Selene finally managed to pull away from Darius. Without wasting another second, she turned and ran after Eryx. She spotted him ahead, walking away with Kael, his best friend. She opened her mouth to call out to him, but stopped when she heard Kael’s words. "Why did you lie, Eryx? Why didn’t you tell her you saved her? Now she’ll think the one who truly saved her was Darius.'' ''What does it matter?'' Eryx replied, his tone heavy. ''It doesn’t matter if it was me or Darius. We both know that won’t change anything. Selene loves him so much, and I won’t try to come between them.'' Kael sighed deeply. ''Eryx… you’re only hurting yourself even more by doing this. You know, it’s still a few days before her 18th birthday. We don’t know if she’ll even be mated to him or…'' He trailed off. ''Or someone else.'' Eryx finished for him. He shook his head. ''I don’t think I can do this anymore, Kael. No matter what I do, no matter how hard I try, Selene will never notice me. I think it’s time I give up. It’s time I move on. At least that would make things easier, just in case she gets mated to Darius.'' He turned to leave, but Kael quickly stepped in front of him. ''And what if it’s you? What if you end up being her mate, not Darius? No one can tell how the goddess plans things.'' Kael shrugged. ''You might actually be her mate. We don’t know.'' ''Well, if that happens, I’ll have to reject her.'' Eryx said quietly. ''Her dream is to be with Darius, and I won’t try to come between that.'' Selene’s heart shattered at his words. Tears rolled silently down her cheeks. ''No…'' She whispered, barely audible. She wanted to run to him, but just as she took a step forward, someone grabbed her hand. ''Selene.'' Darius’s voice was low behind her. Selene shut her eyes briefly, trying to steady herself, then reopened them and turned to him. Before she could speak, Darius pulled her close and kissed her. Selene froze instantly. Unfortunately, the scene was witnessed by both Eryx and Kael. Eryx’s heart broke even further. The sight only confirmed everything he had just said. Selene’s heart belonged to only one person — Darius. He stood no chance. His eyes filled with deep sadness and pain as he stared at them. Unable to watch any longer, he turned and walked away. Kael shook his head, glancing at Selene and Darius, then hurried after his friend. The moment Eryx turned away, Selene shoved Darius back hard and slapped him across the face with all her strength. ''How dare you kiss me?!'' She yelled, her eyes blazing with rage. Darius staggered slightly, clearly stunned. The Selene he knew would have been overjoyed by that kiss. She never would have dared raise a hand against him. But this woman standing in front of him… he barely recognized her anymore. ''Selene, what the hell has gotten into you?'' He demanded, confusion and irritation mixing in his voice. ''Did falling into the river change your mentality or something? I can’t believe you’re saying and doing all this. What happened to the Selene I know?'' ''That Selene is dead.'' She thought bitterly. ''You killed her.'' Instead, she said coldly. ''I’m warning you, Darius. Never come close to me again.'' Her voice dripped with venom. She glared at him with pure hatred before turning and running after Eryx, leaving Darius standing there, shocked and utterly confused. Selene chased after Eryx all the way back to the pack house. She was about to call out to him when a woman’s voice rang out. ''Eryx!'' Selene turned her head and saw a lady standing a few meters away. She was strikingly beautiful and elegant, her bright smile radiant, making her even more breathtaking. Her long hair flowed gracefully down her back. Selene frowned. The woman’s face looked strangely familiar, but she couldn’t quite remember where she had seen her. The woman hurried toward Eryx. When she noticed how drenched he was, worry instantly filled her face. ''What happened, Eryx? Why are you so wet?'' She asked, her voice full of concern. ''It’s nothing, Lyra. I’m fine.'' Eryx replied calmly. Lyra. The name hit Selene like a thunderbolt. A memory from her past life flashed through her mind. After Eryx’s banishment, a woman had stormed into the palace with tears streaming down her face. She had accused both Darius and Selene of being unjust, hurling curses and insults at them while begging them to bring Eryx back. She had sworn she would make them pay. Darius had ordered the guards to throw her out. Later, Selene had learned that the woman was Eryx’s childhood best friend. She had been deeply in love with him for years, doing everything she could to win his heart. But Eryx had only ever seen her as a good friend. That woman was Lyra. The realization struck Selene hard. As she watched them now, it was painfully obvious. The way Lyra looked at him, the genuine worry in her eyes — she was in love with him. ''Come on, let’s get you changed.'' Lyra said softly. She took Eryx’s hand and gently led him inside the pack house. Selene’s chest tightened. She immediately wanted to follow them, but someone suddenly grabbed her arm. She spun around, ready to lash out, thinking it was Darius again. But it wasn’t. It was Vera. ''Selene.'' Vera said, her face full of concern. ''Vera.'' Selene muttered. Flashes of the past flooded her mind — Vera’s smirk in the dungeon, her cruel words, the way she had stood beside Darius as Selene lay dying. Her heart ached sharply at the memory. If she hadn’t lived through the betrayal and death, she never would have believed that the girl standing in front of her— her supposed best friend— would one day help destroy her. But now she knew everything. And even though it still hurt terribly, Selene refused to be fooled again. She would not fall for Vera’s fake concern. Not this time. Not in this life.
