The night before had been soft. Not loud, not chaotic, just quiet in a way that made everything feel safe again. Bethany lay on her bed, phone pressed to her ear, her voice softer than usual as she spoke to Evan. “I’m serious,” Evan said from the other end, his tone light but warm. “Sleep early. I’m not waiting for you if you oversleep.” Bethany rolled onto her stomach, smiling into her pillow. “I won’t oversleep.” “You always say that.” “Okay, rude.” He chuckled. “I’m picking you up early. Like… really early. We’ll watch the sunrise at the beach.” Her heart skipped. “The sunrise?” she whispered. “Yeah,” he said simply. “Just us.” Just us. That alone made her smile widen. “Okay,” she said, softer this time. “I’ll be ready.” There was a short silence comfortable, not awkward.
