind brush through my hair but don’t open my eyes. He flies for so long that I can’t image he isn’t tired. When he stops I peak a glance at our surroundings only to have my eyes widen in shock. We had been flying so long the sun was setting. The sight of it from here was breathtaking. How had I ever gone without such a sight? How would I continue to move forward knowing that without him I could never see it again.
“Beautiful isn’t it?”
I can only nod, the sight leaving my speechless.
“Shall we stay until it fully sets?”
I nod again and watch as the sun lays to rest to let the moon awaken. When the light vanishes I look up at Sandalphon.
“Thank you.”
He has only the smallest of smiles but looks happy.
“I am glad you enjoyed this sister. One day I hope we may fly together and that you can allow your mates to experience this.”
That thought caused excitement to course through my veins. If I could manage to fly I could share this with Levi and Sebastian. I want to share this with them. Returning home, I found both men waiting for me.
“Enjoy yourself?” Sebastian asked, not knowing how much flying terrified me.
“It was amazing. I was to scared to open my eyes in the beginning but when I did I saw the most amazing sight!”
A hand touches my shoulder and I turn to look at my brother. He leans forward to place a kiss on my forehead.
“I will return tomorrow sister. We can fly again.”
I nod, wanting to experience that again. As he left I turn to Levi and Sebastian and found myself pulled into familiar arms.
“I worried when I heard you went flying. I feared Sandalphon took you without asking. I never wanted to see you as panicked as you were that day.” Levi whispered as his arms tightened around me.
“Thank you for worrying about me.” I whisper back returning the embrace.
“I feel like I missed something. Everything ok?”
When separate and I explain my past to Sebastian. I find myself embraced again but this time by the human. Our contact only ending as my stomach makes its needs known. Sandalphon and I had been out so long that I’d missed lunch. The two pull me along to feed me. The pack had prepared stew for dinner and were in the middle of eating when we arrived. It was delicious and I found myself wishing I could cook this well.
“So I received a letter from those families we helped.” I tell Sebastian who lights up at the news.
“How are they doing? I saw them recently but I always worry. Things can be hard when you’re injured like that and have a large family to care for.”
I shake my head with a small smile.
“Millie is pregnant.”
Sebastian smiled.
“I’ll have to tell congratulations. I always wanted a large family of my own.” He turned to Levi. “What about you? Did you ever think of having kids and if you did how many?”
“I always found the idea of a big family interesting but I stopped thinking about it when I learned my soulmate couldn’t have them.”
Both looked at me and I shrug with a smile.
“I’m an only child and was kind of sad not to have siblings. Having a lot of kids would be nice but I know in the end it isn’t just my decision.”
Both looked pleased by my answer. Once finished eating I say I’m going to turn in for the night. I felt relaxed and happy after the flight and wanted to just lay down and bask in the feeling. Levi walks me home while Sebastian stayed behind to talk to Samantha when he spotted her.
