CALLUM I watched Lila’s stepmother cut through the room like a bird of prey, sharp eyes locked on her target. One second Lila was standing there trying to keep herself together after everything that had already happened tonight, and the next the woman had her by the arm. “We’re leaving. Now!” Her voice cut across the music and chatter. People nearby glanced over, curious, but no one stepped in. Of course they didn’t. No one ever wanted to get involved in family drama. Lila stumbled half a step as the woman pulled her along. She didn’t fight it, though. She just went with it, shoulders tight, head slightly bowed. Something inside my chest twisted hard.
