Chapter Three: The photograph

1262 Words
The next day, after the morning assembly things were just starting to get back together the way it was. At least that is what I thought. Not knowing that was only the beginning of the end. So after our classes and activities, mmesoma had to go home early to be able to meet up with her doctor's appointment. So after school I saw the same book I promised Mmesoma I won't touch. And believe me when I tried not to touch it, but there are just some that are too tempting to resist. And believe me i tried to resist, i did everything humanly possible not to touch that book. But still my curiosity got the better of me. So as I slowly step towards the book step by step. When i got to the book i wasn't sure if i was to open it or just take it home or even just put it in my bag. So eventually I decided to do something. I decided to just open one page of the book. So I did. I saw something I never expected. The page I opened was totally empty except one thing That one thing that was inside is what surprised me. And one thing that was inside is the least thing I expected to be inside. It was a photo of my cousin. But there was something that surprised me the most about the photo. In the photo it was not any cousin of mine, it was a dead cousin. Dead to me at least but not dead in real life. Even though in a way I wish he was dead. And some others who may want so. But we don't get everything we want. And personally I don't really have anything against him, I just don't like him. But I know so many people who have something against him. And those people also wish he was dead too. He is not a victim of the saying that innocent people get hurt. He is one of the reasons innocent people get hurt. And he deserves to be hurt in any and every possible way. Because the cousin of mine was a Menace. In fact he was a total mess. A criminal in other words. And yes we are related. Both we are two different people in two different worlds and with two different characters. Because I like peace and he doesn't. But something was confusing me. How did Mmesoma know about him? What does she have to do with him? What is their relationship with each other? What secret are they hiding? Does she know that he is my cousin? And why didn't she want to tell me about him? All these questions were in my mind and were seeking answers. so i just took the picture and placed it back in the book and went straight home. A few minutes after I got home I received a message from Mmesoma. And it said, "I think I left my notebook in school.” "The one that you promised me that you will not open.” "Okay.” I replied. "Tell me you didn't open it.” She said, "I didn't.” I replied. "Are you sure?” She asked. Then I said to her, "Nope, not at all.” "How are you not sure? I don't understand.” She said, "What don't you understand?” I asked. "I don't understand how you are not sure whether you open the book or not.” She said, "No, I'm sure.” I said. "Ohh you are sure you didn't open the book.” She said, "No ooo, I'm sure I did.” I said. "You are sure you opened the book.” She said, "Yes.” I said. "So you opened the book?” She asked. "Yes.” I said. "But you said you didn't open the book.” She said, "Yes.” I said. "So you lied to me.” She said, "No, I didn't.” I said. "Yes, you did.” She said, "No I didn't.” I said. "Why are you lying now?” She asked. "No I'm not lying to you.” I said. "Why did you lie before?” She asked. "I didn't.” I said. "Okay, explain to me how you didn't lie.” She said, "Okay.” I said then replied. "How I didn't lie? I didn't lie because you told me to tell you that I didn't touch the book and I did.” "So how am I lying?” I asked. "Ohh.” She said, "Yeah.” I replied. "But you know what I was talking about, so why didn't you go straight to the point with your answer?” She said, "Nothing.” I said. "Whatever you see, don't believe it totally.” She said, "Okay.” I said. "What did you see in the book?” She asked. "Nothing much really.” I said. "Really?” She asked. "Yeah.” I said. Are you sure? She asked. "Yes, but except for one thing.” I said. "Which is what?” She asked. "I saw something.” I said. "What did you see?” She asked. "I saw a picture of my cousin in the Notebook.” I said. "Is that all you saw?” She asked. "Yes, is there anything you wanted me to see?” I asked. "No.” She said, Then I asked. "How did you get that picture?” "How did you get to know him?” "What is your relationship with him?” Then she said to me, "Like I said , you will know when the time is right.” I stared at her message for a few seconds and continued to read it over and over again. Something about the way she said it didn't feel right. It felt like they had to be more to it. It was not only just that she knew my cousin. But it was the way she seemed and acted as if she knew things about him that even I didn't know. Like she knew him far better than I ever did. I had a lot of questions on my mind I wanted to ask,but before I could type any other thing, another message appeared. Mmesoma is typing... Then it disappeared. A few seconds later, it appeared again. Mmesoma is typing... Then it disappeared once more. I stared at the screen, waiting. Finally, another message came through. "Please don't ask me about him again." I frowned, worrying why she would say something like that. Because that wasn't an answer. That message only made me more suspicious and curious. I was about to reply when another notification appeared. This time, it wasn't a message. It was a photograph. I opened it. My heart stopped for a second. It was another picture of my cousin. But this time, he wasn't alone. Standing beside him was someone I knew. Someone I had never expected to see in the same photograph as him. In fact it was the last person I expected to see of all the people in the world. It was Mmesoma. I stared at the picture, completely frozen for a few minutes. And that was not all noticed, then I noticed something else. Something unexpected. The photograph wasn't old looking at all. In fact it looked like it had been taken recently. Like very, very, very recently. And suddenly, one question became louder than all the others in my head: Why had Mmesoma lied to me about knowing him?
