Chapter Five

SABOTAGED Amanda POV Living in the bewildered fortress wasn’t easy. I had to do chores with my hands cuffed; maltreatment from senior maids was becoming too much, but I survived nevertheless. After days in the fortress, I found out that Nathaniel’s personal assistant was named Sophie, and she was into him. The maids gossiped a lot, so I had access to all the information in the fortress. Sophie had also been brought here as a slave just like me, but she had somehow been saved by him and ended up as his assistant. They claimed she wore sexually attractive clothes to his office just so he could feel lustful and have her just once, as she was massively obsessed with him. No wonder she developed a sudden hatred for me when he groaned “Damn” that day. What was more surprising was the fact that Nathaniel had rejected seventeen ladies who were beautiful and stronger than myself. They were all elites in their field, but to him, they weren’t fit for him. Sophie was undergoing countless struggles trying to make him hers, but she always lost it. “Don’t speak to him, ever,” she had instructed, and immediately she swung me out of his office. I understand the pain, but I dare not say such if I wanted to live. “Why isn’t this place clean?” Nathaniel questioned, looking at the blood stains on the floor. “I don’t know how that got there. I just cleaned your study some minutes ago,” I responded, astonished by the blood stains. “Some minutes ago?” His hands gripped my neck, choking me. I could see it in his face, his clenched jaw, his tense muscle, his smirk which eliminated everything in its presence. “I’m sorry, I will clean it up right now,” I stammered as the cuffs clashed, creating short metallic sounds. “I don’t like seeing blood that I didn’t spill in my study. If you know you spilled someone’s else blood, you clean it right up before I arrive,” he spat angrily. His red eyes began to glow, giving out something sinister in the depths. “I’m sorry, this is a sabotage, trust me,” I stuttered. He released his grip from my neck and clasped his hands in a way to protect his face. “Clean that up fast… I won’t want you dying in my arms,” he let out as he walked out of the study. I grabbed a towel and began to sway it, cleaning the blood stains before wiping it off with a mop. Done with the task, I headed out. He watched me walk out of the study, but he didn’t have the guts to look at me straight in the eyes any more. I could smell it, the guilt that was eating him up inside even though he didn’t show it. As I reached the maid chamber, I took hold of my bunk, which had the softest bed in the room. With the thought of Nathaniel’s inner beast and the blood stain running through my mind, I wondered who would have sabotaged me. It couldn’t be Sophie, as she had been sent to the warfront to battle with the sinister serpent pack, who refused to give up their territory and join theirs. No maid was allowed into the study except I and the chief maid, Caira, who cared for me like a toddler. As I kept thinking, I drifted off into sleep. The scent of burnt wool woke me up from my slumber. I tried rubbing my eyes but I couldn’t. My cuffs had suddenly been tugged into the iron of the bed above me, making it impossible. I managed to wipe my eyes with my arms for clearer vision, but I regretted doing that. Upon opening my eyes, the sight of the beds opposite mine in flames made me scream. The room was on fire, and there was no way I could escape it. “Help me!” I cried out. The flames kept kindling, and I could picture myself burning up with the cuffs. Was this really how I was going to die? Was I never going to know true love “Mary, are you in there?” Annabel’s voice brought my spirit back up. “Yes, I am here,” I cried out. “I’ll go get help,” she yelled. The sound of her footstep was a bit relieving, as I believed I would soon be saved. Minutes passed, and the fire intensified. Annabel was nowhere to be found, and I was on the verge of losing consciousness. I needed help and was quick. “Help me… save me from this fire,” I cried out, but I didn’t see, nor did I hear anyone. The bed was beginning to lose patience as its temperature began to increase. The one on top mine was already in flames, and the temperature was really on the high side. My eyes had started to close up when a ray of red light crossed my sight. It was different than that of the fire; it was much more intense and sinister. “I’ll get you out of it right now.” I heard it’s domineering and cold voice hush me. Within seconds, my cuffs were cut, and I was lying on its arm. Drained after inhaling a lot of smoke and soot, I passed out in its arm. “I’m glad you’re saved.” Caira’s voice vibrated in my ears as I came to my senses. The entire maids all looked at me with pity as I coughed up smoke from my mouth. “What happened?” I asked in anxiety. They all looked at the maid chambers, which had been transformed into ashes. “Someone set the maids chamber up in flames,” Caira said. “Where’s Annabel?” I inquired. They began to cry softly. “We got a note that you were trying to kill yourself, and Annabel rushed there trying to save you from doing that,” Caira explained. “Where is she?” I began panicking as tears cascaded down their cheeks. Caira pointed at a tree to the far left. I stood up immediately, heading there to see what was the matter with Annabel. The scent of blood got me fused up. I began to move fast towards the tree. She can’t be dead, not when we were starting to get closer to each other. I fell on my knees upon reaching the tree. Right before stood something beyond my reach, a catastrophe I couldn’t prevent.
