Not good. This is not good. He found his mate. The timeline was now much shorter. The plan would have to happen much quicker than the original plan allowed. Damn it. It would not be good when she had to tell the boss. Nope, not good. They had planned in case this became necessary, after all the mate’s ball is tonight. The issue is once they mate and mark each other, things get a lot more difficult. They would be able to track each other through the mate link. Not to mention, the link was so powerful that without killing one it would be impossible to break.

He couldn’t shake the feeling something was off. He should be relaxed, happy, not feel worried and anxious. Sitting next to Sky should make him calm. Looking out the window towards his car, he thought he saw someone run from behind it. “Hey, I will be right back, I need to make a call.” He didn’t want to alarm anyone but, this was becoming more and more often than he felt as though someone or something was nearby. As he reached his car, he saw small footprints leading away. He knew they belonged to whoever he saw run from behind his car. He didn’t want to alarm anyone yet. He would speak to his father about this.
Sky was watching him from the window of the diner. She could see the worry spread across his handsome face. She didn’t want to believe the thoughts of doubt running through her mind. ‘Did he really have to make a call? Why didn’t he just call from inside? Maybe he was calling his girlfriend.’
“Sky,” Aria interrupted from the back of her mind. “Stop. He doesn’t have anyone. He doesn’t want anyone but us. Stop thinking you are not enough.”
“But are you sure?” She asked silently.
“YES! He is our mate! He loves us! Stop doubting yourself.”
As Caleb took his seat next to her, he gently squeezed her hand. “Are you ok, Baby Girl? You look upset.” He genuinely looked concerned.
“Yes, I was thinking about the mate’s ball,” she lied. “I am not a great dancer.”
He flashed a brilliant smile at her. “You will be great. Besides, if anybody is watching you, I will rip them apart.” He chuckled a bit. “I am kidding. Sort of.”
When they had all finished, they headed back to Sky’s house. When they pulled in the drive, Daphne, Gideon following like a lost puppy, headed to her house down a couple of houses from Sky’s. Dash took off in wolf form leaving Sky and Caleb alone. As she unlocked the door, a text came in from her mother. ‘We had to go help set up for tonight. See you there!’
All the pack members helped set up for the ball. The young wolves attending did not because it was supposed to be a surprise to see the decorated ballroom when they walked in. The adults claimed it was part of the magic.
As she opened the door, she felt the sparks as Caleb gently placed his hand on the small of her back. She smiled knowing he was with her. “Are you thirsty?” she asked, unsure what to do. She had always been a bit awkward. She thought she would have grown out of it by now. At least she had hoped so.
“Baby Girl, sit with me, we can finally talk some more.” As she neared the couch, he grabbed her hand pulling her onto his lap. “Much better,” he said burying his face in the crook of her neck. His hot breath was sending shivers down her spine. “You smell so good,” his husky voice said as it began doing things to her. She sat up looking into his eyes. His hand snaked up, pulling her lips to meet his. His kiss was gentle at first, slowly, they got rougher as an insatiable hunger took over. His tongue once again begged for entrance. As she parted her lips, she felt his tongue slip past. She could feel the dampness forming in her core.
Suddenly, she was thrown to the floor as a ferocious growl filled the room. Her eyes went wide as Evan stood with his hands holding Caleb by the throat. “Evan stop! Let go!” she screamed at him. Without warning, Caleb threw Evan across the room as his fangs began to elongate. “Stop! Caleb don’t hurt him! Evan, leave!” Sky stepped between them. “Both of you stop!” Neither moved, afraid to hurt her.
“Evan, what is wrong with you!” Sky shouted angrily. “He is my mate. You will have to accept that! You promised you would not interfere if you were not my mate! If you can’t do that, then we can’t be friends!”
“Sky, I,” Evan tried.
“Don’t. Just go,” Sky said tears streaming down her face.
“I really thought,” he tried again.
“No, you didn’t think. Get out. I will talk to you when you have cooled off.” Her eyes were now the color of the sky during a storm. He knew better than to argue when they looked like that.
He stood up, shooting Caleb one last look, he walked out slamming the door behind him.
She rushed over to Caleb. “Are you ok?” She asked looking him over as if he was hurt. “I am so sorry, I don’t.”
“Stop,” he said. “You have nothing to apologize for,” he gently reached out, softly touching her cheek. “Are you hurt?” he asked, genuine concern evident in his features.
“I’m fine. I can’t believe Evan would do that. How could he be so jealous? It’s not like I was his girlfriend. We never dated. We were always friends.”
“I think he thought you and him would be more,” Caleb said, a hint of jealousy staining his words.
“I never thought of Evan as more than a friend. I always thought it would be cool if he was my mate but deep down, I knew he wasn’t. I hoped I had imagined his feelings for me, but I guess not.”
“I think once he finds his mate, he will be ok,” Caleb was not used to comforting someone. “I mean, you can’t blame him. You are sweet, sexy, and perfect. How could he not develop feelings for you?”
Sky giggled. “I am not perfect. I have many flaws.”
He simply smiled at her. “If you could see yourself through my eyes, you wouldn’t think so.”
How had Caleb and now Gideon both found their mates? He’s the oldest so why had he not found his mate yet?
Weaving through the trees, he was trying to outrun the betrayal he felt the fates had dealt him. He deserved his mate. He should be holding her in his arms right now. Of course, he was happy for Caleb and Gideon, but he felt abandoned. Nobody knew he wanted his mate, his child, his family. Sure, he enjoyed his freedom. He enjoyed the random one-night stands that meant nothing to him. He knew once he had his mate, it would all change. He wanted it to. He would welcome it. He turned around to head back to the Moon Storm pack. The mate’s ball is tonight. Maybe he would finally have his mate.
