Chapter 6

The Next Day…            Sky woke up worried. Was he here? Did she really find her mate last night? It was then she felt it. A heavy arm draped across her mid-section. His scent filled her senses with joy. It was all real! She had found him, and he was here, in her house, in her room, in her bed! They hadn’t done anything but talk last night. She was still wearing her old t-shirt and sweats. She had given Caleb a pair of her father’s basketball shorts. She had snuck him up the stairs and into her room. She had given him a towel before sneaking into her parents’ room to get him some shorts. She had felt a sense of disappointment as he put the shorts on. She rolled over carefully and inhaled his scent. Peppermint and pine.            She hadn’t been sure what to do. She didn’t want to leave without him. After walking and talking, they ended up on her front steps. He offered to go to his hotel, but she asked him to stay. She had just found him; she didn’t want him to go. He was going to sleep on the couch as he didn’t want her to be nervous. They had sat on her bed talking for hours, that is where they both fell asleep.            She brushed a few loose strands of hair away from his face. He woke up catching her gaze. He flashed her his handsome smile, “Good morning, my beautiful girl.”            “Good morning handsome mate,” she answered sleep still evident in her voice.            She heard footsteps outside her door signaling her parents were up, or so she thought. Her door burst open revealing Evan. He froze at the sight before him. A low warning growl came from deep in his chest. His canines began to elongate as did his claws.            “Evan! Stop!” Sky shrieked jumping to her feet. From behind her, Caleb’s own growl answered Evan’s. His sounded more dangerous, more ferocious. His eyes were turning a deeper green. Thor was scratching at the surface. “Let me out! I’ll kill him!” he thundered.            “Evan! Stop!” Sky shrieked. “He is my mate!” She put her hand on Caleb’s arm to calm him. The small bristles of fur along his muscles scratched her smooth skin. She could feel him tense with every passing second.            “Enough!” boomed a voice from the hall. They both stopped surprised at the power in the voice.            “Daddy!” Sky yelled.            “Evan, downstairs now! I will sort this out.” Lee Masters is Beta to Alpha Jake. He was known to be fair but tough. He was not happy to have been woken up by two males growling in his beloved daughter’s bedroom. “Sky, what is going on here?” He asked, annoyance still evident in his voice.            “Daddy, I found my mate! Last night! Aria and I were restless, so I shifted and went for a run. Aria wanted to swim so we headed to mirror lake. Caleb stumbled upon us and, well, Daddy he’s, my mate. I have already accepted him, and he has accepted me!” She was nervous but the excitement in her eyes made them sparkle. Her father smiled.            “Well now, my little girl has found her mate. Caleb, congratulations. You better make sure you take good care of my daughter.”            “I will. I will cherish her always.” Caleb replied looking at Sky.            “Lee Masters, get out of the way.” Isabelle Masters, Sky’s mother had been standing there listening this whole time. “My baby has found her mate!” Lee stepped aside letting his wife in. Sky was still sitting on her bed holding Caleb’s arm. “Caleb Mason, you are Sky’s mate?”            “Yes, I am,” he said proudly.            “That means she will be Luna of the Moon’s Warriors Pack? Oh, Goddess! My baby a Luna!” she chirped excitedly.            “Um, can we get up maybe? This is a bit awkward,” Sky sighed.            “Oh yes, of course. Lee, you go talk to Evan. I will give you two a minute and then we must talk. Caleb, I want to know all about you.”            Evan couldn’t fathom what he was hearing. How could his beloved Sky be mated to Caleb Mason? No. No, he would not let this happen. He would not allow Sky to leave with him. After all, she was a part of the Moon Storm Pack, and he would be the alpha of this pack soon enough. He would try to convince her to reject Caleb and choose him instead. Then if the time came, he would reject his mate and choose Sky.            “Evan, sit down, you are wearing a hole in my floor,” Lee said with sarcasm heavy in his tone.  Evan hadn’t realized he was pacing again. It was becoming a habit of his.            “Lee, Caleb cannot be her mate. He is no good for her.” Evan was desperate. Maybe Lee could help convince Sky to reject Caleb.            “Evan, I understand you have feelings for Sky. You want what is best for her. Trying to find a way to have her reject her mate, is only going to push her away. You cannot ask her to reject him. The Moon Goddess knows what she is doing.”            “I can’t accept him being her mate, he doesn’t deserve her.”              “Evan, be her friend. Protect her that way. If you try and come between Sky and Caleb, she will resent you. Believe in Sky and your friendship.”            The front door flew open revealing Daphne. “Hey, what did I miss? She asked, plopping down on the couch noticing the stares from Lee and Evan.            “I think we will let Sky tell you. For now, keep Evan company, he needs a friend.” With that Lee strode into the kitchen.            “Ok Evan, spill. What happened?”            Evan sighed. “I came over a little early. I thought I could hang out with Sky, and we could talk. I went upstairs like always to wake her up, and Caleb Mason was asleep in her bed!”            “So, if he was asleep in her bed, where was Sky?”            “Daphne, she was in the bed too! I damn near lost it! We both started snarling and then Lee showed up and kicked me out. Caleb stayed. Sky says he is her mate! That can’t be! I am supposed to be her mate!”            “Evan, Sky turned 18. If you were her mate, you would have known by now. That means you aren’t her mate. She starred at him for a moment as he began to realize what she meant. “I’m sorry Evan.” Daphne knew Evan had feelings for Sky but hadn’t realized just how deep those feelings were.            Evan stood still. “I did know. I figured it out yesterday but, I had hoped it would change, that maybe I missed it. I love her. I don’t know how to let her go.”            “Evan, she was never yours to lose,” Daphne said softly.            “Maybe she was never mine but, she shouldn’t have to deal with that ego-inflated jackass as her mate,” Evan’s eyes were beginning to glow, signaling his wolf Thaddeus, was close to the surface.            “Evan, you have never met Caleb. Just because Gideon and Dash acted like morons doesn’t mean that Caleb is like that too,” Daphne tried to reason with him. “Evan, you know as well as I do, the Moon Goddess does not make mistakes. If she put Sky and Caleb together, there is a reason.” Daphne hoped he would understand but, she knew Evan was not one to walk away from something he wanted and that something is Sky.            “Tell Sky I will call her later. For now, I have to leave before I do something I regret,” with that Evan stormed out slamming the door behind him.            Daphne sighed. He will be ok, I hope.
