Night knocked on the door of the day, bringing with it all my fears and all my hopes, tangled together in a knot I couldn't unravel, squeezing my chest like a vice. I couldn't sleep. Not for a single second. I spent most of the time curled up on the small pale pink velvet bench — so delicate, so completely out of place — set beneath the window. Knees pulled to my chest, arms wrapped around my legs, eyes fixed on the night sky as it shifted imperceptibly in color while the hours slipped by. What did any of this have to do with me?
