The third day felt heavier than the first. Bethany lay on her bed staring at the ceiling, her phone resting on her stomach. The room was quiet except for the soft hum of the ceiling fan above her. Three days. Three full days since Evan left for the hospital. Three days since the quiet car ride back from the vacation house. Three days since she had sent him a text saying “I’m glad your mom is awake. Please take care of yourself too.” He hadn’t replied. Bethany turned her head and looked at her phone again as if it might suddenly light up. Nothing. Her mind kept trying to excuse it. He’s just stressed. His mom is in the hospital. He probably hasn’t even looked at his phone. Still… a small part of her felt that sting of being pushed away. She sat up slowly and grabbed the phone.
