Chapter 2 “Um, what is wrong with you two? It is supposed to be a fun day, but it feels like someone died. Snap out of it!” Daphne felt as if she was drowning in the backseat. Why couldn’t Sky just stop “waiting for her mate” and be with Evan, temporary or not, Evan is gorgeous! Just give it up and have fun! Daphne had decided she would not wait any longer. She wasn’t going to sit around wasting her time longing for a mate she didn’t know. She would wait for her mate for the physical aspect but why couldn’t she have fun? She had recently met someone who was charming, handsome, and fun. Most important of all, he is here and here now. She didn’t bother to tell Sky because she didn’t feel like having a lecture about waiting for a mate. She would try to convince her to wait till the ball, give it a chance. “Nope I will not,” Daphne said out loud. “What won’t you do?” Evan asked raising an eyebrow. “Oh, um nothing. I was thinking about the ball and if I found my mate, would I leave right away with him.”  “Oh, ok.” He answered eyeing her suspiciously. Who was that girl? Why hadn’t he gone over and talked to her? Her chocolate and strawberry smell had paralyzed him where he stood. Could she really be his mate? Who was that guy with her? Was he, her boyfriend? Just the thought made him angry. Those blue eyes of hers called to him. That perfect little body in that tight little dress made his member twitch just thinking about it. He would see her again. He would find her. As Evan pulled in the driveway, Sky stole a glance at his handsome face. She couldn’t deny that she was attracted to him. They had dropped Daphne off first leaving them to make small talk on the way home. As he put the car in park, Sky felt like something was wrong. “Are you ok?” Evan looked like he was contemplating something. “I’m ok. Sky if I were your mate, would you be happy about it?” She knew this was coming. She had felt the shift at the mall when Caleb was watching her. She sighed, “of course, I would be happy. You are one of my best friends.” He leaned in tucking a loose strand of hair behind her ear. “I feel the same,” he said leaning closer. “Sky you mean so much to me.” She could feel his warm breath on her cheek. He leaned a bit closer causing their lips to almost touch. She turned away and pretended to look out the window. Sensing the change in her he leaned back in his seat. “I’m sorry,” she muttered looking down at her hands. “You know I am waiting for my mate. I hope it is you, but I need to know first.” She tried to hide the tears threatening to run down her cheeks. She turned opening her door. “Sky wait, I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have done that. I guess I felt a little jealous seeing the way Caleb was looking at you today. Sky he is not a good guy. Promise me you will stay away from him.” “I don’t even know him. Goodnight, Evan,” was all she said as she stood up shutting the door behind her. Walking up the steps, she heard Evan’s car roar as he backed out and sped off down the street. Sneaking in, she could hear her parents in the living room. She quietly went up the stairs to her room. As she dropped her bags on the floor, she couldn’t help but think of Caleb. Something about the way he looked at her made her melt. Just thinking about him was making her core tingle. “What is wrong with me? I am waiting for my mate. Why can’t I stop thinking about Caleb?” As she plopped down on her bed, her thoughts drifted to Evan. They had been friends since they were little pups. She hated hurting him but while he would always have a place in her heart, she just didn’t feel that way about him. He was hoping she was his mate, he would be so happy, but she didn’t think he was. She just didn’t feel it could be.   The mate’s ball is in two days. Two days and he may have his mate. Caleb couldn’t help the restlessness he was feeling. There was something so familiar about her. Her very essence seemed to haunt him. He could not get her out of his head. He was going to talk to her but the future Alpha with her was sending warning glares his way. He did not want a fight with an allied pack. At least that guy seemed protective of her. Thor was on edge more than Caleb. He wanted that girl. He kept whining and telling Caleb to let him go find her. The recent rouge attacks, the moon approaching its full self, and the Mate’s Ball were all contributing to his unease. He was shorter tempered than usual and felt as if the simplest thing could set him off. “We could go for a run?” Thor suggested. “It would give us a chance to let off some steam.” “Ok, I think we will.” With that Caleb stripped off his clothes, tossing them on the park bench along his path. Shifting to reveal his huge black as night wolf, Thor. Thor was majestic and quite a sight to behold. His emerald, green eyes glowed against the dark night. Running towards the forest at full speed, his huge paws thundered across the ground. The lake. His solitude. The place where the deep blue eyes that mirrored the sky. Those eyes called to him. It had to be his mate. Why couldn’t he see more than her eyes? “Maybe she is not eighteen yet. If she isn’t eighteen, the moon goddess would not let us see all of her.” Thor sounded annoyed at having to only see her eyes. He wanted to see the person who possessed those eyes. That girl would be his. Cherub heard the door slam. She knew he was restless. Being an alfa, he needed his mate. Caleb is her only child. She knew what was at stake for him. More than Caleb did. His wolf Thor needed his mate, the same way her mate had needed her. The mates usually brought out the compassion and the good in an Alpha. Dean, her mate, had always been hardheaded. He was known for being difficult and sometimes ruthless. When he met her, he changed. Yes, he was still stubborn and sometimes downright difficult, but he now had more compassion for others. He had had plenty of girlfriends before meeting her, but he had never slept with any of them. She couldn’t help the pang of jealousy in her chest as she thought about the one who had refused to give up Dean. One she-wolf, Veronica, had refused to accept her as Luna or Dean’s mate. She was obsessed and refused to stop trying to lure Dean to her. She was banished after she was overheard planning to kill Cherub. Banished instead of killed, Cherub thought to herself. She let out a sigh as she watched her only son, in wolf form, disappear into the trees. She knew girls followed him all over. She knew he had no interest in anyone but his mate. Caleb was more like her in that respect. He did not want to date anyone or be with anyone but his destined mate. He had never dated anyone despite the encouragement from Dash and Gideon. Those two always meant well but sometimes they needed babysitting. She scrunched up her nose at the thought. Dash had always been the wild one, Gideon went along with for the fun of it and to watch him get in trouble. She knew above all they were loyal, honest, and honored Caleb’s authority and position in the pack. She knew Gideon would be a great Beta when the time came and Dash? Well, he will be a great gamma. He was running so fast across the dew-covered grass that a small mist seemed to follow him. He reached the lake much faster than he expected. Trying to slow his heartbeat, he inched closer to the edge of the water. Please show me my mate. Please. Was it possible to be in love with someone if you have only seen their eyes? Slowly he peered into the mirror-like surface of the lake. His eyes looked back at him. His eyes glowed the emerald green that they glowed when he was in wolf form. He wanted to see her eyes, those amazing blue eyes. Where were they tonight? Normally they appeared quickly. His wolf whimpered, maybe they were gone. Maybe they would never see those eyes again, or worse, maybe he had imagined them. Slowly the water next to his image became distorted. Ripples breaking the smooth glass-like surface of the lake, gave him hope. Watching anxiously, he smiled to himself as the beautiful sapphire blue eyes began to materialize. This time there was more. Looking back at him was the most beautiful chocolate brown wolf he had ever seen. Her eyes glowing a mystical sapphire blue seemed to make his heart race more. His wolf let out an excited yip and wagged his tail like a whip. Caleb could not remember the last time Thor had been this happy. “It’s her! It’s our mate!” he howled loudly. Caleb knew he was right. Her silky fur and dark chocolate color accentuated her eyes. She seemed to call out to his very soul. Slowly, her image began to fade. Caleb echoed Thor’s sadness as they both cried out, “Please don’t go…”
