The next day at school, Evan couldn’t contain his anticipation as he arrived early, his sneakers squeaking lightly against the polished concrete. His backpack swung loosely over one shoulder as he scanned the entrance, noticing that Bethany hadn’t made it yet. He grinned, feeling a mix of excitement and nerves. Today, he had a plan brewing in his mind—something playful, something to surprise her—and he couldn’t wait to see her reaction.
He leaned casually against a pillar, pretending to check his phone, when he suddenly caught sight of her from across the lot. Bethany moved with her usual casual grace, her backpack slung over one shoulder, her hair bouncing lightly as she walked. Her attention was absorbed in the chatter around her, completely unaware of the lurking presence of Evan.
Evan crouched slightly, a mischievous grin spreading across his face. “Perfect,” he whispered under his breath. “This is going to be epic.” He crept silently behind a nearby pillar, waiting for the perfect moment to startle her.
“Hello, Martins!” he called out in a low, playful whisper as he tiptoed closer.
Bethany let out a squeal, spinning around so quickly that her ponytail swung like a pendulum. “Evan! You scared me half to death!” Her sneakers squeaked on the concrete, and a few students nearby glanced over curiously.
Evan burst into laughter, clutching his stomach. “I’m so sorry! I couldn’t resist!”
Bethany playfully slapped his shoulder, her mock glare softening into a grin. “For scaring me like that! You’re lucky I didn’t trip over my own feet.”
He raised his hands in mock surrender. “Noted, noted. I’ll behave… maybe.”
With banter flying between them like a rapid game of ping-pong, they strolled toward their classroom, their laughter blending seamlessly with the early morning hum of students and the distant squeak of locker doors. Once inside, they settled into their usual seats, animatedly recounting the events of the previous night—the basketball court, the burgers, and the easygoing walk home. Their conversation was filled with playful jabs, shared glances, and laughter that seemed to reverberate even above the murmur of the classroom.
Ava, walking in a few moments later, spotted the duo completely absorbed in each other, grinning like Cheshire cats. Her eyes sparkled with curiosity as she observed the dynamic unfolding before her. She knew they weren’t officially dating yet, but the casual, electric camaraderie was impossible to ignore.
Dropping her bag with a flourish, Ava sauntered over to them, her steps purposeful and confident. “Hey, Av!” Bethany exclaimed as soon as she noticed her.
“Uhmm, can I borrow Bethany for a sec?” Ava asked, a sly sparkle in her eyes as she glanced at Evan.
Evan smirked, leaning back in his chair. “Sure thing. But don’t take her too long, okay?”
Ava tugged Bethany playfully out of the classroom, the hallway ringing with their laughter.
“Okay, spill! How did it go with Evan?” Ava demanded, eyes wide with curiosity, practically bouncing with excitement.
Bethany rolled her eyes, a teasing smile tugging at her lips. “Honestly, not much happened! I met him at the city basketball court where he was practicing.”
Ava’s expression fell, mock disappointment taking over her features. “And that was it? No sparks? No dramatic confessions?”
Bethany shrugged, a mischievous glint in her eyes. “We grabbed burgers and he walked me home. Nothing fancy.”
“Beth! That’s so basic! He did all that before he even told you anything serious? Come on!” Ava groaned, throwing her hands into the air as if the injustice of it all were unbearable.
Bethany laughed, shaking her head. “I know, I know! I’m trying not to overthink it. Let’s just head back in before we get caught.”
Ava’s eyes lit up with another idea. “Wait! Do you have plans for Saturday?”
“Plans? No! Why?” Bethany replied, raising an eyebrow.
“Dummy! Saturday is your birthday, remember?” Ava exclaimed dramatically, throwing herself onto a nearby bench as if the weight of the revelation were crushing.
Bethany’s eyes widened, and she groaned, half-amused. “Oh, right! I totally forgot. I was just planning on spending the day with Dad. Maybe I’ll swing by your place later though.”
“I’ll definitely tell my mom! We can plan something epic,” Ava said, bouncing with enthusiasm.
Meanwhile, just as the girls were plotting, a guy burst into the classroom calling Evan to meet with the coach. Evan stood, exchanging a brief nod with his teacher before dashing out. As he left, he caught snippets of Ava and Bethany’s conversation about Bethany’s birthday. He smiled to himself, a spark of determination igniting in his chest. He had a plan forming—something special for Bethany—but he’d need to think carefully about how to make it happen.
Ava and Bethany returned to their seats, still giggling at the possibilities of the day ahead. Evan returned just in time, slipping quietly into his chair as the classroom buzzed with activity. The hours flew by, the lessons fading into the background as he kept sneaking glances at Bethany, his mind racing with ideas for her birthday.
Finally, the bell rang, releasing a wave of students into the hallways. Evan sprang to his feet, grabbing his bag. “I’m off to basketball practice!” he called out to Bethany.
“Wait! Want to grab lunch first?” she asked, a note of concern in her voice.
He shook his head, flashing a grin. “I packed my lunch. I’ll catch you after break!” And with that, he dashed off, sneakers squeaking against the polished floor.
Ava leaned toward Bethany, smirking. “Come on, let’s go grab lunch. I’m starving!”
Together, they made their way to the cafeteria, the chatter around them mixing with the sound of clattering trays and the hum of conversation. They slid into a table near the window, sunlight streaming across their faces as they began to plan.
“So, what should we do when you come over?” Ava asked, eyes sparkling with misobedient ideas.
Bethany tilted her head thoughtfully. “Hmmm, maybe a movie night? Or we could binge-watch all the episodes of ‘En O’clock’ that we’ve missed?”
“Oh! Or we could go to a ‘Sip N Paint’!” Ava suggested, eyes wide with enthusiasm.
Bethany laughed, nearly spitting out her juice. “‘Sip N Paint’? Are you kidding? You can’t even draw a stick figure!”
“Who said I’d paint? You do the painting, I’ll handle the sipping,” Ava countered with a mischievous grin.
Bethany shook her head, giggling. “Just as long as it’s non-alcoholic! You know I’m not eighteen yet.”
“No worries, ‘Miss Goodie Two Shoes!’” Ava teased, taking a sip from her smoothie. “Totally non-alcoholic!”
As the lunch progressed, they brainstormed ideas, their laughter rising above the cafeteria’s background noise. Ava leaned closer, eyes gleaming. “Okay, tell me! What do you want for your birthday? Three options. I’ll pick one.”
Bethany thought for a moment, excitement sparking. “I’d love an ENHYPEN album! Or maybe a signature from one of the members?”
Ava's eyes widened in mock horror. "A signature? Seriously? Are you planning to rob a bank or something? How am I supposed to afford that?"
She burst into laughter, teasingly adding, "I swear, if I could, I'd punch you right now! Are you trying to turn me into a criminal? How in the world do you expect me to scrape together cash for an album or an autograph? And just so you know, it's called an autograph, you silly goose!"
Bethany laughed, shrugging. “Hey, I’m just telling you what I want. Up to you now.”
Ava shook her head, grinning. “I might regret asking, honestly! But this is way more entertaining than I expected.” They both burst into laughter again, the sound echoing lightly across the cafeteria.
Eventually, the bell rang, signaling the end of break. Reluctantly, they packed up, still buzzing with excitement. The hours passed quickly, with teachers’ voices blending into a soft hum as they eagerly anticipated the end of the day.
As the final bell rang, releasing the students into the sun-drenched afternoon, Evan walked home, mind racing with thoughts of Bethany’s birthday. He wanted to do something extraordinary—something that would make her day unforgettable. The idea of collaborating with Ava popped into his head for a brief moment, but he quickly dismissed it. He wanted it to be special, personal, and from him.
Determination gleamed in his eyes as he picked up his pace, already planning ways to make her birthday one to remember. The challenge was on, and Evan was more than ready.
