Chapter 11

Caleb and Cherub both looked at each other, shock on both their faces. Alpha Dean wrapped Sky in a bear hug. Still smiling, he released her before he straightened his clothes, his face losing all the softness it portrayed a minute ago. “Son.” He said as he looked at Caleb. “Father,” was his cool reply. “I am going to show Sky where we will be living.” He picked up the bags, hurrying past his parents. His mother looked as though she may cry, his father did not have a trace of emotion on his face. Sky followed him feeling a bit awkward. As they reached the top of the stairs, he finally spoke, “I’m sorry, Baby Girl. My father and I don’t see eye to eye. He has always been so strict. Growing up, he valued good grades and training victories over family time. He was never one to show affection.” His eyes darkened as he spoke. She could see the sadness in his eyes. She couldn’t imagine if her father had been that way. “I think he probably meant well,” she didn’t know what she should say. “I could tell,” she said as he opened the door. She took a few steps inside. The foyer was Magnificent. The floors were polished black marble with veins of silver running through it. The walls were a rich green color. A rail separated the top and bottom. The bottom was a dark wood. The vaulted ceiling gave the room an even bigger feel. Framed paintings lined the wall giving a feeling of being in a museum. The place was like a castle in a fairy tale. “Caleb, this place is amazing,” she said breathlessly. “Sky, one day you will reign over it with me, side by side,” the way he looked at her gave her goosebumps. As they reached the top of the grand staircase, there were three hallways that spread out in different directions. The one to the right was lined with burning candles. The scent of strawberries welcomed her as he led her down the hallway. The scent of Caleb greeted her as she entered their wing. The cathedral ceilings made the space seem bigger than it already was. The living room was off to the left. Hardwood floors spread through the entranceway and into the living room. A magnificent spiral staircase went up to a loft-style bedroom. Looking around, she marveled at the huge stone fireplace complete with a huge mantel. The kitchen was to the right. The island separated the kitchen from the entranceway. Four bar stools were pushed under the overhang of the island’s marble top. White marble with black veins flowing through was gleaming in the light. The stainless-steel appliances gave the kitchen a professional feel. The hall stretched further down in front of her. “What’s down there?” she asked her curiosity getting the best of her. “a Bathroom, and…” he trailed off. “And what?” she asked raising an eyebrow. “And rooms for our pups,” blush rose in his cheeks. She giggled smiling up at him. “You know what?” he asked a sly grin spreading across his face. “We could go practice making pups.” She laughed as he grabbed her hand pulling her to him. He scooped her up carrying her up the stairs and into their bedroom. The room was enormous. The king-size bed looked small in the huge space. It had a black comforter and tons of pillows. There was a set of sliding glass doors that opened to a balcony overlooking the surrounding mountains. A massive stone fireplace was along one wall, and three doors were along with another. Let me show you this, Caleb opened a door allowing bright light to stream out. “It’s our private bathroom,” he smiled. She stepped inside marveling at the sparkling white room. It had him and hers sinks, the biggest soaker tub she had ever seen, and a two-person shower that had benches inside. The shower was the focal point of the room. It had tiled walls that gave the illusion of a riverbed. The floor contained tiles that gave a sense of standing in a creek. She was stunned at the utter beauty of it. “Do you like it?” he asked sounding hopeful. “I love it. I have never seen anything like it.” She watched a smile creep up his face. “I am glad,” he whispered. She stepped out looking at the other two doors. “What’s in there?” she asked curiously. Those are both walk-in closets. “Caleb, this is amazing,” she said smiling. He didn’t answer, closing the distance between them, he pulled her into him kissing her gently. They had spent hours “practicing” before falling asleep. The sound of his stomach growling woke him. They hadn’t eaten since leaving her packhouse. Glancing at the clock, it was 2 am. Unwrapping himself from Sky, he stood up throwing on a pair of boxers. He stumbled to the door tripping over a discarded suitcase. He grumbled as he turned on the light outside their door. Making his way to the kitchen, his stomach reminding him why he was up. He poured himself a bowl of cereal. He shoveled it down before pouring himself another bowl. He had just put the last spoonful in his mouth when a blood-curdling scream nearly knocked him off his stool. “SKY!” he yelled as he flew down the hall towards their room. He slammed the door open to find Sky sitting up in bed staring at a now broken window. “Baby Girl! Are you ok?” his panic caused his voice to shake a bit. “There was a noise,” she stuttered. “It was a tapping on the window. It woke me up.” Her hands were shaking despite his firm grasp. I looked outside to see what it was. I was about to get up when a figure punched the glass. It shattered everywhere.” Thor was growling trying to get out, “Let me out, I will kill it” He screamed. “It would have hurt her! It would have hurt our mate!” Before he could think, he jumped up running towards the broken window. Shifting as he jumped through the hole. He sniffed the air. Letting out a loud howl, he alerted the pack to danger. He took off after the scent. Sky sat there alone looking at the broken window through which her mate disappeared. She felt like a coward for not following him. “Sky?’ “Sky are you in here?” Cherub’s voice broke through the eerie silence. “I’m here,” she called out into the darkness. She grabbed Caleb’s shirt which had been hastily discarded over the bedpost and threw it on. She didn’t want her to see her nude in her sons’ bed.            She heard Cherub’s footsteps as she reached the door. “Are you ok?” She sounded out of breath.            “Yes, something broke the window. Caleb shifted and went after it.”            “Rogues. We aren’t sure what they are after but, there isn’t a lot of them this time.” Cherub put an arm around Sky trying to calm her. “Caleb will be ok. He is a very skilled warrior.” She tried to soothe Sky who was still trembling.            A little while later, Caleb returned to find his mother comforting his mate who was much calmer now. “Are you hurt?” He asked as he scanned her for any sign of injury. “I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have left you alone to go after them.” He sat down on the bed taking her hand in his. He was dirty and had dried blood on his naked torso. “Caleb, stop.” She said a little more firmly than she meant. “I am fine. I am glad you went after them. I can take care of myself,” she sounded a lot more confident than she felt but she wasn’t a pup who needed protecting and coddling. She was a grown, marked wolf who would be Luna soon. He looked hurt. “I’m sorry,” she said looking down at her hands. “I was scared but, I know you have to protect the pack too. I don’t want you to think you have to stay with me when the pack could be in danger too.” She felt a tear roll down her cheek. She wiped it away so he wouldn’t see it. “I am going to let you two talk,” Cherub said walking towards the door. Sky lay back on her pillows feeling like she had not only scared him but hurt him as well. She buried her face in her hands and sobbed lightly. “Nobody will ever hurt you, Baby Girl. I will always protect you.” He lay down next to her and wrapped himself around her. “I will always keep you safe. I promise.” She fell asleep wrapped in his warm embrace.
